For those with folding mirrors?

When do you use them?

Have you got them set to fold in every time you lock the car?

Just curious, as a few people I know have them but only use them on certain occasions.

Yeah fold on lock. I can't see any disadvantages for this to be honest. Maybe some people don't like it.

I only got them to fold manually to go in and out the garage but set to do it when car locks also a good visual aid to make sure it's locked

Yep, same, also like the way the mirrors open out when the key is put in the ignition and the front screen also rises, then my sequence is press the start/stop button, and then lower the front screen.

lol good to see I'm not the only one! I do it as others have said, easy way to see it's locked.

I've just seen a facelift S3 with the mirrors folded in, he had a black square on the inside edge of the silver bit, so when the mirrors are folder out it would be facing the side window....any ideas what that is???

Ha nice solid results on the poll :D

That is side assist, it lights up orange when a car is approaching beside you.

Sorry to hijack but didn't want to start a new thread for a pointless question, did anyone on here get their folding mirrors retrofitted or know a rough price on doing this? I'm jealous I don't have this! Pfl s line if that helps.. thanks in advance

Fold when I lock. This wasn't set up in the MMI when I first got the car which I thought was strange as I would have thought everyone does this :)

There is a thread here when some users including myself did a retrofit. Parts cost about £350 from Audi (with discounts) and the guide is simple to do. Just set yourself most of the day to do it slowly.

Great thanks il have a search

Fold on lock... don't see why you wouldn't. As others have said, it's a nice indication that you've locked the car too when they start to fold in.

The person I got my parts from doesn't have access to this forum I think or can't respond to new PMs (long story) but if you want I can provide his details and you can contact him for a quote.
I think i have someone who can get me the parts but if there's a problem il give you a message, thanks mate

When I first got the car I had them set to fold on lock but now have it changed.

Like earlier posts I thought it was useful to know if I'd locked it, but then when you unlock they don't fold out anyway so if you've returned to the car but not started the ignition then the car could still be open with the mirrors folded.

Secondly, the paranoia in me thought that the amount of times per day I lock and unlock the car, I didn't want to cause any unnecessary wear to the motors. I know they're almost certainly capable of it, but I'm an absolute fruitcake so if I can avoid the worry then I'd rather just leave it! If I need them folded I'll just do it using the switch in the car from now on.

Audi A1/S1's don't have their mirrors fold on lock by default, same with Q3's, but it can be set via VCDS and is a very popular mod. I had three S1's come to me (all friends) and two of them wanted folding on lock but one did not. When I asked why he said "I like to fold my mirrors when I want, and leaving them out acts as a guide for other drivers not to hit his car". I guess leaving them open means there is more chance of the mirror only being damaged and not the vehicles bodywork etc... makes sense I think.

I myself always have them fold on lock as Heated Auto Dimming Mirror Glass is £260 a side to replace :(

My left hand /passengers mirror freezes every morning in the cold weather even the drivers side has begun to do so.....l need to get out and push it fully back into the lock position then turn the ignition back on for them to fold down..... Pain in the buttocks but still wouldn't do without them,my second fave option after the pano-roof

I retrofitted mine myself. To fold mine I use the long press on the lock tab on the remote. You can choose then!

Haha not far off! I'm the guy that if there is a chance something goes wrong, it does!

Just over 2 weeks in and I have 1,200 miles though so I'm not nursing her TOO much :D

I think new/2017 a1 & s1's now have mirrors fold on lock by default (ours has and some others have also reported this) - even though brochure said otherwise - I think older a1 & s1's as you say don't though
