S3 MPG with S-Tronic

Hi All - long-time and no posts from me.

Just curious about your S3 MPG. I've moved to the dark side and got a (white) Golf R 5dr with DSG. Currently 400 miles in. Speaking to others on that forum, we all seem to get 12 to 18mpg in slow traffic/city driving, around 25mpg on average and 34mpg on a smooth motorway run.

Crawling speeds in the R return silly mpg - in gear 2 of the DSG, letting it crawl will return 11mpg!

Just wondering if this is across the board...i.e. the same in the S3 as well? Pre-facelift I suppose since the new one has the 7-speed S-Tronic which might skew the mpg figures somewhat.

I'm running on Tesco Momentum if that makes any difference (it doesn't :) )

I can't really say, as mine has arrived yet. But from what people have said in previous threads, the engine should loosen up and get better with more miles... I think 3k was the magic number. I'm sure you should be averaging 28-34mpg from what i've read after that. Have a look at some of the MPG threads on the first page and you'll see what I mean.

Yes around the same for me. Crawling traffic around 15mpg, local runs 21-25, motorway around 36.

Have gotten 42mpg before, but that was driving at 50-60mph down the M1.

Sounds similar to what I'm getting.
I've had it a month so it'll hopefully loosen up a bit.

So far my "long term" (I use that term lightly as my car is <900 miles old) average is 27.7 according to the OBC,

Commuting to work and back I typically get 31-35MPG, but my weekend drives drag that down somewhat :)

I have averaged 35mpg driving B roads at 30-50mph in comfort mode, not tried efficiency mode yet as don't really like the stopstart, did u have it in eco mode? Owners Manuel says my s3 does 44.5 mpg with the new 7speed stronic

Stop / Start is independent of what mode you're in. I disable all the time as I hate it. But you can have it on or off in any mode. Efficiency has a strange "freewheeling" characteristic with the S-Tronic when you lift off the accelerator which takes a bit of getting used to, but I'll never use again it anyway.

The Stop/Start in mine seems quite "aggressive"... if you are slowing up to a red light, coasting in neutral, as soon as you get down to about 4mph the engine turns off! First time it freaked me out a bit since obviously the steering goes veeeery heavy.

When coming up to junctions I just move the lever across to manual and that prevents the start/stop system activating.
At lights I also do that then apply the EPB and take my foot of the brake.

After 4500 Miles my long term average is showing 31.8MPG and I am not taking it easy, although I have no choice in the traffic on my commute.

My average over 17,765m is 30.25mpg (actual, calculated using fuel receipts/mileage).

Not sure what it is over short/city/motorway though as I haven't bothered checking.

Seems like the S3 has better mpg than the R - particularly the 7-speed S-Tronic.

Either way, good information here - thanks all. I miss this forum!

Just because we've got better cars, doesn't mean you can't stick around mate. :whistle2:

(I don't have mine yet tho...)

Shouldn't do either of those things mate.
Only meant to activate once you've come to a halt.
Worth getting it checked?

Yeah, been watching it closely, and reckon when the speedo readout hits 4 mph but steadily decreasing to 0, the stop/start kicks in. It obviously knows I'm coming to a stop and its in neutral. First couple of times it did surprise me.

That is meant to happen. The facelift anticipates a stop and cuts out earlier than any other start/stop Audi I've driven.

Noticed on the PFL too, somewhat annoying but used to it now

Lol! To be honest I do agree a bit! Not much though ;)

That's the first thing I noticed in my R was the S/S. It kicks in before I've even stopped! But if it detects the car in front is moving forward it'll switch the engine on. Just an R special there :)

Same for me, kicks in before coming to a halt (PFL).

The new ones do do this, they switch off when coming to a rolling stop, mine did it. I don't know why everyone hates start stop, I don't have a problem with it at all. I find it works quite well.

Ah, fair enough. Didn't realise it was a new design change.
Just means it'll annoy me even more, cutting in if I slow right down to do a rolling start from a junction etc.
I disliked Start Stop, sounds like I'd hate Start Almost Stop more.
Each to their own though.

There is a tight turn where I live that needs to be done at rolling speed, it would turn off every time I was mid turn and just look like I stall it every time

I thought if you had the wheel turned, it would know you were carrying out a parking manoeuvre and so wouldn't activate stop/start...?

Resurrecting this thread...

I'm finding that the start-stop kicks in even when I've got steering lock on, like slowing on the approach to a roundabout. Kills the engine at about 4mph, with about one-quarter turn on the wheel. Even though I'm still actively turning the wheel! Not pleasant.

Normally I'd guess a software update won't be far away. But looking how tight the CO2 emissions are within the various tax bands, I can imagine Audi would be very wary of modifying any parameters that would potentially push cars into the next band up.

Are you seeing your instantaneous mpg? I'd be amazed if the average ever dropped as low as 11 while you are moving.

Worst I've ever had tank to tank on a hard tank is 21mpg. Best is 31. Average is 26/27.

I was using Momentum but always felt uncomfortable with it, I'm running V Power now. My average mpg where it would be 23mpg is now 27mpg, I am gaining 30-40 miles range a tank.. much better and I am now happier the car is getting what it should.

Normally V-Power has always caused me to lose MPG, the S3 loves it!!

1500 miles in and my average is 32.8 mpg, this mostly due to my motorway commute which goes up to 38/39mpg 3rd lane speeds using individual setting which has engine set to auto.

Off motorway in Dynamic it's reasonable but once the gearbox is in S the mpg falls away.

For the performance im really happy with the efficiency, my girlfriends 1.6 petrol DS3 has similar consumption and zero power.
