Just seen this on BBC News:

Chorlton-cum-Hardy man killed during car theft
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-39684850

'A man has been killed by thieves who stole his car from outside his house. It happened in the early hours after Michael Samwell and his wife were woken by a noise and he went to investigate, Greater Manchester Police said.

Shortly after this, shouting was heard outside the property, in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, and he was found injured. He died in hospital a short time later.

Police think the 35-year-old sustained his injuries being run over by his car, a black Audi S3, which was taken.

They have launched a murder inquiry.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the theft and killing, which happened on Cranbourne Road at about 03:00 BST.

Det Supt Jon Chadwick said: "My thoughts go out to the Michael's wife and his family. I cannot comprehend what they must be going through.

"This is the murder of an innocent man who has merely sought to protect his property from criminals.
"If you know who has done this you must inform the police of what you know.
"We will not stop until we have found the person responsible for this dreadful crime."

Police are keen to speak to anyone who was in Cranbourne Road at the time of the killing, or who saw Mr Samwell's car being driven away afterwards.

The Audi was found abandoned a short time later on Whitby Avenue, Ladybarn with extensive damage.'

Stay safe everyone,

"They have launched a murder enquiry"

Sad news, but I'm pretty sure you can't be done for murder when you've carried out a hit and run. Murder usually involves intent, premeditation or planning...

Correct, it would be "Death by Dangerous Driving". in the UK I'm sure it's a minimum 24 month disqualification and between 1-15 years imprisonment depending on how the judge saw the severity. Poor bloke was just defending what was rightfully his by the sounds of things as well.

This was in The sun this morning, tragic :(

in a sense it goes to show what some people say on here about saying not to try and prevent them, if they want the car let them have it, never know what could happen if you try and stop it. That said heat of the moment decisions cant be helped. feel terrible for the family, hope the thieves are caught and dealt with appropriately :(

This is already being discussed in the thread "Sad News". Lets try and keep it all in one thread.

Not strictly true. Firstly the Police will start high to ensure best evidence is gathered, investigation/charging standards are met etc.
Secondly, the premeditation can be immediately prior to the act - i.e. As this poor fella challenged the thieves, the driver of his car decided there and then that he was willing to kill to get the car and get away.
The cop who was killed in Liverpool by the stolen L200 was by all accounts deliberately run down, sadly the court/jury decided it was manslaughter not murder. Almost impossible these days to prove the "Mens Rhea" aspect of a crime.

The defence is so simple though, isn't it. "Yeah, we stole the car, but as we were driving it away the owner jumped out in front of us. There was nothing we could do to avoid him, honest..."

No court in the civilised world would judge that as murder.
