If it's anything like Android auto. Once it's plugged in via USB you have to use the interface on the MMI. I disabled Audi Smartphone Interface as I don't like Android Auto, and now I can use the USB for charging and still use Bluetooth for music streaming.

Thanks mate I'll give it a go

Yeah CarPlay disables Bluetooth altogether so to do streaming you need a compatible app to CarPlay l, which will show up on the CarPlay home screen and work just like it does on your phone.

Does anyone have issues connecting Car Play, my car always recognises the phone plugged in, can access playlist etc but is then unable to play the music.

As soon as I disconnect and reconnect it works.

I have this problem also on my new 2017 S5 Coupe... doesn't play then unplug/plug in all works with spotify or apple music.

Must be same issue as assume both our cars will have the same software being 17 models.

The functionality is great but so annoying how buggy it is.

+1, pain in the bum when it won't play music via CarPlay despite the phone suggesting it is playing i.e. Problem is the audio doesn't switch in the car. And while I'm whining why isn't there a shortcut to get back to CarPlay screen instead of going through main menu. Grrr.

Yes you can, but when you plug in to the cable the settings adjust in the car and it automatically disables the Bluetooth connection until you mentally switch it back on.

Go into your media, use the left menu button and select Bluetooth.. it will ask you to turn Bluetooth on, you might have to connect your phone but then it will work. When you reconnect with a cable, it will disable again until you go back in and press the activate button again.

Good tip

Do you have the same car play connection issues?

I don't use car play.

I started to, but didn't like how if I wanted to go from the nav back to it.. you have to go to menu, scroll around to car play and then if you wanted to make a phone call you have to go back through the pretty user hostile interface. I much prefer being able to click; nav, media, tel... and end up where I want to be straight away. Plus my sound quality was appalling through car play, ruined the car.. the I tried Audi's interface and it was amazing.

My issues is because I use Spotify the functionality on car play is much better for the app. The sound is poorer though

Hm, it's a difficult one! I use Apple Music, so I don't have any issues with that.

Yeah this is weird, as the sound quality through my B&O is much better through CarPlay than over Bluetooth. But that's to be expected.

Will test it through the MMI hard wired.

Yes the sound is always better hard wired, but bluetooth isn't bad either.

Try the sound quality with car play off, use the Audi interface.. you might have a big surprise (some have the issues, some don't)

Tried it earlier today and there was no noticeable sound difference. Is it quite a signifant drop in quality for you @AudiNutta ?

Yes there is a great drop in quality for me. It is at higher volume, the speaker protection kicks in really early and is very difficult to listen to. I am happy back with the Audi interface.

dont forget you get album art, and the ability to browse albums and playlists when using hard wired too! (vs BT )

You do not get album art but you can still use the playlists when using BT. Mine works fine.

By the way, not all but some have an issue with car play and I am one of them. Sounds so bad.

Under settings, general, restrictions, turn on restriction for car play..

Nice and easy, don't take this for exactly how to do it but it's something along these lines.

Go onto the media function, use the left tab to bring up the menu on the left and scroll down to what will show as your device connected in USB 1 / 2 wherever it is. Select that, I think it will prompt you to disable car play then. Remember, if you do that then your phone calls are no longer hard wired and you will have to go into the telephone menu, activate Bluetooth and connect the phone.

Once you've done this once, it remembers it until you go to click back on Car Play.

The Audi interface runs hoops around the Car Play. If it had a shortcut button to Car Play, it might not be so bad (without the reduction in audio quality) but otherwise using Car Play is nothing less than an inconvenience.

Awesome, did this and it worked perfectly.

Must be a reason why there is a sound quality issue for some and not others. There is a slight change in volume I've noticed but the quality is exactly the same on mine. CarPlay is very handy for Spotify I find and also "Hey Siri".

For those that have the issues, which speaker package do you have? Standard, Audi Sound System or B&O?

Mine is a A3 Sportback from March 17, 2017.

It has Audi Sound System installed.

I know there is another pretty big thread somewhere on this forum about this issue, but now I can't find it.

Standard audi system.

It sounds fine until you get to the top 3/4 of the volume, when it aggressively dips the sound because of speaker protection.
