This is my 2.0Tdi engine in my 2008 A4 b7 s-line cab.

I have removed the engine trim cover. Can anyone tell me what engine it is?

Cheers

Says on the timing belt cover. May be a BLB, BRE, BRD but the timing belt cover will confirm which.

Ian , service book, inside front cover there is the factory label, it tells you what the engine is and what options you have etc, everything you need to know is on that label, well as it left audi that is.

The engine type is always shown on the build sticker, there should be a copy of this in the maintenance handbook, there is also usually one in the spare wheel well. Also have a look on the weight plate in the engine compartment that has the gross weight etc this sometimes has the engine type.
I would say it's a BPW engine though.

The service books got lost with original, owner.

then there should be some other labels on the car as desertstorm says....

Ok will have a look tomorrow on the car. The books are lost

Have a look on the vechicle ID document the v5. The engine serial number is in there and it's typically the engine code followed by numbers.

if you goto ecp or tps website and search for a spare part for your car , lets say a an injector, enter your vin or chassis number and it will show what your car is based on those numbers, it is very unlikely the engine has been replaced or worse case if it has then it should be the same unit.

I also now think it's a BPW engine.

The main issue you have with 2.0 TDI engines of that era is the drive for the oil pump and balancer shaft. Early cars used chains later gear drives. There are more problems with certain engine types compared to others depending on the VIN number range.

The hex drive shaft for the oil pump can wear resulting in loss of oil pressure followed rapidly by failure of the turbo and then all the nasty things that happen when you lose oil pressure.

I think the cam issues are more a result of the wrong oil being used for servicing or poor service history or oil flow due to oil pump drive issues.
The PD engines were always very sensitive to oil quality which is why a good fully synthetic 507.00 should be used.
The cam lobes are quite narrow because of the width of the lobes used on the PD injector and oils specified for PD engines have more additives to cope with extreme pressures on the cam.

If you look at this picture there is what seems to be oil residue that has leaked. Not sure if the part where the leak may be coming from.

Tighten everything, clean it and see if it happens again/pinpoint exactly where it's coming from.

Oil stays oily for ages so it could have been there a while or could be very gradual, mine looses a tiny bit through areas every now and then because the oil is so thin.
