Just bought an A3!

One thing I noticed yesterday was the temp needle didn't sit at 90...is this right as is there an easy way to check if it's a stat or sensor issue?

will you blacking windows?
I just bought some window blinds for the rear. If they don't look good or work the way I hope the rear windows will be getting tinted.

So I bought and fitted the window blinds and my wife does not like them at all! Shame as I think they look great, can't be scratched by the kids and stay in place when the windows are down. They are for sale in the parts section now...

If the temp needle doesn't sit in the middle is there a way to check running temp through the dash menu?

Had the coolant sensor changed yesterday and the temp needle still does not sit in the middle so guessing it must be the thermostat. Also had the rear wiper motor replaced yesterday so that's working now.

Actually just noticed that the temp needle does not sit in the middle of mine too. Pretty sure it used to! Following the thread now...

I know it sounds a bit daft but how long of a journey are you reguarly doing? I thought my car had this problem but it seams that it takes a good 15 minutes for it to get to 90 but then it does stay there. Mr previous a3 used to get to 90 in about 5 minutes

Not a daft question at all. The car is used for occasional supermarket trips (10 minutes) and rare trips on the M1. Hence I didn't pay much attention to the temp needle. But made a recent trip that was 25 minutes long and the needle almost reached middle but not quite!

Might be worth just keeping an eye on it when you make a long journey then.
The car I had before was a 57 reg 3dr pre facelift 170 tdi s line and that took about 5 minutes or so to get to the middle temp(90) and I had that for nearly 6 year and was always the same.
This newer one is a 10 reg 5dr facelift 170 tdi s line quattro so is a bit different to the other I had and as I say this easily takes a good 15 minutes or so before it gets to 90 so I assumed that something were wrong but now I've had it a few months I've realised it must just be this car as it does get to 90 and it stays there once it's there.

Regularly driven for over an hour at a time and never gets near 90!

It's about halfway up most of the time

so around 75ish? normal op temp is 80-90 degrees, so nothing to worry. In case if you want to be extra secure do the pressure/vacuum test to check if it's sealed.

I asked my wife to take this after we had been driving for about an hour yesterday. I'm sure it's not the end of the world but it's a niggle that will bother me until it gets fixed!

Which sensor did you have changed then? The coolant sensor in the bottle or the one down the side of the engine?
And what is that light for on the dash?

My mechanic whom I bought the car from changed the one on the side of the engine and it made no difference. I'm thinking it's the thermostat but it's frustrating having to swap parts without knowing what the problem actually is. The dash light is for brake pads...another niggle as all the pads and sensors are fine!

cehck the wiring near wheel if not deteriorated, usually there's a problem with pads sensor., oh it's seem to be like 60ish, check the levels of coolant on vcds it's will tell you the temp they reading. so if you got like 60 and 90 you will know witch one is bad, if both reading same temp then it's thermostat.

On mine this was caused by the MAF. I can't particularly explain why since the sensor still looked brand new in comparison. The car took forever to warm up before.

Maf? Is weird, but also if it isn't directly related in some way always can be, however it will basically always look new unless you re not using any air filter, just electronics screw up.

I'll need to get hold of VCDS from somewhere soon. If that doesn't work I'll look in to the MAF

Another weekend and a few more niggles! Noticed that the although the rear wiper is now working the rear wash is not! To add to that the windscreen washer fluid smells like rotten eggs! I drained it all out using the washers and refilled with neat washer fluid so hopefully a few times cycling through it will get rid of the horrific smell!

Also got this far in fixing the armrest latch. After getting very frustrated with it I realised I need the pegs on the side to hold it open so will pick it up when the ones I've ordered turn up.

Had a fiddle with the rear wash wipe mechanism yesterday...poked a pin through the holes to see if it was blocked and no luck. Any other suggestions? I can hear the pump working but no fluid. Also as I have Xenon headlamps I assumed I'd have headlight washers but they dont seem to work either! I tried pulling the stalk five times and everything else I read up but no joy.

I have the feeling that these 2004-2006 vehicles are horrible when it comes to these minor issues. I have a lot of those as well including rear wiper, washers, hand rest cover, etc.

I also get light sensor defective warning at times when it works and so on. Don't get me wrong, I love my car but Audi really made a mess with these earlier 8P models.

1) Sounds like a thermostat issue - typically they stick open and run too cold.
2) I can see from your pictures that your rear wiper is parking incorrectly towards the nearside. The rear wiper motors across the whole VAG range are a design fault. The water feeds through the central shaft and eventually leaks into the motor causing erratic behaviour - stop/start/parking in the wrong place/ water dripping into boot and non-working washer jet. Mine failed after just 4-years. Two screws on rear hatch handle and the trim just pulls out as it is held in by metal prongs. Three (or two?) 10mm nuts, disconnect water pipe, electrical plug and a wiper arm puller to remove your wiper arm - job done.
3) As far as I am aware, normal 8P A3s only have one brake pad wear sensor which is integrated into a pad on the nearside front wheel. The connection is easy to break when changing the pads - you need to inspect the wiring if the pads are new.

Thats awesome thank you. I suspected thermostat on the first one so may as well get that done. My mechanic replaced the wiper motor so now the wiper moves but the wash dopes not. I'll remove the boot trim to investigate further. I'm probably going to change the pads for new to get rid of the issue....a pain but cant see the alternative right now!

It definitely looks like it's parking to the wrong side. Is it possible he used a 2nd hand motor which has now failed?

The pics were from before the change :)

Cheers...all I tried was the nozzle so I'll give that a try

Amazing. The armrest clip is fixed! It's one of those jobs that once you have done it it's so simple but when your doing it seems so difficult. Anyway all sorted now and one (small) thing crossed off the list.

Good luck with the sunroof blind, mine has been broken since I had mine, no one answered my post on fitting the new blind, I looked hard to see if its doable to no avail. Ive put it down to a last on the list of things to change or modify now.
Your rear wiper is shot put a new one in, here is a bosch one, NEW VW GOLF MK4 VW PASSAT ESTATE SKODA FABIA REAR WIPER MOTOR BOSCH 0390201592 | eBay
If you want any lamps and especially a decent mod on the xeons then speak to t8ups | Audi-Sport.net he is the man. Etched clear lenses. T8ups bi xenon clear lens mod | Audi-Sport.net
Yep another mod on the bucket list.

That's looks good.

I've had 2 arm rests break now except it was the little hook that snapped off, not the latch. The first one I followed the same instructions as you but screwed a small self-tapping screw in in place of the hook, managed to force the spring over it. The second arm rest Audi broke when they were giving the car a complementary clean - they replaced the whole lid thank god.

Thanks. The blind is something I will fix! I'm determined to find something to make it right again.

The rear wiper works since a new motor was fitted it's just the rear wash that does not work. Is the wash mechanism part of the motor?

I just went to fit the armrest and couldn't resist popping the rear wiper cover off to have a look. Blocked solid....I think I'll just replace that part!

Given the state of it I'll just get a new one. It looks wrecked! I just hope the headlight washer mechanism is not in the same state.
