I'm away for the weekend with my family and i get a message from my girlfriend that starts 'I'm really really sorry but...' and i knew as soon as read that, she'd damaged the car. We'd argued about who was going to have it for the weekend. I've had it four weeks. Four. I didn't really need it down here but fancied the long drive and a good thrashing in Devon. Everytime I've said be careful of the wheels against the curb she's got really cross about it....Now it's happened.

I took out the alloy insurance which hopefully sorts the alloy. If she's going to do this every four weeks though it won't last. Arghhh. To add insult to injury she's also ******** the tyre. Looks like a good gash in that too. I can't see how bad it is being 200 miles away but the pic doesn't look good. What do you do? Replace tyre if it's really deep and glue it down if it's superficial?

Best example i have right now...

Ouch! Tyre looks like it's come off worse than the wheel in that pic.

Haha thanks guys. Yes i know having your other half drive your pride and joy is not ideal. If it wasn't on street parking I'd buy her a run around. It hurts!! Shouldn't need a new wheel thanks mate. Insurance through Audi should cover repair.

New tyre might be the route. 19". How much are they?

Nightmare!
I have exactly the same worries even although my wife is a good driver.
Hard to tell as you say but the tyre doesn't look too bad(?) I've seen worse.
If it's a gouge the it's also a weakness and I never like taking a chance in case of a blow out.
I assume it's allot and puncture insurance?

Alloy insurance has been awesome for me. Curbed mine and they had to send a Mobile repairer. Asked him if it would look like new and he said no and put a report in that it needs a full refurb. Took it to my choice of repairer, cost me £126 for 19" diamond cut full refurb and got a cheque from the insurance company for £110.

Policy allows me 6 of those per year. I got it chucked in for free, but at £109 for two years I would happily buy it!

Have heard others have been told their policy doesn't cover diamond cut and consequently got the premium for the insurance refunded, so worth checking.

Yeah, my policy on the S5 excluded diamond cut but I also got it free and never needed it so didn't bother.
Need it double check the wording on the S3 policy though.

Well I would be gutted if my cover didn't include my alloys. The dealer knew what i was buying so they should know the details. If i get 6 per year that should cover my girl friend. Or should that read 'ex girlfriend's

Last new car we had the Mrs done the alloys within 15 mins of picking the car up, she was adamant she hadn't.

Funny how it's always the Wife/Girl friend who 'kerbs' the alloys.

Perhaps you should have specified the Auto parking option!

Why do they even get that close to the kerb in the first place if they don't know how wide the car is? God that is infuriating. :rage:

I'm not sure that scratch is worth a whole thread, get if fixed on the insurance.

She's had it parked up against the kerb about five times already. Every time i point out how close it is and it's only a matter of time before it's scuffed.

@TYb - good input

Alright money bags. You're right, of course but after four weeks I'm sure if the shoe was on the other foot you'd feel the same. Scratched wheel and new tyre...Deep joy!

Well, you don't have to read it...

@thealphabeta If you suspect this lack of spatial awareness might not improve, you may want to invest in some Alloygators. The latest ones are redesigned with locking clips for better security, as the originals when clouted could make a desperate bid for freedom, taking wheel arch paint with them. They're often advertised in any number of vile, garish, look-at-me-aren't-I-just-sooooo-original colours, but they also have silver.

They do work a much better if you don't do what I've done with them, which was buy them, throw them in a cupboard out of the way, and forget about them for four months.. Guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend now.

Ah ha. That's interesting thank you. I hadn't considered that. I might give that a shot. Do they tend to colour match or could you get away with black ones on my alloys and then it blends with the tyre?

You're right I would, re the wheel as you have the insurance I just meant claim and get it sorted. Re the tyre I'm not sure that needs replacing.

Sorry for any offence caused. Might be cheaper to get a new girlfriend than repair alloys monthly...

I've really no idea. Judging by the set I have, I'd say they they were a perfect colour match for a set of Crank Brothers 650b Cobalt 3 mountain bike rims, but I don't think that's much help...

I've seen sets on S3 rims on the web though, silver looked ok, grey fitted quite nicely, but I thought black made the tyre look like a deeper profile and the wheel look smaller.

Maybe they should just make curbs out of rubber, that way you'd end up with a rubber mark that you could remove, hmmm I'm off to Dragon's Den…

forget the alloygators - they are not suitable for diamond cut alloys. Ruined my S3 wheels before i discovered that. had to get them refurbished as they scored the full rim....:(

Ouch. Wheel doesn't look too bad thankfully - not sure on the tyre - depends on the depth of the cut - if in doubt replace it.

If you need a new tyre try mytyres or tyreleader- both are German tyre wholesalers and even with a £5 delivery charge for just buying one tyre they were much cheaper for me last month when I had a non-repairable puncture on my 3 month old tyre (Grrr!)

You're onto something Tom, remember the old diving blocks we used to train with in the swimming pool as kids? That type of rubber would work!

Always a danger with any finish, it's a plastic strip in close proximity to something you want to keep looking shiny that has the ability to capture grit and other rubbish. Fill the gap with something suitably sticky and water repellent and it won't be an issue.

If you have someone driving your car who simply cannot stay away from kerbs, then paying for a handful of replacement alloygators at £12 a go over the course of ownership and then maybe paying once to refinish a set of wheels after a few years is still far cheaper than remachining them twice in quick succession, and then having to replace the wheels entirely or live with wheels that look completely wrecked because there's no material left to machine back.
