Had a quick search on here for some answers but seem to be coming up with conflicting opinions...

I purchased a 1.8 tqs yesterday. The turbo has a lot of play I the shaft. I don't fancy driving it much as it is as I'm worried it will fail and cause more damage.

I'm not planning on tuning the car really.. maybe a few mods.

What i want to know is what turbo can I go For? Should I upgrade to something else or stick with the stock k03. Also... has anyone had any experience with these eBay turbos? I can get a k04-15 from eBay for about 110 quid.. will it be pants?

Thanks in advance

ebay turbo will work fine, for about a thousand miles...

then it'll explode :p

K03-005 or K03-029 are both standard fitment turbos. K03-073 or K04-015 are both a mild upgrade.

Expect to pay 5-600 for a genuine new turbo, maybe more.

if you want to do it cheaply, buy a good used one or get yours rebuilt.

Thanks for the reply. So will the k03-029 be a like for like swap? There is a local used one from a vw specialist tubing company being sold that ill buy if it is a like for like. Are the turbine and compressor sizes similar? What's the most obvious route to go down for a bit more noise/power?

029 has a very slightly different (larger) turbine wheel but essentially the same and will act as a bolt in swap.

Ended up getting a cheapie Chinese k04-015 to tie me over. In the mean time ill look to build a hybrid with my k03 hot side and a k04 compressor assembly.

In terms of chips, where is the best place to get hold of one in the UK? I can solder myself so looking to buy a chip and diy fit as a cheap skate alternative.

Chipping is old technology... People don't chip anymore as the standard ECU's have enough memory to be able to store decent map.

You want a remap, not a chip...

Old ECU needs to be chipped as it doesn't use an EPROM. Can fit the ECU from an AGU Golf, as with +12v to pin 43 (iirc) this can then be flashed via the OBD port

Did you manage to ever get your mapped?
