Does anyone know if Audi can supply and fit trackers?

Thinking it may help reduce my insurance..

I think I've seen leaflets about fitting a Tracker at my local Audi dealer so I assume that would be happy to fit one. Try giving your local dealer a ring.

Yes - I've had quotes from them in the last six months.

Just remember that there is a yearly sign up fee for a tracker, no good saving £100 if the tracker is costing £70 per year plus the initial buying/installing! If you want 10% off straight away, go with someone like AXA who offer that just for having a dash cam.
Also add someone else on the car that is older, my sister is 4 years older than me and it dropped mine by £30 even though I'm in my 40's...no way she will ever be allowed to drive it though...she'd kill herself lol. Also check added cover if you are renewing, last year my 'upgraded courtesy car' (like for like car if mine was off the road) was £19, this year it's jumped to £60! So I dropped it and will still get a 3 door car if needed as that comes as standard, renewal is now £274, which is less than last year! :)

I'd do a quote first mate, I thought the Find my Audi was effectively a tracker so put it as having one when I did my quote, had to take it off and think it put my insurance up by 20 quid so I'd question whether it's worth it or not.

Ask yourself: If your car was taken and damaged would you want it back fixed, or would you never want to see it again and have a 100% brand new one in its place?

If it's the later then scrap the tracker and buy GAP insurance.

A mate of mine had his Type R stolen years back, it was recovered-fixed-returned to him, but he said it never felt the same again and sold it a few months later.

good point would it be classed as stolen recovered therefore worth less?

Not so much worthless, but you know it's been abused and will constantly be looking for damaged/repaired bits!

If you found out that your wife/girlfriend had been sleeping around behind your back, would you want to go there again?...I wouldn't...and my car means more to me lol :D (Love her really ;))

There are good Tracker deals to be had on eBay, including professional installation.

The question is do you want to pay out for a top of the line monitored one, which will add a few hundred to the cost for the annual monitoring fee, or do you want a £35 special that you can slot a SIM card into and manage yourself?

Also, for what its worth, Audi do actually prewire for Tracker in a lot of their models, however if you go with an independent installer they don't use the prewired position - because everyone knows where they are and the thieves rip the car apart to get to them quickly :racer:

I paid £1045 for Audi to fit the top of the range Cobra Trak 5 to mine. Serious money for a good one :/ Audi charged around £150 more than an outside company, took them 1.5 days as apposed to 2 hours on the driveway. Then you get an Audi Parts warranty, not the tracker company warranty if it went wonky. It's a no brainer to pay the extra and get it fitted by Audi.

Still not sure if I'd want it back if it got nicked, probably not.. would be equally as heartbreaking either way IMO.

On that front, some may ask why I paid it... I question that now too. But, if I changed to an RS3 I'd have one on that too.. it just seems to be the given thing to do and if it did get stolen, never know it might only get taken half a mile down the road and parked up.

I got told that Audi put them in different places, I'm not convinced after having mine fitted.. I was really disappointed when I saw it on the invoice for the installation location. If I ever got one again, is request that it goes somewhere else.

If Audi don't offer to pay the value of the tracker extra when I PX it, they can pull it out of the S3 and fit it in the new car as part of the deal... see how happy they are with that, haha.

Thanks everyone...

I got a quote whilst I was at the dealer for insurance and it was £700 P/A :wtf:

Despite having 10 years no claims...... So I added my mum (who of course will drive the car) and that brought it down to just short of £300.. CRAZY.. I do have a dash cam tho, so thats a good shout. I will hunt around for someone who supports that.

Try AXA mate, they were the cheapest for me by at least £100 and the excess is only £50 compulsory (I added £250 voluntary) so £300 total. Some quotes wanted £500 compulsory!

Go straight to their site though, as via comparison sites they were higher http://www.axa.co.uk/home.aspx

Makes no difference to my insurance. Had the Trackstar Advance installed when I bought the car due to the built in immobiliser (was s******g myself about advance key). Audi offered the Cobra CAT 5 for a similar cost but this didn't have the additional security.

You could, but trackers put your insurance up for some bizzare reason.

EDIT: Wow! You're right.. They're ALOT cheaper! That's impressive.. Thanks for the tip!

What were you quoted on each site, out of interest.

These look like a great idea in principle, but when u dig a little deeper they rely on a mesh of bluetooth networks to be able to send current location. Basically you have to be within Bluetooth range of your car, or someone with Bluetooth turned on and close to your car to trasmit current information. Perfect for lost keys in the house, not so good for a car. Therefore they get very mixed reviews for reliability and accuracy. Which is a real shame as it looks like a nice little device.

If your car has the tech pack and a sim installed you can download the Audi app and one of the features is last stored location. Its not perfect but does offer some functionality. As others have said.

Other options include picking up a cheap Sim deal and buying a cheap device from Ebay and hiding that in the car somewhere. Once again not perfect, but a cheap alternative to hard wired installations and you can manage it yourself with no extra charges other than SIM.

Trackers were one of the original and probably still the best but as others have stated, you have to factor in the purchase and subscription costs, plus would your really want your car back?

There are the opportunist and the professional thieves with cars stolen to order. If the car is stolen and placed straight into a container, you have very little chance of seeing it again. However often they are stolen and parked for a few days in a quiet location on an industrial estate to see if cars have tracking devices. If yours does ( in what ever option you choose/ use) You might be able to get your car back. If its stolen by the other type or used for another job, then you probably wouldnt want to see it.

The whole subject is an interesting area, with lots of different views up for debate. Some people think fitting flame throwers to the side of your car to stop car jacking is a great idea, some think it should be an optional extra/ fitted as standard, most would agree its a step too far, but you get the idea! Whats required to keep insurance premiums down?, How hard do you make your car to steal? How much of a fight does an individual put up if you are woken up in the night or attacked in broad daylight? If you add extra security, OBD, Physical locks ( Steering, etc) and that brings people back into your house etc for a second time, more agitated, is that a good thing or a bad thing??

Each of the above is a personal choice and the tracker option if not an insurance requirement is once again down to an individuals peace of mind.

Put on the car what you feel is right and ofcourse what ever is actually required for your personal situation.

If you have The Tech Pack then there is no reason Audi can't give you the option of finding out where your car is.
All it tells you is where it was last parked , not much use when someone nicks it and it says it's last location was your home.

It seems to be an option for A4 and Q7

AUDI said:
As the owner of an A4 or Q7 with Audi connect, you have access to a number of security-sensitive Audi connect services, such as the ability to view vehicle data and custom settings at home on your computer or away from home via app.

Thanks for the replies. The only reason I started thinking about it was because the S3 is the most expensive car I've ever owned. Plus I think it will be a desirable model here.. I'd not thought of the tech pack tho.. As a IT Geek, with a 3D printer I'm sure I could put something together myself.. Perhaps a Raspberry Pi hidden somewhere with a GPS module..
