Hi Guys,

Here is the thing, next month i'm getting a A3 150 hp, and the first thing after getting it is going to the store to chip it, i've read around and found that a DV upgrade is necessary to avoid boost leak and loss of power, but some one old me that a BOV will have the same effect, avoid issues and protect the system, and will have the nice blow off sound

What guys do you think?

Also could anyone tellme the model of bulbs that this baby comes with?:blackrs4:

I've got a Hyperboost Recirculating Valve on my 180bhp 1.8T, got it from AMD, they put them one all their cars instead of the forge ones, (which is the one i went in for) you can get it in black too so it looks a lot like the standard Bosch one, nice and subtle and a definate improvement.

Either get a aftermarket (piston type) Diverter valve from Forge, AMD etc or simply renew your existnig one from Audi for approx £20.

Leave the BOV's to the boy racers!

Can I ask what benefits are on buying a forge recirculator? What does this valve do that the OEM bosch one doesnt?

I've thought about buying one but never really heard anyone rave about the difference and wondered if it was actually worth the money.

If its not broke, dont fix it!

The advantage of using an aftermarket unit is simply due to reliability. You can service the aftermarket kits. But these are approx £60 - £80 and the standard OEM ones are only £20 (And the standard ones are more reponsive).

Some prefer to fit the aftermarket ones for piece of mind.

why do people do it then ? if the audi unit is more responsive then why replace it with an exspensive aftermarket one. I have forge DV (unfitted). For whats it worth why spend 100 pound on a uprated DV when you could replace the standard more responsive Audi part five times over ?

Is it about the whoosh noise you get from an aftermarket DV, compared to the OEM unit?

I don't know, im just asking.

The Standard Bosch ones have a flexible diaphram in them which can become faulty quite easily, the aftermarket ones are piston type ones with a piston and spring mechanism and not a diaphram. They hardly ever fail.

As for the standard Bosch ones being more responsive, i would have to disagree, I have been told by AMD and have felt first hand the difference between the two and the aftermarket recirc DV definately allows the engine(turbo) to pick up quicker.

I paid £85 for my Hyperboost recirc DV from AMD and can definately feel the difference with the pick up. Worth the money in my eyes.

Pete69zx - Its not always about the "whoosh" noise! the recirc DV's produce no noise or at least a very faint whoosh, where as the BOV's produce a whoosh. For the 1.8T engine a recirculating DV is the way to go as the BOV sometimes bring up and error code

Well, mine makes a loud whoosh, not a quiet one (i know its each persons interpretation of loud vs quiet). Mine is a Forge DV.:superman:

so your saying your forge dv makes a whooosh sound???

i thought with dv you dont get that whoosh sound, it put me off bu buying a standard dv

i recently brought turbosmart dual port valve, which allows you to blow to the atmosphere or plumb back to engine. its fully adjustable. my friend is going to bring it for when he comes back from russia.

It most certainly does:yum:

Its not as loud as say some cars, such as a car running a BOV, but it is loud enought to hear inside the car & also people outside the car can hear it when i change gear (you can see them turn around as if to say, WTF was that:no: )

To be fair, the Bosch ones are pretty hardy. My A3 was on its second one when I got rid of the car at 102K miles.

Do bear in mind AMD have a vested interest in flogging you stuff!

If you noticed a huge difference between your Bosch valve and the aftermarket one I'd suggest your Bosch one they replaced was faulty.

There have been numerous independent tests of various aftermarket and OEM DVs (http://www.s4biturbo.com/art-dvtests.php for instance) and all tend to show that piston type DVs act slightly slower due to the inertia of the piston. However I doubt you could tell the difference on the road.

Mine too. But its not actually the DV who amplifies that sound, its the air filter you have. OEM filter wont never let it whoosh, aftermarket high flow panel filters let a bit whoosh... V-flow cone filters give a stronger and decent whooosh. Finally, CAI systems will make you a gdmf whoosher

I have Hyperboost DV and V-flow air filter... and I can describe mine as a kkshhhhhh... rather than a whoosh...

Which brand of CAI do you guys have? it is necessary to remove the engine cover as in the new A3 or GTI, which provides the more power gains?
Thank you

The engine cover no. Just the air filter box if you are installing cone filter or CAI.
CAI should give you some extra hps at high rpms, at low rpms it will lag air flow as air need to travel all the way up through the pipe. For me, the most efficient is panel filter or cone filter.

Unfortunately none will provide any sort of noticable power gains - its all noise.

Sometimtes a nice noise tho!

Timbo is spot on.

Due to the way they work, Piston Divertor valves will react slower than diapragm valves - thats why the forge eliminator was born. Its a servicable aftermarket diapragm divertor valve. You then get the best of both worlds, an allegedly longer lasting valve thats user servicable, and a fast reacting valve.

Aftermarket DV's do not increase engine performance whatsoever, or at least they shouldn't if they're doing their job correctly.

Also bear in mind that people sometimes have problems once they've serviced the DV's themselves.

For me, its less hassle and worry to just replace an OEM one regularly. Once you've replaced the clips for the first time, its a 2 minute job.
