Audi A6 Avant 2010 LeMans.

Dash fault "auto lights/wipers defective". Started as intermittent. Now more regular although it does disappear sometimes and the auto lights/wipers work as expected.

Whilst the fault is present I also get a "Wipers defective" error and the manual wipers fail to work, which is very annoying. As soon as the fault clears itself the manual wipers work fine too.

Scan shows no communication to the sensor.
Once cleared the wipers work fine with ignition on, but as soon as the car is started the auto lights/wipers fault returns and the manual wipers stop working too.

Is there any way I can make the manual wipers work until this gets fixed?

I can live without the auto wipers/lights but having the manual wipers fail is a real pain!

I'm assuming the sensor has failed. Need sensor and I believe a Gel pack to attach it.

Can anyone advise, give me the part numbers to order and possibly a step-by-step of replacing.
Also an approx cost of having it done by Audi or a specialist and maybe a recommendation for a specialist around Lancaster area who could have a look at this for me.

I've removed the upper plastic cover leading up from the mirror to expose the wires, plug looks securely located. Is there anything else I can check before replacing the sensor.

Would a replacement windscreen come with the sensor. I've never claimed on my insurance and as the original screen has quite a few chips in it I'm wondering if I could get it replaced.

Thanks
Martin.

Hi I had the same problem with my 2009 avant. In the end the problem was corroded wiring under the passenger carpet due to a leak from the plenum chamber casing under the bonnet.

Thanks.
I'd better get it checked by auto electrician in that case before I replace sensor. How did they diagnose it ?

I had water in the passenger foot wells after a heavy night of rain. I took it to a local independent specialist who hooked it up to vag-com and found some of the modules were not communicating with each other. It had nothing to do with the auto sensor in the window.

Scan done today - see attached image.
Shows intermittent fault with communication to the Rain/Light Sensor

Unfortunately the sensor was working fine ALL ****** day whilst it was at the garage. Typical !

We suspect the sensor is playing up.
Can anyone advise part No to order, do I also need a gel pack to refit the sensor ?

Thanks

In other cars, the sensor clips into a holder which is bonded to the screen, but looking at the parts list for the A6 it isn't clear.
I think that you would either need to unclip the cover and see if the sensor is clipped into a holder or alternatively ask a windscreen fitter, hopefully they would be able to check for you.

It was the sensor which was acting erratically.
A new sensor was bought through the parts request here and as luck would have it the car showed the error when dropped off at the garage. We switched it off, did a quick swap of the sensor without fitting it properly, started the car and the fault was gone.

Note that the part which came off the car has been superceeded by Audi

Existing Part No: 8K0 955 559 A
Replacement Part No: 8K0 955 559 D

There seems to have been a design change with the part.
The existing one has a lip around the outside and a sticky gel insert which sits inside the lip, flush with it and bonds to the screen. The replacement part has a flat surface and appears to have adhesive on. We tried with the additional sticky pad sent and this made it too fat and the mirror wouldn't sit on properly.

The rain sensors work fine now without calibration. However the light sensor always wants the headlights on (not just the DRL, the full dipped lights).

Can anyone point me in the right direction to re-calibrate this in VCDS please.

Thanks.
