Tailgaters

What usually works for me is spraying my windscreen washer jets, obviously when you're at speed they whisp over the windscreen and land on theirs, wait until they've cleared it and simply repeat the process :haudrauf:. You can see them getting more and more agitated each time, they then usually back off.

Obviously doesn't work in the rain :superman:

Combined with the headlamp washers it results in an even bigger torrent

Err, you boys are aware of the invention of windscreen wipers, right? I can't see how a light misting, in a country where it rains 106 days of the year would be that much of an agitation.

Unless of course the guy tailgating you is in this;

Appreciate it's not very mechanically sympathetic but I always found slowly pulling on the handbrake was quite a effective way to get a tailgater to back off. Do NOT try this with the electronic handbrake!

To be fair, insurance for woman has always been favourable since they statistically are less likely to claim. That to me is a good indication that, on average, women are actually better drivers than men...

Not that insurance companies can use sex when calculating premiums anymore...for some reason...

I like your thinking. Some woman are really good drivers, though I do know a few who forgot to spec indicators for their cars, they just drift into their chosen lane. :) x

You seem to be going by the assumption that the post was targeted directly at you, when it's very clear that it is not. I was posting commentary on the content of a variety of threads and even a variety of forums. You then take particular exception to one key snipet in my post, that was not part of the key message and was put in place ostensibly to lighten a piece that was otherwise a little bit serious and heavy in its message. That part, in case it still isn't totally clear, was not the key message I was trying to convey but an irreverent observation that the entire human race is essentially founded, sustained and driven by the basic urge to jiggle bits of men's bodies inside bits of women's bodies, and crucially, that this is altogether more successful if they actually like and respect each other.

Returning back to the actual point of the post; Society, common sense, experience and articles of law in nations across the world determined some considerable time ago that women are not second class citizens and are undeserving of criticism or discrimination purely based upon their gender. This has been the case for nearly a century, women have repeatedly proven that are are equally as capable as men in all areas of endeavour, so why do so many people still consider it acceptable to discriminate against them? They are still paid less, face greater obstacles to progression, and are subject to ridiculous restrictions on things like joining golf clubs or being members of the clergy. I'm aware that the issue is far wider than this thread can tackle, and have no wish to trivialise centuries of suffrage, so in this case I'm concentrating simply upon why it is acceptable in discussions on a motoring forum such as this to generalise that women are bad drivers? No-one here is writing that black people are bad drivers, it's taken as read that such commentary is totally and utterly unacceptable in the modern age and yet the race relations act didn't make discrimination on grounds of race illegal until 2 generations after the same equality was afforded to women. The legal status of women as equals to men has been enshrined for a period longer than the vast majority of us have been alive, yet in every area of society we still still see things like this cropping up;

Now, perhaps I'm not reading your message correctly, or perhaps you didn't write quite what you thought you were writing, but it looks very much like you hold a heartfelt belief that just because you like having sex with women shouldn't mean you should have to hold your tongue and tell an entire group of total strangers, women included, that women have poor standards of driving because they're women...

If that's the case then it is undisguised discrimination, and even worse than that, its discrimination based upon ignorance. Now I dont know you on a personal level @4K, but since this is the Information Age, you've managed to log onto this website, and you've certainly managed to put some cogent arguments forward in other threads on other topics, so I don't think you could possibly be ignorant of the fact that women are as worthy, as talented and as skilful as you are, and in some arenas will possess skills far in excess of your own.

More likely, you just didn't spot that singling out women as 'bints' just isn't very polite, and just because these people couldn't give the tiniest **** whether you're driving a fast car or a slow one doesn't mean they shouldn't be on the road, or that they should vacate it at the first opportunity because you're on it. You may also have spotted that writing such things, even if for comedic effect (see my own "pants' dialogue for an example), can backfire, be misunderstood, or perhaps even be construed as being downright offensive and ignorant...

