I have the 3 years Audi connect pack in my car which has an eSIM but also an extra SIM slot for a data SIM I guess to make the car have in-car wifi hotspot. Just wondering if anyone has done this and whether they thing its worth the cost? The alternative I guess is just to tether my kids iPads to my iPhone instead, so is there any benefit to having the SIM in the car?

Most of this seems subjective based on your requirements (tethering allowance vs. Cost for additional data SIM). But what I can add, is the eSIM gives your car 'unlimited' data for itself. However if you use your own SIM, the car will use that for all the Audi Connect services also, so worth bearing that into your calculations.

I have a 3 12gb prepaid sim that i use in my current car, i plan to stick that in the new one as i dont belive the Audi one permits wifi for passengers!?

@Keef - yes sorry I was not clear enough that the unlimited data only applies to the Cars data, not the Wi-Fi hotspot. You can purchase a data plan from Audi's network provider for the hotspot, but your Three SIM will be much better value!

Thanks @maui
im sure the Audi data plan would cost and arm and a leg!

The ideal scenario would be if I could share the 8gb a month I have with my iPhone
But we all know how Apple feel about that

Unfortunately cannot blame Apple for that one! It's actually the greed of Mobile Providers - they have the power to enable / disable tethering, and in fact forced Apple/Android to tag any hotspot data so they can identify / charge for it (whereas before they would need to do packet inspection / sniffing to figure it out!)

Most new plans have tethering inclusive of your GB now. I have a 15GB plan that I can use how I like.

What is a shame however, is that Audi disabled the ability to connect the car to another wifi hotspot in MY17 onwards but you can enable it with coding.

So I get 12gb with my iPhone that I can tether, so maybe not worth bothering then with an extra SIM

I have not been able to code the wifi hotspot - I have the option now but it is greyed out.

I did try a SIM to allow the hotspot but only seemed to get 3G and not 4G - anyone else managed to get 4G?

What network? As UK operators have different 4G bands

3 just to see if it worked on a journey - ended up putting back in my mifi dongle.

I've used the sim from my 3 MiFi dongle in the Audi and routinely get LTE 90% of the time all over the UK. Maybe tell 3 your sim is duff and Request a new one

Same here. Coded in the hotspot but it's just greyed out. Suspect there is something else that needs changing but haven't had the time to properly look.

Might try again, nothing wrong with the SIM as I get 4G all the time in the dongle.
