I do seem to come across these odd situations with this race car and this is a classic, even for me. So I've never run the car in 4x4 trim for various reasons and now I want to. No worry's Ill refit it all he says. Its an easy job.

Famous last words

So I do and the damn downpipe touches the top of the propshaft metal doughnut housing. WTF

Much scratching of head, measuring and coffee later and it's still touching it. So I check my downpipe and its a Milltek that should fit the AWD car (so I'm told) The turbo is fixed so I cant move that up down or left or right either, the transfer box is fixed solid so I cant move that either so it has to be the downpipe is the wrong shape. Now this is where it gets interesting.

This is my downpipe:

SSXAU284

And here it is:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Milltek-A...823643?hash=item465a027e9b:g:B-oAAOSwnHZYRXMO

I then found this one:

Now can you see the kink in the second one? Where that kink is, is where it touches the prop on my straight Milltek. So I'm assuming the kink part will now miss it by about 10mm maybe more as it will sort of go up and over it.

Anyway ive bought the German one so will see when it arrives if I'm right. I hope I am and then ill sell my Milltek on here :) I do find it most odd though that all the other ones I've looked at seem to show a straight section there apart from that German one ive just bought.

Cheers
Mark.

ha ha lets hope so, not got it yet. lets wait and see. Ill take pictures of both so you can see what I mean.

I bought a 10mm thick downpipe flange and used it as a spacer on my last milltek downpipe made it clear by about 4-5mm also gave it a little tap with a hammer to put a slight dent in it gave me around 7-8mm clearance, decided to sell the car stripped it , then decided to keep it bought another german downpipe off ebay it fit perfect with around 12-15mm clearance round the donut, good old germans

Snap I also bought that 10mm flange in stainless as that was one of the ideas I came up with after my third coffee. There is tons of space on the other side of the downpipe to the bulkhead. But then I found this kinked downpipe in Germany so wanted to give that a try as I do like things to be correct on the race car.

Don't you find it odd Milltek are making downpipes that essentially don't fit the quattro? Has no one noticed this before now?

They make k04 and k03 downpipes for fwd (ed30, cupra) and awd (s3, golf r)?

Yes

But I was told this SSXAU284 is for AWD and yet it clearly don't fit. At least on my car anyways and also it seems on S3Daves too.

Well when it's milltek i don't have anything good to say about their quality and fitment. Their fitment is a mess even with the correct downpipe, bad mounts that easily break, cracking welds...

Heard nothing but thing about milltek downpipes either touching or being mm's off the donut, i wouldnt go milltek again even my catback didnt fit properly, ive gone over to a cobra non res cat back and a german companys downpipe/ decat, all fits perfect now

I bought the APR downpipe as there are differences between the pipe sold for fwd and 4wd cars

So I wasn't going mad then :) Hopefully this German pipe will arrive before the weekend as I want to get the prop back on.

Milltek are now doing cast downpipes for the S3 8P now and so maybe they have modified to stop the fouling.

Trouble is all the cast ones I looked at still look straight to me on that section.

That was quick!

Your dpd order will be delivered today by Kevin, your DPD driver, between 10:35 and 11:35

Ill take some side by side pics with the Milltek and post em up and also of some of it fitted too..

Dont trust a word they say 'John' was supposed to deliver my last parcel, turned up and he was called Michael... and people wonder why i have trust issues

Hi Guys

So Kevin turned up and this is what I now have.

So noticibly different as you can see and a nice kink in it. I makred in a cross on the milltek where the prop fouls.

This shows how much the kink should allow the prop to miss by now

All wrapped up ready for fitting

So I dry fitted it all and it fits so much better. I now have about a 4cm gap from the top of the prop doughnut to the downpipe where the kink is. Plenty of space and it doesnt foul anywhere. All in all im very happy with it.

It's finding the time to get the car over to someone for them to make a custom system. As it is my system is pretty custom and basic as it is.

Downpipe 3 inch to Flowmaster box to side exit

It's short and relativly strait with only one bend in it for the side exit.

However with the prop on my flowmaster now don't fit in the centre tunnel so it all needs re working some. Ah the joys of custom.
