Hi,

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so what the problem might be? Sometimes after I start my 2001 S3 AMK after it has been lying for a few days, the brakes don't work straight away...it takes 20 secs or so for the pressure to build up and they work fine then. When driving, I've never had any problems, it just seems to happen sometimes (but not always) on start up. Any ideas would be great.

thanks,

Eoin

I would replace the brake/clutch fluid, as it absorbs water naturally, it's recommended to replace it every two years anyway.

Still having this problem, just wondering if the valve in the attached is correctly fitted, the arrows are pointing from the servo to the engine direction, is this correct? I would have thought the vacuum direction is the other way. Thanks

Thats not the servo pipe or check valve... thats the EVAP... servo check valve on an S3 is behind the heatshield where the servo is... vac pipe for the servo comes from the outlet at the end of the inlet manifold (opposite side to throttle body)

Define 'don't work'? if there is no vacuum to create servo assistance then the pedal will be rock hard and you have no travel in the pedal... if you have a long pedal or not much bite then thats something else...

thanks Tuffty. Pedal seems fine, normal, definitely not rock hard. When I start the car after it has been lying for a few days, the brakes don't work for maybe 20 secs. Brakes work fine otherwise.....any ideas?

Depends won't you mean by 'don't work'... long pedal? no bite?

What pads do you have? when was the last time the fluid was changed? are the discs warped? (can cause pad knock off needing a couple of pumps to get a decent pedal)... first start at cold is a fast idle so less vacuum... can take a while to get a usable pedal... sporty pads can need a little heat to get bite... could be a split in the plastic pipe leading to the servo check valve... there is a joiner where the servo vac pipe does a 90 right at the scuttle... this sometimes pushes apart..

pedal is hard but no bite on startup. fluid changed recently, pads DS2500, recently changed too but problem was there with old pads and fluid. Discs are newish (<1000miles), so should be ok. could be just needs a bit of vacuum to build up after starting. I'll have a good look at the servo vac pipes when I get a minute. Thanks again! Eoin

yeah, I don't think it's that, because even if I don't move, I do get a bite after 20 or 30 secs.....had the problem before I fitted the DS2500's too....not to worry, I'll have a look around the vac pipes to begin with.
