I sent the wife's A3 in for an oil service to a very good indi who I've used before, and was reasonable with his prices. He just rang up saying the service will come to over a thousand pound. :puke2:

I said why and he said one of the rear shocks is leaking and so is one of the radiators. Apparently the A3 has two front radiators, one behind the other??

Anyway, I said no thanks in the politest way possible and said I'll do it myself.

How difficult is it to change the radiator? I always service my own cars but thought since the wife's car is quite new I'll get it serviced by someone else(against my will) so that she's got a service book full of stamps for when we come to sell it.

When i did mine i disconnected the air con pipe and removed it from the bottom. Local garage re-gassed it for £25

Just had my main rad replaced and they were unwilling to change it without taking the front bumper and front off. I think the problem was the potential to damage the condenser and other parts while trying to move the rad down and out. Anyway, new rad and fitting was £354 inc which I have to say I was very pleased about as I thought it would be double that for the amount of work but it appears that the front end comes off very easy.
Hope you manage to get yours sorted ok

I followed a thread that said you had to take the front bumper off, only to find it of no use.
Maybe i missed something!!

ahtcap,
I'm confused, did you mean me in post 5 above ? This is what I said on the other thread so not sure who thought taking the bumber off was of no use. Might have been cheaper if they could avoid it but as said in post 4 it seemed a fair price for the work.

'Second the rad as just had to have a new one fitted to my 54 a3 SB as the collar had cracked where the bottom right hand hose actually goes into the rad. Might be worth a look although if it was leaking would it not be overheating as well? if it is that and to give you an idea mine cost £348 inc to supply and fit a new rad at an Indy rather than main dealer. Hope you manage to get it sorted.'

£1000 for a service a shocker and a rad . send it my way if youre willing to pay that , il even chuck in a 2 stage machine polish lol.

I was replying to MFM question of how difficult it was to change the Radiator.I had my radiator changed 2 months ago, after asking the same question on here.I was given a thread that showed the bumper had to come off. After removing the bumper and crash bar i could see no way to remove the radiator,so it was put back together and the air con pipe was removed allowing the radiator to almost fall out.

Sorry for the late reply, been away.

The car is a 2011 1.4 TFSI. I also saw somewhere that the front bumper had to come off. Looking under the bonnet though, it doesn't seem there is any space to get it out without removing the bumper, but as ahtcap says, removing the bumper was of no use?

ahtcap, what year model is yours?
