Audi Connect SIM card choices.

I have an iPhone and still need the SIM card in the glove box for data access.

BT SIM card arrived today for £5/mth with 500mb. Signal strength was excellent got 23Mbps on my drive. Went for this for the convenience of it not running out more than anything. Have a 20gb/mth allowance on my phone that I barely touch so can set that up as a mobile hotspot for passengers if needed.

Yeah that's a feature I did read about... Assume that's a connect thing only :/ What sort of extra MMI control will I get with the wifi connection?

Yeah Connect only for that I'm afraid.

With the music streaming, over Bluetooth all you get is the ability to skip forward or back a track. With the MMI Connect app via Wifi (on an iPhone at least), you get the full iPod-style control that you get by connecting it directly to the MMI, and can browse by artist, album, genre, playlist etc etc. Not sure about Android (if the MMI connect is even available for Android)

Thanks. So I'll get the iPod style function by using the MMI lead for my iPhone I've ordered I assume? Save doing it wireless and charge at the same time?

Yeah you get the full interface if connected via the MMI

Ah, glad you went with my tip (tho worried in case it was rubbish!). Interested to know how you get on with this as i may look to do the same given it's cheaper than my rip off £8/month for a sharing SIM on my EE account.

EE are a joke, why would I pay £7 a month to share the data I already pay for?

What are the best deals out at the moment?

Anyone had any further inspired ideas with this?

Just thinking about a SIM for my car that's arriving in a few weeks, but reluctant to pay EE, as above, to use the data I already pay for!!

Perhaps best deal out there is Three 12 month or 12GB SIM for £24.59. I use it and it is perfect.

Ermm that isn't a good deal! why is it £24.59 when you can get the same from 3 direct for £20? i have this sim card that is in the link below and use it in my iPad and iPhone so it should be fine in the A3 sim slot no? Also its pay as you go so no contract. The fact that it has minutes and texts included makes no difference. Just pop it in and use the data. You can actually get unlimited data for £25 a month on pay as you go with is what i sometimes choose. 3 is the best option period when it comes to data and minutes on sim only plans. Iv used them for yrs. Last year i was in Sri Lanka and had free data! Driving the A3 abroad with 3 should give you the abroad use included in the sim too which covers all of europe basically.

Also some data only plans here that offer 20gb for £23 on a pay as you go basis:

Your first link didn't work but your second is for 20gb for £23 A MONTH which is way more than most of us need. I still think that £25 for 12gb PAYG across 12 months (not per month!) is a good deal but if you can show me that I can get the same for £20 then please give me the link. I could only find this which is £30 for 12gb across 12 months

Ah i see what you mean. it wasn't clear you meant 12GB across 12months in the 1st post. I agree with you, its a good deal if your not a big data user, but still thats only 1gb a month. surely your map updates, daily use of google maps, music streaming will come to way more than that? I use up over 15gb on my iPhone a month. Looking at my usage, Googlemaps alone is 3GB in March so if it was the same in the car, that 12GB wouldnt go very far.

Of course the ideal situation is getting an unlimited data package with your phone, creating a hotspot and connecting the car to it. If this is possible.

I think you can do this with android, something called RSAP, unfortunately I've got an iphone :-(
The 3 12 month 1gb per month has lasted fine for me but I'm expecting it to drop off soon so looking for a replacement.

I wouldn't use the car SIM for music streaming, that would still be handled by my phone anyway. I would anticipate 1GB a month to be enough for map updates & traffic etc...

Three are offering 200mb of free data a month on their SIM cards (no plan required)

I only use the audi connect unit for TMC online, or Google map search. Plenty of data have never ran out of the 200mb.

The google street view/google map view is data heavy however

Just for information I have been running the Tech pack with SIM since August 2014 and my data usage per month averages out at 485MB so the 12GB per 12 months at £25 is more than enough for me. A few points though:
1. I use Google Earth all the time but the data that it uses depends on whether you are often visiting new areas. It caches the map overlay so f you go to the same places then it doesn't re-download. I have tested with and without and despite earlier comments I don't find it data heavy.
2. I do not do music streaming which would be heavy on the data usage.
3. I use the Hot Spot for one device in the car.
4. I reckon that £2 per month with the Three PAYG SIM is a steal!

Hope this helps.

Worthwhile keeping an eye on this, 24GB, 24Months

At the moment it is £40.12 but I have seen it at about £27 back in January, Amazon exclusive.

Yes I saw that back when they were offering it but I'd just bought a 12 month one. Definitely worth looking out for but don't hold your breath ......

Of course it just depends how much data you'll use. This would cost £60 a year compared with £25. My advice is to start with a short period PAYG SIM and then see how much data you're using. Once you ascertain that then you can see what amount of data makes sense for you. I started with a 3 3GB/ 3 month PAYG SIM and saw that 1GB per month is enough for me - hence my move to a 12 month / 12GB SIM. Be careful of some of EE contracts - they offer 2GB per month (for example) but if you don't use the 2GB then hard luck as the next month you begin with a new 2GB - there is no carry over allowed.

All you need to do is get a hold of a Three sim, pop it into a phone, navigate to three.co.uk/freedata and register.

200mb is all you need for TMC. Everything else on Audi connect is useless.

I wish I'd known about that a week ago before I ordered the 12 month payg sim from Three.
