What is going on?

Strange, I never had these come off in my years of owning a few Audis so afraid I don't have any ideas!

All set with a torque wrench?

Yeah they were. Don't know why that would affect the plastic covers coming off though?

Its the covers that are going, I'd thought the torque setting of the actual nuts is not relevent. The nuts themselves aren't loose..

Hahaha muppet on my part. I did not look carefully enough and thought you were losing the bolts.

I would agree that torque settings aren't going to have much relevance to the nut covers!

I've lost a few too. I assumed it was when I used the pressure washer to rinse off the snow foam in my cleaning regime as I found one in the foam that accumulated on the drive. I looked up the cost of replacements and they are only sold in sets of 20. At the rate I'm losing them, I can begin to appreciate why you need 20 spares!

I don't use a pressure washer though, can you send me a link me to where you get them from please?

A few of mine have come off too.
I use an purpose made `air gun` to dry my wheels after cleaning and the forced air does blow em off!
As a matter of interest, these packs of 20...are they from an Audi dealer?

Pressure wash 'can' do it yup. Happened in my last one.

Interesting, over 10 years of owning VAG cars with this style of nut cover I've not lost one. Maybe they aren't as tight on the tolerances as they once were.

Pressure washed a few off my B7. They were really cheap from the dealers.

Sorry can't shed any light on why they are going AWOL or to size being 17mm or not, but just to say I've just got out of ours and double checked and all are still present and correct after 9months and 11k miles.

Would be hugely annoying to me too.

They're 17mm, I took one off and measured the inside hexagon, don't know why I didn't think of that before. Yes it is hugely annoying as it started with one on the rear n/s wheel which the dealership replaced. That went so they sent me another which lasted one journey and now others are missing. If I was paranoid I would think someone is stealing them.

Its bizarre how they seem to be going AWOL, its kinda like that sods law thing when once you get a puncture inevitably you seem to get several following then none for years....

Found these new, genuine Audi ones on fleabay for £16.49 for a full set (20) not sure what they cost via dealers though.

They don't come off that easily so may well be someone with a light touch. This happened to the bolt covers on my Peugeot 206. :(

In reality I doubt if anyone is taking them as they aren't easy to remove as you say. One lasted a single journey before I heard it fly off..

I have sourced the following information from the dealership:
Locking wheel caps 4M0601173A x4 in stock 70p +vat each , normal wheel bolt caps 4M0601173 x16 in stock 70p +vat each

Are these just covers? Noticed whilst washing the car today that it appears I don't have locking nuts

Strange this, perhaps the bolts are greasy? I try not to direct a power washer into the recess for the bolts .Perhaps the covers are not fully pushed on as they should be quite a tight fit or your unlucky to have covers that are slightly out of tolerence for fitment.

Nope sorry but none of the above, I don't use a power washer either and the audi dealership have even had a look. I am sure I've even heard them go. I have a new set now, they're a slightly different colour but of a different design, presumably for the previous model, but they are tighter..

I never received a locking wheel nut "key" and keep meaning to figure it out - is that normal?

Yeah - can't see anything obvious!

One of those things at the back of your mind you keep meaning to sort out.

It's under the spare wheel on mine, I had the dealer check when I picked it up

On my avant, the locking wheel nut is in a tray, under a panel in the boot floor directly behind the back seat.

Thanks. Haven't looked in there as have a boot tray!

Mine was in the polystyrene toolkit holder, avants are different I guess..

Some more info on the disappearing bolt covers. After 9 months, I’ve suddenly started losing mine, 3 to date. So went to my dealer to buy some replacements, much to the surprise of the parts guy who said they shouldn’t just be coming off. He got on the computer, got the part number, got the bits, and off we went to fit them. Only to find the ones on the car we’re different to the ones he got off the shelf. All the covers on all my wheels were a very loose fit and the replacements were a very tight fit......Turns out, the covers fitted on my wheels were for a Q7. The numerical bit of the part number is identical. The only difference is the letter suffix, which is the model identifier. All the covers were replaced with the correct items under warranty. Pat on the back for Vindis Peterborough, great service as usual from them!

That's interesting as I see I've lost another one. I did buy some from amazon that were for the b8. Slightly different colour but a very tight fit...
