Hi,

Has anybody actually used one on the S1.

I spoke to Audi and was told that the 18inch wheel will fit, but it has not been tested on the S1 so they can't recommend it (they can sell it to me). If I use it, it would be at my own risk.

The foam is ok but it's just Sod's law that something will happen when I'm on the way to the airport or somewhere else where I would be better carrying a spare, just in case.

Any thoughts?

Chris

Use it at your own risk? If it's a wheel it's a wheel as long as it's the correct offset and size then you shouldn't have any problems at all. Where are you going to keep it though? There's no space under the boot floor for one.

Thats what I thought, they just said that as it has not been tested on an s1 they were not allowed to recommend it as an option. I would only have it when I was going a long distance or to and airport etc when waiting for any kind of recovery may cause me an issue (if the foam didn't work).

I had a trip to France planned and wanted a spare and when I looked into it I decided not to bother. Audi do make a spare ( space saver ) for it and a cover as the wheel is suppose to sit on the rear seat, it won't fit in the boot. The guy in the parts department at Southend Audi was brilliant and couldn't have been more helpful although all other departments are worse than useless, it took him a while to get all the info on it and he got back to me with part numbers, costs etc. didn't go to France as the French port strikes started a few days before I was due to go so lucky I didn't shell out for spare.

I've still not decided, if I should get one or not. If you still have the correct part number, can you please let me have it? + how much did they say it was?

Cheers

Hi Chris, it was getting on for a year ago so my memory's a bit vague but I'm think you require an 18 wheel and it was around £240 and that's without the bag to put it in, it's strapped on the rear seat using the seat belt but I see a few on eBay for £100. Can't remember the part number but if you call the parts dept at Southend Audi I'm sure he will remember me coming in and he will get it for you, he's very helpful but again can't remember his name but there's only a couple of guys in there so should be ok. Good luck mate.

I got in touch with Southend and they contacted Audi. They came back with the same as my local dealer, that there is no recommended spare. They would not comment if an 18 space saver would fit or not.

Might have to find somebody with one and try it, if I decide I need one.

Cheers

Where are you planning on putting the spare wheel?

Just in the back. I would not have it with me all the time, just when waiting for recovery may cause me an issue (airport trips etc).

I've managed to get an 18" space saver off a late model A1 (it was written off after receiving frontal damage) and over the weekend tried it on my S1.

It fitted both front and rear.

My wife has made a cover for it out of black material similar to a car cover and it fits neatly behind the back passenger seat. You don't notice it because of the privacy glass.

Any chance of a part number? And out of interest what tyre do you have on it? Guessing something 'omnidirectional' ???

Thats great, just having a look on eBay now. It's only for long trips to Wales, I don't like not having a spare (but that is the only real 'down side' with the S1). Now to sort a bike rack!

don't forget if you do have to use it you have to put your BIG wheel back in the car some where and sods law it will be wet and muddy
I just had a puncture 375 mile on clock 2 week old 17 plate S1 competition we go to airport next week cant get a real tyre for 3 days now I am worried too lol and used my foam luckily it worked
