Hey guys,

Another one of those long time lurkers who read the forums. After selling my A3 8P last month and telling myself to hold out and save until the Summer to get a Golf R or S3, I jumped in right away and now get my hands on a 2014 3dr S-Tronic S3 tomorrow!

Looking for some last minute advice before I sign the money over - is it safe to say that the main dealer add-ons are not worth the money? I'm mainly keen on GAP insurance due to the value of the car, its a lot of money to part with!:)bye:) GAP insurance seems like its essential.

All going well I'll be able to go on a good drive in the good weather! The car pretty much has all the stuff I'd want (maybe not - 2 extra doors) so I don't have plans in terms of modifications. Maybe some VCDS tweaks if I find someone local!

I'll probably get a few pictures tomorrow...

Hi Danny,

Congratulations! The dealer packages aren't worthy of much good to say. The smart repair service is definitely a smart repair service and all done out the back of a van, painting in a masked off square. There is a thread on here somewhere, somebody kerb damaged an RS3 wheel (diamond cut) they came out to smart repair it, just painted silver paint over it in the middle of the diamond cut finish.. insane!!!!
The tyre insurance could be good, I know a few people that have successfully claimed but I wouldn't spend my money on it.

GAP insurance, whatever you do don't buy the dealer package for £500. You get great cover from ALA, I had the full package with a maximum claim value of £22,500 I think and the policy was £250 for 4 years!

If you enter PISTON12 you get 12% off too

I'm new to this forum, ordering s3 saloon nano grey BE but could do with so pics if you guy have any ?? Cheers dave

I took the dealer Gap to seal the deal as they worked it into the figures, however the actual price was £750 for 3 years........no that's not a typo!
You have 30 days to cancel and cancel I did for a full refund. I've taken it through ALA for £130 for 3 years.
I'm sure the dealership will be unhappy as they'll loose the commission they banked on but it's all part of the game in my book

Hi Danny :sign welcome:

Good luck tomorrow.
I've had alloy / puncture insurance and GAP on my last two car and my wife's current one, all from Audi n
But only because I get them as part of the negotiations. Wouldn't pay full price for any of them though.

£750? I think they ripped you off there... Audi charge £500 nationwide for it and can't change the price, increase or discount it because it is legislated that they have to sell it to everybody the same price.

That is one hell of a saving though, nice one!

Guys - thanks for the recommendation for ALA, like for like policy to Audi's is £236 cheaper! (additional thanks to Tom.H for the discount code!) I'll likely just go with 'return to invoice' as the car isn't brand new; this saves me £200+ and its for 4 years rather than 3.

I'll look that thread up regarding the RS3 wheel repair - it sounds ridiculous.

Thanks - I'll remember that in the morning. I don't know much about their alloy/puncture policy but i'll keep in mind its not worth it at full price!

Welcome mate show us pics.

I'll post them here when I get the chance!

It was a Sytner policy so no idea if it falls under the same umbrella.
If they'd have laid out the price in front of me I'd have said your having a laugh, but it was a "if we throw in the gap, will you buy the car?" moment so I said yes. They never actually said how much it was!

My local dealer offered it to my for £300 for 3 years, i still turned it down as ALA was cheaper, and for 4 years back to invoice.

When was that? For the last 12 months they haven't been allowed to discount it.
In true panto fashion, oh yes they have.
Got the alloy/puncture cover and GAP for about half the normal price just in Mid September there on both our cars delivered in November. My S5 before that (albeit 3 yrs ago) I got all of that plus (the useless) Guard X paint and interior treatment free as part of the deal.
They probably show it internally as me paying full price but a bigger discount on the car itself to balance the books though.

It's maybe dealer specific, the dealer I bought from aren't allowed to discount it. I know the girl well and if she could have discounted it for me, she would have done.

That is very naughty. They can discount all of the damage cover, but GAP is an insurance product and they apparently can only charge the same to everyone. I've had that from 3 Audi centres.

Sorry about the lack of response, it's been a busy two days! I've had a good run in the car - it's fantastic! Had a little hiccup on collection as there was a scratch on the bonnet - I got the "I should expect that for a 3 year old car" line, but they took it in and tried to buff it out and infill with an off white colour - so you can notice it if you look for it. I don't know where I stood with getting a proper repair including the stone chips etc so I accepted their quick attempt.

As promised (albeit slightly later than planned!) here it is:

1

I do like a lot of the small features in it, and I like having the Sat-Nav at hand. I did wonder though, is it possible to update the maps to 2017? Some of the roads I have noticed display different speed compared to the Nav guide speed - the Esrkine Bridge for example is a 70 on the guide but not actually on the road. Is this a service Audi provide, to update the maps? Better yet, is this something I can do?

That is gutting - I hope that gets resolved!

Thanks Sandra - I'll check the VCDS map once I build up a little list of tweaks I'd like to ask for, do you guys have any "must haves"? I was thinking about the locking beep, the oil temp/guage on display (why is this not obvious?) and the permanent 4-exhaust pipes on.

Thanks again!

If you have the tech pack you can download the map updates from the myaudi website if available.
I think the tech pack comes with the first 6 updates (which I think are 6 monthly)

I like the idea of a shopping list of tweaks. Hopefully one of our lovely members will have the unit with them at one of the shows this year :)

Perhaps we could start a thread of must have tweaks

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I do not have the tech pack. I phoned Audi today regarding updating the maps and I was told it would be just under £300 to get the new SD card and have it installed. He said the only way to update them is by going to Audi. I can't see everyone paying that every time they want a Nav update...

Well that's nonsense, haha. You can order an up to date SD card on eBay for around £90-£100? You can buy a year out of date one for £30-£40. If yours is 4 years old for example, the £40 one might be better than nothing.

I don't see what needs installing with the new SD card, push to release the old one and push to insert the new in the glovebox haha.

I think they are linked to the car so buying an old one won't work. I think that's how they get away with charging stupid amounts as you can't get it done elsewhere. Could be wrong obviously.

I thought it was daft as well, but he said the only way I could update was through Audi. He said the 2017 maps were a matter of days away from release as there is a product code for it but no stock yet. He stumped me when he mentioned installing - I can't see why it would be anything other than plug and play pretty much ha!

That's good to know - if that is the case I'd happily buy a used 2016 one for ~£30! (when the 2017 ones replace them...)

EDIT - just seen the post above from @Supa Koopa - that will explain the installation part - coding it to the car!

Hi Danny
Your car looks ace.
If I'm not mistaken it looks like the picture was taken on the A82 near Loch Lomond, a road I travel regularly.
It would have been a great drive in the S3 with the glorious weather we've had up here the last couple of days.

I always thought you could get any card? I'm sure I've had someone at Audi tell me before you can get used ones online.

You can get anything online but it doesn't mean it will work!. When you buy the SD card there are two seperate & different security codes that are entered to get the card to work & therefore 'locks' the card to that car... preventing copying it to share / sell on to each other. There are many many previous threads discussing this.

Hello Bill - thank you! Well spotted - it was really sunny this weekend (seems like we've used 40% of our annual sun quota this weekend) and it is usually a good place to go for a drive. The traffic heading towards Glasgow was worse than expecting though so we pulled over there and got some pics of the car!

Oh, interesting I had it made out to me to suggest any card was compatible with any car.

I'd rather put £300 down as a deposit and change the car, haha.
