Evening all.

Does anyone here have a unit that they could recommend as being suitable for use in a domestic garage? I'm not looking for anything industrial grade, or something designed to cope with a warehouse...I just need something reliable to keep a typical double-garage dry over a typical Yorkshire winter.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

I've got an Ebac, bought from their factory shop in West Auckland, County Durham, been running no problem since 2001. Cost about £200 from memory.

Just checked out their website and they've moved to Newton Aycliffe (still in Durham) and they appear to be one of those rare things these days - someone who actually manufactures its products in the UK!

Yeah, I've seen the Ebac stuff on their website - they make a big thing about the fact that they're made in the UK and therefore better suited to the UK climate. Sounds like yours has done you good service...what model do you have? I had also been looking at the Meaco DD8L Zambezi which is a desiccant (rather than the more traditional compressor) type, which I understand would be better suited to the lower temperatures in the garage.

I've had a Meaco for approx 3 years in the garage (single prefeb) and it's been great - puts some warm air back into the garage and i use the constant drain hose on the back leading to the outside so i don't have to empty the tray

It was bought when i had motorbikes and kept the moisture off them through the winter during storage, also helps when the car has been washed as it helps dry it overnight :)

Can just see it in the pic below to the right (it's facing backwards to face the warm air into the centre of the garage and the hose is leading to the bottom of the door to drain

Also have Ebac unit, been using it in my small garage and it has been working great for the last 3 years, lost count with the amount of time I've had to empty it.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Nice little set up you have there, @robby - given me some ideas for my man cave! Sounds like I'm going down the right sort of lines by considering the Ebac and Meaco stuff. Will keep researching, but if anyone else has got some other suggestions or experiences in the meantime then please shout!

Thanks

I had a refrigerant dehumidifer years ago but that packed up - in the winter it would stop working which is when it's needed, the dessecant ones are much more reliable and economical

My Ebac says 54 DH 860 but searching that on Google returns nothing. Remember it is at least 16 years old.

Yeah, I'm looking at the dessicant models for that very reason...no point in having a dehumidifier which falls over just when you need it!

It's crazy that it's still going strong after all this time. Hope I haven't jinxed it by saying that.☺

So, a quick update for folks. I got a bit of a deal on an EcoAir DD1 classic, a 7 litre model which I hadn't been looking at previously but I saw that it's bigger brother (the 10 litre DD3 classic) was a Which Best Buy in Aug 2016. It's compact, quiet (not that that is an issue in the garage...) and has successfully been running 24/7 for the past couple of weeks with no issues. The temperature hit a low of 1.5 degrees C in my garage a couple of nights ago and the dehumidifier kept on working throughout. So far so good. If I get any issues further down the line I'll update this thread.

Cheers all
