Hi, I used to be on here a lot when we had our S3 but due to a growing family we moved to a BMW estate and then to an X5.

We may go slightly smaller and back to petrol due to the wife not doing many miles.

We were thinking of something like a Q5 or A4 avant 2.0 tfsi or even a S4 avant, all around 09-13 etc.

As I have been out the loop for a while just wondered what the reliability is like on the above especially the S4 if we got an auto.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Test drive first, i had a brand new A4 loan car the other week and it had this new servo motor assisted steering for self parking. ****** awful IMHO. Every undulation in the road had it trying to steer to compensate and me trying to steer back to compensate the compensate. down some of the lanes round my way i was fighting to keep it on the road at anything over 50mph..I expect you could get used to it but after normal steering i hated it.

Thanks for your reply, a guy at work has an A4 and I had a quick look at that, I forgot how low the seating position is on these cars compared to my X5 and VW T5.

My sister in law has an SQ5 but in all honesty if we stay with BMW an X3 35d is similar size, same performance with probably better handling also.

Unfortunately excessive oil consumption plagues the 2.0TFSI for the A4, A5 and Q5. I know it affects the B8 A5 (2007-2011), but not sure on the affected years for the A4 or Q5. Quick search will get you an answer.

I have moved from a 2.0TFSI A5 B8 (2009) to a S5 B8.5 (2015) and couldn't be happier. As above, if your budget can stretch it I would try for a B8.5 S4 as gearbox is likely to be more reliable.