One could have only assumed that the post you made previously could be associated with mine, and especially given that it was in my thread. Light hearted or not, the prose and undertone of the rest of your post lead me to believe that you were also being extremely serious. Likewise, I do not know you on a personal level, and do understand you like to make some funnies on a lot of these threads, which is good for business as far as I'm concerned. However, as you are well aware, especially since you are highlighting this in your response, things can be misconstrued online and cannot be known what particular emotive expression was originally intended in the making of a post.

Now, back to your implication that I'm being sexist. As aforementioned, the gender to me does not matter. But in my experiences, I have noticed a considerable and discernible difference in driving standards and 'near-misses' with certain sexuality types than others. Do I care that these are women? No. Do I care that we have trash drivers that happen to be men/women/non binary/alien on the roads? Yes. You disagree? Excellent, good for you, you are entitled to your opinion based on your own empiricism.

You seem to be missing the point and thrust of the OP however, and clinging on quite vigorously to 50% of 4 of my mentioned 'categories of drivers'. I stand by those examples given, and generally speaking (and I am generalising here), those that I've encountered are clueless when it comes to differentiating models of cars.

I think issues like this only goes to highlight why people in England are so repressed with their feelings; because even on a car forum you cannot express the way you feel about what you experience without someone chirping in and complaining that it could be interpreted as 'ignorant'/'sexist'/'insert other complainant term here'.

Did you happen to notice what hair colour these people that drive poorly had...? Lets say they were all brown haired, would one of your bullet points have been 'People with brown hair that cant distinguish between slow/fast cars'...? I doubt it. In the unlikely event you did notice their hair colour, you would of just muttered 'bit of a coincidence that they were all brown haired'.

So you see, the only reason you would mention sex, or indeed skin colour or any other demographic, is due to a preconceived notion that it has any bearing on their ability to conduct or behave in a certain manner. Until people start thinking that it's just as irrelevant to mention the persons sex as it is to mention their hair colour, or eye colour, the problem will persist. If there is absolutely no evidence that women are worse than men at judging speed of things, then why even mention it...?

Now why might your experience suggest otherwise? Lets say I were to mention to you that red cars tend to be driven badly. All of a sudden you will start noting red cars that do silly things on the road. You will come back to me and say "you're right there are loads of red cars driven badly!" All of a sudden if someone mentions a car doing something bad, you will go 'I bet it's a red car' and when it happens to be one, it will reaffirm your belief.
Of course the colour of a car is wholly irrelevant, and the reason you think red cars are particularly bad is because you don't note all the times other coloured cars do daft things. If you did, you would realise that blue/white/black/silver cars are just as likely as red...i.e. if you actually had objective data.
This is just one example of how our experience can be biased (often referred to as survivor bias). So the fact people get picked up for mentioning women when discussing an issue is not 'PC gone mad', it's a fundamental inability to distinguish between subjective experiences and reality, and that's what frustrates me.

Put simply - yes I would. Now you have your presupposition that I wouldn't; but you do not know me, or my predispositions, and you're now assuming that everyone is the same and thinks the same - not true. I could interpret that as prejudice and intolerant because you're not noticing or being aware of my idiosyncratic differences which you perhaps do not have. See what you've done there?

Reality is interpreted differently, depending on your beliefs. You haven't provided any statistics or proof to disprove my everyday experiences. Note, you also did not mention at all anything relating to any other drivers in your post, you just seem to be drawing more attention to turning my balanced post of genders into one that implies that it's discriminatory by jumping on the bandwagon with GSB.

You should read this post on women drivers, it makes for entertaining reading - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/road-safety/11280402/Why-women-drivers-drive-me-mad.html - it might blow your brain, but it was actually written by a woman - who would have thought!

The entire point of my post was that by mentioning it at all is the issue. I am not making any other presumptions about you other than you mentioned sex when discussing poor drivers.

You have also misunderstood my definition of reality. This would be a scientific and objective understanding that women are no worse than men at driving. My experience, yours or anyone else's experience that they are is irrelevant. Our experiences are subjective and biased and therefore meaningless, as I have already outlined in my example. My experience that every time I walk outside and the road is flat doesn't change the reality that the earth is round...

