Shocking....

Does raise the question of what would you do if you found someone in your house looking for your car keys

Shocking news but it seems to be happening more and more these days, in particular with the S3. Seems to be the car of choice for the low life.

I always used to take my car and house keys up to the bedroom at night. For some while now I have decided to just leave them in the normal place in the lounge. Hopefully a thief will find the keys and just take the car and not come up stairs. Much as I love my car it can easily be replaced. As far as I'm aware breaking in to a house and steeling the keys in not common where I live (Rural Cambridgeshire). I am a Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator and get details from the Police of break-ins at regular intervals and none have been connected to the theft of a car. Lets hope it stays that way.

Very sad, I hope they catch them and lock them away for a very long time.

Hit them with the heaviest object to hand. Probably until they've stopped moving.

It's a sad world now unfortunately where you have to worry about what car you own or what possessions you have in your house through fear of them being stolen/you injured in the process.

Really frustrates me that these people feel they can just waltz into your house and take what they want without a care in the world as to what damage they cause, how it makes you feel, or how hard you've worked to have them in the first place!

I kinda agree, but if people make it easy, they'll just keep doing it. I doubt this was the first time these guys have nicked a car and if they'd failed most times or they'd received a pasting, they might have decided against stealing this poor guy's car in the first place.

Sent my bro the link and he just said where he lives which is fairly quiet, there was a load of cars that had their tyres slashed and were broken into - including the A7 he currently has from Audi, thankfully he hasn't got his TTS at the mo and they left his Mrs A3!

I always used to put my cars in the garage(fortunate to be able to) but in more recent years and with having company/lease cars, I stopped bothering.

I collect my S3 tomorrow and one of the things I made a point of doing was clearing my garage so that I could use it.

Not to save the car, but now I have young children in the house, I'm trying to minimise the chance of someone breaking in for the keys!

I actually feel like leaving them at the bottom of the stairs!!

Shocking. Hearing this a lot lately with S3's in Manchester... not too far from where I'm originally from. It's best just to keep the keys away from your bedrooms to avoid anything like this happening. Better giving them the car :grumpy:

It could have been any one of us.

I hope his family manage to deal with as best they can in the awful circuimstances.

Stolen in Chorlton. Dumped in Ladybarn.
Burnage gang?

Omg, that is beyond sad. His poor family. No car is worth that.

See this is national news now on the BBC and ITV, so hopefully more chance of getting these idiots.

The car was a Navarra S3 Saloon, 66 plate.

Very sad news. As noted above, it is not worth it....if they get into your house then let the, have the keys.

Just hope his family pull through it all.

Only just caught up with this thread, and it is beyond sad, my heartfelt sympathies to his family

Plenty of security and if they do get in (CCTV,alarm and good quality door locks etc) the keys are in plain sight (for anyone interested they are on the small set of drawers next to the TV in the TV room!!!!!)

but some people really @Milnesafc
Hit them with the heaviest object to hand. Probably until they've stopped moving.
That's exactly what this poor guy tried to do...and he's dead!!!!!!!

Yeah, saw this at the weekend and is very sad. As said above, just let them take it, not worth loosing your life over - it can be replaced, but I agree with what Tom said, it just makes me angry that these low life's can just walk in and take what they want. Fortunately, my house is pretty secure, they're not getting in when it's all locked up (anti burst front door and windows see to that! - the Police hate them as they can't use the battering ram and you can't force the locks or hinges).

It's just madness really. If they did get in, I have a lovely air gun waiting for some point blank shots - anyone having done airsoft will know how much that hurts!

On the normally quiet island where I live, there has been a recent spike in car crime. Don't even need to read the local paper to know this, the number of joy-ridden, often burned-out wrecks adorning the roads and fields recently with 'Police Aware' signs on them beggars belief. Very sad to see.

Apparently, burglary of occupied households are very significantly lower in countries where home owners are allowed, and likely, to have a gun to defend the home. You'll still get robbed if you're away, or the house is empty, but crooks are far less likely to rob an occupied house and risk being offed.

Very sad indeed.. just 2 miles down the road from where i live here in Sale south Manchester.... and as its been said *** let them have the keys, cars can be replaced, lives CANNOT be replaced.

RIP

Unfortunately it seems that Manchester and Birmingham are the current hot spots for car crime. I remember when I had the ST, loads were stolen on an almost daily basis... 90% of the time, it was one of those cities.

According to the BBC website...

A man, 21, is being held on suspicion of murder and is due to be questioned, Greater Manchester Police said.

Det Supt Jon Chadwick said the force was continuing to appeal for witnesses following Mr Samwell's "senseless murder".

This is utterly heartbreaking. As people above have alluded to already a car is replaceable. If somebody confronts you or breaks into your house then let them have the keys and go. Even with huge gates and plenty of cameras I'm going to start leaving the car keys in a central place in the house rather than in the bedroom where the girlfriend and I sleep. It's not worth it!

Horrible news, I really feel for his family.

I read the Manchester Evening News story which shows a picture of the car, a 66 plate S3 saloon... only 6 months old!

Having experienced this exact type of crime its impossible to know what you'd do when it happens. In my case the burglars locked me into my own house with my keys, that was something that has always bugged me - When I tried to chase it was blocked... Having heard this story I'm glad it happened this way now.

I think and as others have said... if anything comes out of this - it should teach us all to just let them take the car.

They could claim murder. Providing they put the case forward as the thief running the owner down to stop him from intervening.

I checked my insurance last night, if I insured now it would be £5500, it's gone up £1000 in a couple of weeks.... I suspect this high profile case had an effect on it. My current premium is £2900, reduced to £2000 with multicar.

Tragic.
Not that it matters in the scheme of things, but I see the reports incorrectly saying it's black and a "sports coupe".
Thoughts with the family.
RIP Mike Samwell :pensive:
