is this standard on the face lift A3 ? I'm sure I read somewhere a while back that there was some new EU legislation that required all new cars to have it

Audi have options that are available that provide some form of emergency braking. One is called Adaptive Cruise Control with Pre-Sense Front which costs £475 and also Pre-Sense Basic which costs £200. As far as I know there is nothing provided as standard. Full details of what these options provide can be had by downloading the current A3/S3 Price List from the Audi UK website. https://www.audi.co.uk/new-cars/a3/a3-sportback.html

Pre sense basic is the system that uses the esp systems g sensors to sense pending disaster and pre tension seatbelts, close windows, turn on hazard lights, and close the sunroof etc. I don't think it'll do any braking though. Certainly there has been no hint of it in the two entry level A3's I've had recently, where my S3 will happily bleep and warn you, and if you're feeling sufficiently brave/reckless/retarded, i can confirm it brakes rather well too.

Pre sense front uses the radar sensor for active cruise control is the one that will monitor for pedestrians and other approaching obstacles and brake for you.

I found out today that if you have the door open slightly to make sure you're not too close the kerb while you're creeping forward the car will do an emergency stop!

Do you have those options in your S3?
Find it kind of strange it isn't standard as SEAT and VW cars have them

Like a lot of things SEAT and VW do not give you choices about what you have as standard on the car. You have what THEY think you want rather that what YOU think you want. You still pay for them whether they are options or not. Audi give the customer the choice.

A good example was when I was deciding on my recent car purchase. I must admit I prefer the VW touch screen system to the Audi MMI. My previous A3 was a 2.0 TDI 184 s-tronic quattro and I wanted the same amount of power and torque in my next one. To have a Golf it would have to have been the GTD with 18" wheels and sport suspension. Perhaps I'm getting old but I much prefer 17" wheels and non-sport suspension. Audi allow me to choose this configuration VW do not. Also the GTD has tinted glass back from the doors, black headlining etc none of which I would want. Audi again give me, the customer, the choice. Whenever you have on a car you pay for. With Audi you only pay for what you want and choose the options that you want to add to get to the spec that YOU want and not the spec that someone at VW has decided that you want. So I purchased the A3 to the spec I wanted and with the options I wanted.

I do indeed. The pre-sense failed when the ACC radar unit died back in January. It's been repaired and auto braking is now back though.

Yeah, it applies the handbrake in case you fall out