The reason I didn't pick up on your other examples because they aren't clearly defined. What is a bint, or a chav...? These people by your definition are characters that are already flawed. It's the same with your middle aged incompetent men. They are by definition, incompetent. Of course they are annoying....

And unfortunately, the burden of proof lies with you, not me. I have no assertion that females are worse at driving than men, as I realise any experiences I have about the matter are limited and bias. I am very unlikely to note the driving ability of all the females I have driven on the roads with, and even if I were to, its unlikely to represent 50% of the population... If there is evidence, then I am all ears....

Of course, even if it were true, it would still be a generalisation. It is well known that young male drivers are the most likely to be involved in an accident, but its still unfair list 'young male drivers who drive like tools'....

I would of thought the fact insurance was always cheaper for women was a good indication of the opposite relationship, but you see to suggest this is flawed?

Finally, not sure how your article proves anything....why is a woman making the same wrong assumptions about driving ability and sex any less wrong...?

But I guess they lie alot haha.

Anyway I personally think it's to do with your personal intrests. I think people who are into cars and care for there cars. And are into the whole car guy/girl thing are better than people who have no interest in driving.

E.g. if I had to vote on who will crash out of a girl or guy who's into cars and a girl/guy who is not interested in cars. I'm guessing the person not interested would have less care and interest in driving well ?

I could be so wrong but my girlfriend drives a a1 and is passionate about her cars like me. Washes it herself and so on.
Wants to learn stuff from me.

And she drives real good.

I havent watched the videos but i always laugh when i see threads about bad driving. Its usually about someone not indicating or overtaking at 85mph. In my view, the standards on UK roads are incredible. Last year i was living in the Middle East and now im living in Italy. People really need to get abroad and experience other cultures & driving standards. I crash nearly every day here. Im constantly soiling myself (as is the girlfriend!)......everyone thinks they are Nigel Mansell, cutting you up, driving in the middle of the road, scooters everywhere...... its mayhem! It makes me really appreciate the UK. Driving standards and the way people react to it are among my top laughs when i hear it mentioned, much along the same lines as "we pay too much tax in the UK", "the NHS isn't good quality", "i cant find a job", "the UK is an expensive country".......i could go on!!!

Just for a bit on the sexist debate in this thread, I was in KSA for a while working when an advert came out on national TV. The advert showed a western woman getting a puncture in a car, getting out to fix it & getting abused by men. In small letters under the screen scrolled through saying something like " thats why women are safe in KSA, we care for our women"!!! Caused quite a stir! Obviously not related to how they drive but thought id share!

In saying the above im not condoning any bad driving, just a general comment....not trying to attract any bad/negative remarks!

@Ormesome indeed! I've always been impressed with German drivers especially on their Autobahns, their lane discipline and awareness of approaching high speed vehicles is superb. Trouble is at 300+ clicks distinguishing between a good German driver from a lacklustre Belgian one can be difficult lol. Had one occasion when a Belgian driver pulled out from behind a lorry with a closing delta close on 200kph. Good job I was already braking....

When I was in Rome recently I was amazed by the antics of the drivers, scooter riders in particular are mental. They zigzag from lane to lane into impossible gaps without signalling or by your leave. Every green light is like the starting grid at Silverstone, even the grannies turn into Valentino Rossi. Never, ever try crossing on the red man!
The odd thing though is that they are also very accepting of the other road users antics, there's no tension, blaring horns or waving fists and they treat cyclists with respect. Weirdly I never saw any crashes either.
The general default position for many in this country is intolerance, someone sounds a horn and it's a challenge to a fight to the death or, even worse, someone wants to overtake you.
How many times have you caught up with the conga following a slow moving vehicle? All you need to do is move out for a look and 9 times out of 10 the driver in front will close the gap. They don't want to overtake but they don't want you to either.
Many blame caravans and trucks, I don't, I blame the ignorant, myopic lemmings of both genders and all colours who seem to form a very large percentage of UK road users.

