Launching with traction control

Hi,

I'm only new and the A7 biTDI is the first car I've owned that has launch as standard and although I'm a reasonably sensible driver, I have been showing off launch with a few family and friends (in safe places).

I've done about 4 now (all in Sport mode/dynamic) and they are great however the last time I forgot to turn off the traction control, so I raised the power steadily (3/4 throttle) to 3k revs then as it gets there release the brake as I floor the throttle fully. However because the traction was on there was a bit of a clunk noise but the launch was much better and you really felt it even as the driver.

My wife who had been present (as the front passenger) for 3 of the launches said "What did you do differently as that was mental that time?!" and that was the only difference.

Is it safe to launch with traction on? As I'd read all over you should turn traction off just for it to enable you to launch and there was a bit of a clunk but it was definitely instantly quicker off the line.

Guess there's not many launchers lol.

Well I got the car up to temp, found a quiet area and did about 10 launches (giving a few mins inbetween each launch) today, 5 with traction on and 5 with traction off and this time i didn't get any clunks and with traction on gave me a better launches everytime.

Reading in to it the reason you should turn traction in most cases is because the car usually can't find traction quick enough so interferes too much hampering your launch, however every time i've read this it's been on front and rear wheel cars.

So I can only assume that the quattro system is so good at finding grip that the traction system gets involved so little at the beginning that its not intrussive but does help with the launch.

Also to remember i have the 8 speed Triptronic so I don't know if it's the same on the s-tronic boxes. In all my tests today it was lightly raining but I still didn't get any slipping or screech from the tyres which shows how great this quatro system.

@Chobbit - As far as I'm aware you won't be able to use LC properly without the traction control deactivated
A bit more info on LC here -

Yeah I remember reading through your thread a few months ago and I did look through the manual too about needing to turn off the traction control which is why I did for the first few times but then just forgot and it launched much quicker and stronger, if that wasn't an official launch still then I've discovered Launch+ lol. However I did also notice that the manual only talks about launching with S-Tronic boxes and mine has the 8 speed ZF Triptronic box so I wonder if that's why it works?
