Hey everyone,

I'm currently trying to remove the turbo in my S3. I've got a decent amount of things removed, like the driveshaft, the down-pipe disconnected, the TIP and intercooler piping removed etc. The guide I'm following is for an Audi TT 180 so there are a couple things that are different, and the guy that made the guide was swapping out his turbo.

Is it possible to take the turbo out with the coolant and oil lines still attached or does the manifold have to be removed? The manifold is supposed to be a real pain so if it's possible without taking it off I'd love to know how.

Thanks.

Yeah, I've most of those things done but how to do you undo the oil & coolant supply pipes without taking the manifold off or can you leave them attached as you take the turbo out and disconnect them then?

its been a while since I done one so don't recall the particulars but once the turbo is free of the downpipe and the support bracket (you may have to bend it out the way a bit) then it should push down a bit to allow you to get an 8mm allen key on them...

Don't forget to replace all the banjo washers

Alright will give it a go.

Thank you very much Tuffty

The guide Tuffty provided states this.

- Unbolt turbocharger from exhaust manifold -arrows-.
– Remove gasket between turbocharger and exhaust manifold and tilt turbocharger slightly away from engine.

– Disconnect oil supply pipe -2- from turbocharger using an 8 mm hexagon socket wrench with ball joint.

– Remove bolt -arrow- on bracket for turbocharger.
– Lower out turbocharger with coolant supply pipe connected.

Yeah, that worked just fine. Thanks again Tuffty.

My bad Stuart, just a little bit of confusion because the manifold is gone in the second picture and the guide I was following before had the manifold off. I'm sorry if that really upset you.

Actually - I am really upset ! I'm a delicate flower.

Well I don't see why you had to reply unless it upset you so I just wanted to ensure I apologised because I wouldn't want to hurt your feelings. :) can we be fwends again?

I'm not actually sure what made you think you had upset me in the first place? you asked if you could remove the turbo with the coolant pipe still attached ad I showed you what the instructions were about that. It didn't upset me I was happy for you!

Personally, if I ever have to do remove the turbo (as stated in other threads) I would whip the head off and see everything from above - instead of all that mucking about laying under the car, hitting my nose on the sub frame then banging my head on the path and kneeling on pebbles for hours on end reaching through the wheel arches.
