Benjie’s “My S4 gearbox is fine,” thread… Spoiler Alert – it’s not.

Hi Dippy

Good info thank you.
If you had a late 2009 car like me, would change the s-Tron fluid a lot say every 5k?

Dippy and Razza,

Would you think re-map's are contributing factors to these gearboxes blowing up?

OH DEAR.. OH DEAR.. OH DCT

So having bought my 55k 2009 s4, worried about the gearbox having read this thread...

I decided to take it to a good mates garage (quite a place). He plugged it into £10k Snap on machine. Following fault codes, the Gearbox being the worrying one. We subsequently cleared the fault code on the gearbox, went for a spirited drive and they didn't come back when we plugged it back in.

But clearly worrying..... Any thoughts guys? I should add the gearbox seems fine to drive. I think so anyway, (I have only owned old fashioned auto's previous).

Razza, you know your stuff!
There was a date stamp, it said 2000, so that wasn't very helpful I'm afraid. Perhaps you need an Audi computer for that one.
I have a stamped service book and that's it. I rang Audi previously and asked if there were any software updates for the s-tron and they said 'no'. Perhaps I should call them....
I was a little consoled by the fact the fault code didn't return. My previous experience of fault codes is that they re-appear fairly quick.
hmm what to do now....

Ask them for the full service history. There are updates for the box, it's usually the first thing they try after an oil change if you experience any issues...
My 59 plate was several versions out of date....

Spoken to both Audi garages, neither did any gearbox work. They also insist there aren't any software updates....

So whose the best specialists?

There are two types of software update - ones which are always applied and ones which are only applied in the event of a specific malfunction or customer complaint. However in addition to this dealers know about DL501 issues and so tend to be rather guarded about what they tell you.

BTW even though there was no requirement to change the filters on a 2009 DL501, that doesn't mean that its not worth doing. Dealers won't do it because "its not required" so it would need to be done by an indie.

Dippy,
Thanks for that.
Do you know any Indy's who are good on these boxes... maintance/repair/knowledge etc,.

Razza,

Your knowledge is always very decent on B8 S4's

I want a remap that a)doesn't kill my gearbox b)doesn't kill my fuel {95ron?} c)doesn't cost a fortune, stage 1 only

Where should I go?

so I'm just reading up on this, i have a late 2012 car and I've been looking at my service book and the car was bought from swindon audi, the car had its s ironic oil and filter done at 17k on its first service its had a further 2 services done at glasgow audi 44k, and 66k however the s ironic box was not done. i have no issues with the box and it runs smooth and changes gears with no jerkyness at all in fact you wouldn't even know its changed gear unless you looked at the dis. I've spoke to the pre owner and he said he just put it in for the service and picked the car up does not recall being told about the gear box..i called glasgow audi they state the mentioned it at 44k but the owner never requested it...cant get my head around that as the jobs only £200 the owner had no finance on the car and was paying £400 for the service with the intention of keeping the car so with a job like this you would get it done ( sadly the owner is not a enthusiast ) audi say they never mentioned it at 66k as the mechanic would have assumed the s ironic had been done. the cars now on 71k and its booked in to get the oil and filter and the rear diff ( for peace of mind ) done. i am mr paranoid now after reading the internet however as the box feels fine and the fact I'm only 15 k over when it should have been done i feel i should be ok.

however i see the issues affect all ages of b8 and b8.5 and mileage as I've seen 2010 models have issues at 34k miles.

Remap wise, don't know. I had MRC Stage 2+ on it and it was unbelievably quick.

As for discostu49, even 1000 miles over when it should be done will mean audi will wash their hands come any issues, plus a warranty won't help either.
Best thing you're doing is change it now.

(a) The basic truth is that increased torque coupled with a likely change in use of that torque is going to increase stress on the transmission and statistically reduce its longevity. There is insufficient data to draw any conclusions, however it would appear that DL501 problems are more related to design issues than actual stress. The fact that there have been two design revisions of the DL501 and several TSBs indicates that there clearly are 'known' issues with the first ones. However problems are not guaranteed. There are owners of pre-2011 cars who have not had gearbox issues. But the bottom line is that if you have an early gearbox and don't want to take chances with it, then don't tune the car.
(b) The ECU will ****** to take account of lower octane fuel. IIRC the early B8s were optimised for 98RON so if you have been using 95RON then that's exactly what the ECU will have been doing. Even with a remap the ECU still can ****** for 95RON, however there may be an advantage to having the remap optimised for this. You'd need to go to a tuner who develops their own maps (i.e. not a 'distributor' who uses off-the-shelf tunes from the likes of APR and REVO). I know that MRC have direct experience of tuning for 95RON.

What's the point of tuning for 95ron, you're leaving a lot of horsepower behind not using premium fuel.

Well transmission shunt is probably the least of the issues that can affect the DL501 but if its a problem to you then I'm sure the 034 solution will improve it.
