currently use my mobile phone as satnav, and need a cradle to attach it either to the dashboard or the windscreen.

Any recommendations?

For the last few phones and cars I've had I've always gone with a Brodit active cradle, keeps the battery up whilst you are using it and they fit nice and neat into your dash

The one in the armrest would make the screen a bit tricky to read

That really shows the scratches on the screen on my phone!

Ran a 12v feed from the driver's side fuse box and butchered a cigarette plug to USB adaptor to power it, that's sat in the space behind the climate control so I don't have to plug it in inside the cockpit.

I like that placement alot

That was my favourite out of the options, the brodit holders come in 2 parts, the part that fits your car and the part that fits your device, you just screw the 2 parts together to make your holder.

The part number of the car part of my holder is 653480, you can usually find them on eBay (new) for a little less than the RRP.

Other than that you can find all the options available and illustrated on http://dsldevelopments.com

If you have any questions feel free to ask, I've been using them for about 15 years, just buy a new back piece each time I change my car and a new front piece each time I change my phone.

I've used one of these magnetic ball with metal plate:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201482431101
The magnetic ball part placed on the dash, above the 0.0 button (looks silly from in and outside of the car) and self adhesive metal plate stick to the phone cover.
When in the car, just wack the phone on it and it stays there.

Good thing is that, I can keep my eye on it, if coppers don't see me and really need to, as it's not far from you where you really should be looking at (ahead).

Checking you phone, when you have it in the armrest or near the climate control is more difficult and take your eyes off the road completely.

Got myself a hardwired phone/sat nav 2 usb port charger that just need to be connected.

My satnav is already connected via usb cigarette lighter charger modified, with fuse and plugged into the fuse box.
Will change it to the new charger, with proper fuse and will use second port for the phone charger wire, fed under the climate control maybe.

Here's how it look's like in my car.
Low light as it was late.
Look's also like a camera. Lol

Update:
Finally managed to take the picture of the magnetic phone holder as just other day fitted dual usb power point.

Here are the results

Looks like you could use your phone as a dashcam with it placed there!

Not really. Tried it.
Mostly it sees the dash in 2/3 of the screen as it's at an angle.
Magnetic ball is right at the dash edge but still makes phone tilted.

Love it there as it's much easier for me to tap the phone few times rather fiddle with it elsewhere.
All obviously safely done when car is stationery.
