Anyone running an aftermarket panel filter? I'm not expecting any porformance hike but a bit more induction noise would nice.....

Cheap/simple upgrade or waste of time?

Cheers
Jon

I am running an aFe Pro Dry S filter with the baffle/"snow grate" removed...Unlike when I made the same change to my prior Golf R I can detect next to no difference in sound. I think it's because of the different routing of the inlet on the S3 compared to the R (and particularly the FL 8V since the plate at the top of the grille can't be removed without pulling the bumper cover).

Was sorta expecting that, but hoping not.

Cheers for reply

I sense some irony?

Not at all. Filter is one of the first mods I do on any car for a bit deeper sound and always think the S3 badly needs it as it seems to be very quiet from stock. Just something, anything to make it that bit more shouty.

It tends to be the box the filter is in that silences it.. i'm running a pipercross induction kit at the moment and its immense! The noise it makes it wicked if you're after that sort of thing! A cheaper alternative may be seeing if you can get a cone filter to bolt on to your current set up, without the "lid" of the air filter on as such.. allowing more air and noise in and out of the box.

Just to add to that a bit in more depth about the pipercross.. the waste noise is literally the same as a dump valve.. and the intake spool noise is amazing.. definitely worth the £300 at the bottom of the price range for S3 kits..

Am running a PiperCross Panel Filter and the moment, the PP1895. Have noticed no noise difference between this and the stock filter however my throttle response did improve a little.

Any quick vids to demo noise?

Cheers, but don't want to mod too much due to warranty / PCP etc.

Looks good bit of kit though ta

I went for a Ramair foam panel and removed the snow grate first, no big difference but yes the induction noise was a tad more noticeable, not overtly.
Next I changed the GFB DV+, that sharpened things up throttle wise and you get a tiny bit of blow off whoosh.
Then it was the CTS throttle pipe and ECS silicone induction, foot down there is a glut more sound and a little bit more urgency.
As a 1.8T with Bluefin, that is all the engine power mods for me.
Going bit by bit you will notice what gains each part gives.

Have heard bad things about foam panels coming apart over time (specifically VWR) so I'd never risk running one of those...

Yes I have heard stuff before, but I check my filter every 5000Km at every oil change, it's just like how you hear lots of stories on oiled cotton filters clogging MAP sensors.
I am of the type that I have made my own recognized decision and I will bear my own consequences.
Thx............

I've never once heard of oiled filters messing with MAP sensors. MAF sensors, yes, but those are totally different.

i have mods my 1.8T same as your 1.8T but my panel filter is aFe dry pro filter and got extra panel filter from Revo as well, using jb4 box for more power.

Ive been trying to decide on a panel filter for my s3, searching the market the pipercross seems like the best value for money at £38.

Im just trying to decide whether another £30 is justified for the other foam filters (revo...vwr) or the mesh type K & N.

first thing I did when I got mine, removed the snow grate and fitted an ITG panel filter.

makes a noticeable difference in noise, and bum dyno reported more responsive throttle.. well worth doing iMHO..

also I have a ITG panel spare for £30 if anyones interested?

It's not brand new it has approx 450miles on it, it's foam and perfectly clean, perfect and cost me £70 from merlinmotorsport.

Hence £30
