Heat shield rattle (I think)

Hi all,

My recently purchased 59 plate 3.0t fsi avant has started to rattle when I come off the throttle. Sounds as though it is under the transmission tunnel, so guessing it's the heat shield.

Doesn't make any noise under load, so not massively worried that it's something else, but just wondered if anyone had encountered similar?

It's going in to the garage for some exploratory work next week but would be great to know if anyone has any 'don't bother it will take 6 hours labour' stories before I do!

The nut that holds the heat shield tends to corrode the heat shield, best to buy a bit of used heat shield and make some washers big enough to cover the hole in the existing heat shield.

i know its a different model, but we had a similer rattle off throttle that turned out to be a heatshield that was near the steering rack. wasnt damaged at all, just for some reason slightly too close, and vibrated at certain revs. we found it ourselves with a rubber mallet (for camping lol), giving everything a tap until we heard the rattle, a slight bend upwards and it curred the vibration

Seems strange that it only rattles when off throttle.
One of my old car's knocked when off throttle. I traced it to the front wheel nuts where all loose. It had been in for a service. Better give em a quick check.

Quick update on this. It's been into the garage for some poking and prodding today. It's not the exhaust flexi and it's not the heatshield. They are pretty sure it's the gearbox which is obviously not the best news.

It's booked in to see a gearbox specialist for some diagnostic work on Thursday, but having described the noise/symptom to them, they said they've not had anything similar so it's a bit of a mystery.

Fingers crossed it's not a rebuild job and the gearbox just needs a service.

So after much investigation by both a garage and gearbox specialist, it turns out I've got a broken gearbox mount. Totally sheared off.

The good news is that I haven't got to fork out for new/reconditioned box, but the thing I'm not sure on is that I've been quoted quite different prices.

The gearbox specialist is quoting £338 + vat for the mount, the garage are quoting £96 + vat. So something is awry.

AFAIK there is only one part but could anyone shed any light on this? Or could it just be gearbox specialist trying it on?

Thought I'd update this quickly. This car has cost me a small fortune now, but finally getting there.
Turned out that it was not the mount but the cradle that was cracked and the good news is that the rattle has been cured.

In conjunction with this, the car was also consuming an enormous amount of oil - as in a litre every few hundred miles.

Turns out the PCV valve was completely shot and was spewing oil all over the v of the cylinder bank and was actually pooling. So, new PCV, new thermostat and all seems to be well which is great because if it was piston rings then the car was basically a very expensive paper weight.

Car now running perfectly again so once I've recovered from the recent bills, I can look at tweaking a few other bits - brakes, exhaust and a few cosmetic repairs etc.

Gave it a wash today and immediately wishing I hadn't as the whole car really needs some tlc on the paintwork. Full machine polish required but gonna make sure it's running properly for a few hundred miles first! Seems to be a happy car again though.

Aventurin blue is a strange colour, I reckon with a bit of time it could look really nice, but it will definitely take some elbow grease.
