ok getting round to all of the annoying issues with my 2011 A3 S Line 2.0 TDI.
Rear Wiper motor replaced
Wheel arch liners replaced (were smashed)
Floor covers replaced (again missing/broken)
New tyres all round

Now my attention has turned to the fact that my start/Stop never comes on (never has from the dealer-Arnold Clark (say no more!!)

I've tried it with no radio, no Fan etc and no DRL (so no power drain) to see if it makes a difference (with car up to temp) but all I get is the A with a score through it on the dash. I have the start/stop override button on the dash so I do have it. Until I can have it scanned is there anything I should be checking?
Anything common or obvious?

try setting the heating to auto , not to the windscreen or it wont work ,or mine doesn't . no heated rear window . and theres a possibility if everything else is ok that its been disable with vcds . but get the car scanned for faults to rule out anything else .

I had this issue and it will be an issue with power being used over what is expected once car is locked.

When you first lock your car look at your hazard triangle light. It should illuminate red. It is analysing power consumption to decide what systems to shut down ( it's intelligent ) and if locked while your say on holiday it monitors battery and keeps closing down systems to preserve battery. Anyway that light should go off after about 1 minute showing power consumption is normal which I think is 0.4 amp or less (from memory). If it stays on your drawing over 0.4 while cars shutdown and will also be using more than expected while cars running which will stop the stop/start system working.

Mine turned out to be my dash cam system as it was hard wired into a permanent live which was enough to knock it over 0.4. Changed wiring to live on ignition and worked immediately. Now have a tracker fitted and luckily doesn't affect it.

Previous owner may have coded it out with VCDS. Some do it as its annoying to have to keep turning it off.

If it's been coded off it wouldn't show on the dash? Would it?

I know it's not coded off as it's done it like 4 times in 2 years of ownership so I know it's on just don't know why it doesn't turn off.....always thought it was due to having the fan on the lowest setting (one small rectangle on the dash) but tried different things being off and doesn't seem to make a difference.

If you have the fan on does your start stop still work?

I honestly have no idea. I have the same car as you but a 2012 and mine is always stop starting. First thing I would do is get the battery checked as it is no doubt 6 years old. I know part of the stop start monitors the battery power / drain and will keep the car running if it detects the battery is loosing power.

I know that the various sensors around the car have to be satisfied for it to kick in and yours does seem to be faulty. However look on the bright side. It doesn't really save you any fuel and you will have less wear and tear on your starter motor !

Mines works with fan on and even with a\c on.

Second what Igooch said.

The start/stop system is pretty intelligent, and if it doesn't think the battery is capable of supporting whatever you have running, it wont go into start/stop mode.:racer:

If i remember right, for the start stop to work properly it has to fulfill quite alot of conditions I've got a 2011 2.0 TDI Sline 140 (standard everything) from Arnold shark and my start stop is fussy as **** so i read the book and it gave of a whole list of situations it wont work in, BUT mine is a manual activation, I have to press the button before it will turn on and work (not sure if thats how it's meant to be)

page 93-95 in the book says :

Drivers door must be closed
drivers seatbelt must be fitted
bonnet is closed
must have moved over 4km since the last stop
not no trailer fitted
Engine is not warm
Interior tempterature selected on the aircon has not been reached (bit daft IMHO)
it's to cold or hot outside
windscreen is being defrosted
parking aid/assist is activated
battery charge is low
steering wheel to close to full lock
reverse gear has just been selected
the vehicle is on a steep gradiant

But it does say that if there is to much power being used or the battery charge is to low that the start stop will automatically stop working.

I didnt know it was a smart system, Im bad for forgetting to turn my lights of at night and when i walk out in the morn and curse thinking it wont start, but it allways does! Thinking it was just a good battery but Thats a really usefull peice of info!

Mine does the same, its only worked twice since I bought the car and when it did work after the restart it showed a fault in my ABS but theres no fault on VCDS. I got a 2010 2.0 TDi S Line 140. I'm not bothered that it doesn't work as I don't like it anyway.
