Hi - A friend has a 64 plate A6 3.0 V6 Bi-turbo with the factory fit Sound Generator. I like the idea of this but having contacted Audi direct, they are unable to retro-fit this to my car (A7 3.0 V6 272 BHP black Edition). Does anyone know whether this can be done? I know I have an A7 but I believe it has the same A6 chasis etc so this forum might be more looked at the the A7 one? Sorry if it's in the wrong place.

It can be done but expect to pay £££££'s

You'd need a 2nd hand system off a BiTDI and the loom etc to go with it

In all honesty you might be better off getting an aftermarket exhaust if you are after sound

I'd like a bit more sound out of my own. For a V6 its too quiet :(

Ive got it on my 3.0 TDI... you can buy it now around 800 euros retrofit here in Holland...

Not quite sure why Audi told you it's not available as you can purchase the system as a genuine accessory. Don't expect any change from £1500 and there's fitting on top if you can't DIY.

Second hand BiTDI would be a lot cheaper if it's OK with the single turbo 3.0.

I've found somewhere that will fit the full system the same as a factory fit for £1400. Trying to decide if it's worth the costs depending on how long I plan on keeping the car.

Having the biTDI I must admit I do love the sound whether generated or not it's lovely, the Fiesta had a sound generator in the dash area and didn't sound anywhere near as good and meaty as this inside the car and obviously just sounded like a rattly 3 pot on the outside, where the biTDI also sound great on the outside.

You can then if you want get a sound booster which apart from amplifying the sound lets you configure how the car sounds at idle and different revs which is interesting but not something I think I'll go for as it's more than loud enough for normal driving when in dynamic. Wonder now if you can configure pops in it on deaceleration haha.

Anyway for £1400 I'd probably consider it but honestly consider it hard.

Also the only real time time you know it's faked is as the driver as when you floor it the noise ramps up quicker than the turbo spools sometimes so you get a slight moment of noise and no actual increase in progress, which gives your passengers a slight warning that they are about to be pinned to the chair lol.

I've had a BiTDI a's a courtesy car when my 245 3.0 has been in for a service at Audi. The exhaust note was stunning inside the cabin and I would love to have it fitted but £1400 for just a bit of noise is a lot of cash. £3-4k extra would probably get you a BiTDI with all the extra benefits anyway if you could do a decent deal.

I think for that money I'd be looking aftermarket for less money e.g. Milltek.

Eh? Is this a similar sound generator as found on the 3.2 VR6 engines in the TT etc? If so then the sound generator is basically a rubber cone filled with foam that is placed in the air intake. A separate hose feeds the sound directly in to the cabin. Easy cheap retrofit provided you can obtain the part.

Nope. This is an active exhaust system and sound generator

It's good especially with the kufatec but fir £1400 I think you'll be left with the nagging thought " £1400 I'm not sure it was worth it"!

Lol yes - I am interested to know exactly what is inside those dome bits though. I am wondering how hard it would be to make one.

Got to admit, after living with a kufatec sound booster for almost a year, the noise is amusing, but a bit synthetic. The amount of people that asks me what's under the bonnet though! :D

Don't think the neighbours like me, I live at the end of a quiet road, so I usually switch it off before I go down my road.

These guys here offer an aftermarket kit.

I like the sound of my V8 as is, although if you have turbo chargers fitted, it does deaden the raw V8 sound quite significantly :racer:

Not sure if your still resident in Ecosse but if you are one day we possibly could try meet up and compare notes and cars. :)

It is an unusual sound rather than enjoyable.

V6 trying to mimic a V8 but still diesel sounding.

To someone who's only ever had diesel cars it might sound interesting.

The thing is V8's can sound very different depending on the car and manufacturer. My favourite is the Bentley V8's they have in their GT3 cars

Although i understand the need for V10 or V12s raw shouting I agree that the V8 has a much more pleasing pur and growl to them and the actuator does a good job of getting close to that greatly improving great diesel engines.

Everyone who's been in my car (its debadged) has believed its a petrol and most a v8.

V10 or 12 are much smoother sounding.

I cannot believe the bitdi is anywhere close to sounding like anything other than a more interesting diesel sound which is what confuses people.

When you get the bitdi into higher revs it sounds more mechanical (because it is) like a v6 and the V8 burble is gone as that's just a trick with exhaust pressure.

Save your money, and have the car use more of the higher revs to make it sound better. Is my advice.

The problem is the limit of what the speaker within the backboxes can produce. With the kufatec module, it turns the volume to max at low revs, and obviously as it goes up the Rev range, it can't get any louder than what is already maxed out. How often do you Rev the tits off your bitdi? Lol. It has so much torque, mine rarely goes past 3k revs.

I can see what you mean woolly, the actuator won't perfectly emulate a V8 but the only time it does sound obviously fake is less at high revs but more when you have your foot to the floor in low revs as it makes too much noise for the first second before the turbo and torque kicks in.

Jojo has hit the nail on the head, in the biTDI you press the accelerator half way down and you get a lovelly V8 burble all the way to red line and so much torque that even with on motorway slip road sprints there's hardly a reason to floor it.

I like the sound and the sound booster might still be an option to control it a bit further.

Yup, rarely rev it out unless manual.

was talking to OP in terms of his non bitdi. It's basically the same engine with single turbo. So high revs is where the mechanical sound comes out more and similar to bitdi.

From memory, the burble noise is best between 2k and 3k revs.

Ah right yeah, I think I mentioned before I would have had to think long and hard whether I would pay the probable 2k total cost to get it all fitted aftermarket if I didn't already have it. It was the biTDI's twin turbo ease of speed and massive torque (and the looks) that sold me the car, the sound was just a very welcomed addition.

Yeour right 2k -3k is the sweetspot, or if your in a high gear on the motorway at say 70mph and you accelerate moderately lightly (so it doesn't drop down) it makes a very pleasing burble as it still effortlessly builds speed. As these sort of cars are going to spend most of their lives at high speeds on motorways I'd say it would probably be worth the money now for that more pleasing sound track.