Ridiculous statement to make? How? Because you say it is? The only ridiculous statement being made is the one you're making glazing over the fact that someone may have the ability to correlate certain factors i.e. brown hair color, or any other trait, together to form an opinion about a category of drivers, thus being prejudice yourself.

My experiences aren't irrelevant at all, not to me. They're perfectly relevant to this thread, which is debatable, and on which is the whole point of a forum. You seem to have missed the point of that, in your uppity mightier than thou responses.

'Bints/chavs' you are free to look up on Urban dictionary at any time you desire, and you'll find your required definition.

With regards to insurance, you're wrong. It's not cheaper for women anymore, which is what another post has mentioned, so your argument is flawed in that regard.

Lastly, the article wasn't 'proof' of anything. You seem to think this is University Challenge where you'll win for the smartest comeback. It was merely a post to highlight how there are others out there who form a different opinion to yourself. It's called free speech, something potentially intolerable to some I know, but luckily one in which we still have some form of control over.

I travel to Italy regularly, so I know exactly what you mean, however they are much better in terms of avoidance driving than here, as a result of this madness. You have a constant pull/push situation here in the UK where you may come across someone who appears like they know what they're doing, and the next, someone who appears to know what they're doing, but then doesn't, and does something erratic, and leaves you in a very false sense of security. The great thing about Italian roads is that you always know where you're standing (or not ;), i.e. they all drive erratically.

However, the UK standards of driving compared to other EU neighbours like Germany or CZ is poor.

Many blame caravans and trucks, I don't, I blame the ignorant, myopic lemmings of both genders and all colours who seem to form a very large percentage of UK road users.

totally agree @Stevieb2905 ! especially the horn part! i was going around with an angry face, road rage, shouting and tooting everyone... After 5months here iv calmed down and now joining in. A toot really is a sign of wanting a fight or that they did something terrible. They wave their arms around for a while and drive off at a billion mph in their Fiat 500 shouting "Inglese Stupido"! Doing 80kph in a built up area is fine! zigzagging is fine. People in the UK dont know the word "tailgaiting" until they have experienced Italian driving. Brake test them? pah! go faster! its your fault for being slow!! Bumps/potholes at the side of the road. Stupido! drive in the middle of the road!

Actually agree with you @4K regarding the push pull situation and knowing where you stand. I think thats why it works here. Everyone is the same whereas in the UK its all pot luck of who you meet on the roads...

Disclaimer: Above post is meant as lighthearted and would never drive like this in the UK.

i don't suffer much from tailgaiting, but do get really angry with people undercutting on the motorway, i tend to just drift over to make them realise what they are doing

what about if theres nothing on the motorway but 3 cars in the middle and right lane doing 60mph... i would definatly undertake them if the wont move for me.

I've always wondered if that counts as undertaking? If you are in lane 1 and approach a slower car in lane 2, do you have to go all the way round them (from lane 1 to lane 3 then back to lane 1), or can you undertake them and stay in lane 1..?

I sometimes enjoy going all the way round them as I'm always reminded of this clip from Frank Skinner on Room 101 where he says he also puts the windscreen washer on full blast as he overtakes them and returns back to the left lane :p

primarily my comment was targeted at those who see the inside lane as a 80mph/90mph lane when everyone in the middle/fast is already at or over the speed limit - it's just stupid

lane discipline is one of the biggest problems i see on the motorway, the changes in the law to combat this were pointless as it isn't enforced - i go past a junction every morning where everyone joining the motorway immediately heads to the middle lane regardless of their own speed or traffic flow - the inside lane is empty for nearly a mile!

using lights/horn is a perfectly good way of getting people to move, why break the law and put yourself at risk?

using lights/horn is begging for someone to stay in the lane and be like hmp... im not moveing for this guy because he flashed me attitude.

i just go left a lane and flaw past them so they know there too slow for the lane. most of the time they move back over after
