So ive been looking at this kit on ebay

Is it safe to run alongside the OEM oil cooler? Dont want to mess with oil pressures etc, if these even effect oil pressure at all?

Normally ditch the OE cooler as heat from the oil transfer into the coolant raising the coolant temps...

If you use a separate cooler like this the OE one is surplus to requirements... they are also know to rupture internally allowing coolant and oil to mix

I've installed a similar one (although much larger), and removed the factory heat exchange. Only negative effect so far is oil takes a while to warm up. I have an oil temp gauge so I know when I can give it some stick :p

Bought this yesterday, we shall see how it goes fitting it. I have a wellycooler so fear space is limited. Excited as no need to worry on track about my oil getting silly hot

Hey Scotty

Don't be worried - There's plenty of space to fit a 16 row, even with a big FMIC - I have put mine on the drivers side in between the wheel arch liner and the intercooler pipework. From memory, I think @Prawn fitted his in the same position on the passenger side. You can just see it in the attached photo....

It just needs a bit of Heath Robinson bracketry. This photo was taken months ago, before I made up the final brackets. I can take some better ones if you are having trouble visualising how it is done.

I have my intercooler pipes where the fogs used to be so no airflow, I think im going to try and mount it to the top of the wellycooler some how so there is airflow through the top S3 grill?

S3 on dyno at Badger5

Managed to fit a rad each side with a large intercooler core and all 3' charge pipework :D

If you haven't already, you really need to use a thertmostatic sandwich plate which will have a minimal effect on oil warm up times.

@scotty_24 good to see you got it in ok, with the complete lack of crash bar you'd want to make sure you don'e have any little knocks though!

@StaceyS3 - You're car (if it can be called that) is just a different beast all together :tearsofjoy:

I've been having a similar dilemma my self recently, but only due to the MAAHOOOSIVE Trust oil cooler I picked up for peanuts...

A bit of trimming of various bit's and she's good tucked up there. Admittedly with a smaller cooler, but due to the fact I've removed the aircon to sit the cooler back I reckon I'll still be able to make it fit even if I upgrade to welly cooler... Will have to run the oil cooler pipes through the crash bar or something though...

(p.s sorry for shoddy pic taken in dark garage wit sun behind!)

Hey guys, couple of quick questions on this...

I've ditched that GReddy/Trust cooler, mainly cos it worked out a bit hectic in terms of fittings etc as I'd have to use AN/JIC connectors... Anyways, got a Mocal one like this one now.

My questions are - When you say ditch the OE oil cooler, do you mean just disconnect it from the cooling system and block off the hoses?

If yes - What's the best oil filter to use to avoid it getting in the way? I've heard people use a Polo one as it's shorter, can anyone be more specific on that?

Or - Do i completely remove the OE cooler, not use the adaptor/extender that came with the sandwich plate and screw it all together with the oil filter?

Cheers guys!

I didnt know how to "delete" the oem cooler so just left it.

If it aint broke dont fix it kind of thing.

Ive read up and I think you just block off the pipes as you say

On ones I have done in the past I either block off or join the OE cooler pipes, remove the OE cooler then IIRC I had to cut down the original threaded tube to make it the right size for the sandwich plate and so it doesn't protrude into the oil filter...

Fitting a smaller oil filter is not an option IMO...

Doesn't the OEM oil cooler also help with bringing oil temp up to temp quickly or at least otherwise quicker?

what i've done is add a 13 row mocal cooler but then also added the the OEM water/oil cooler from a B5 audi S4. In theory it was supposed to bring water and oil temps up quicker then before (it does) and also helps with cooling. I think the max i've seen at the Nurburgring was about 125-125 degrees C and 129 at castle combe when i stayed out a bit longer then normal.

The cars an AMK leon cupra R.

still too hot imho

Race distance on badgerwagen, 110-112'c 16row, no OE thing.
I dont want to drive hot oil temps into water jacket

don't disagree with you bill but on a car mainly used on the road with only a few track outings i'd argue getting the temps up quickly is almost as important as keeping them cool.

I bought mine from China (AliExpress), complete with thermostat to replace the OE cooler. The kit was cheap ($41 + shipping), but the pipes and fittings that came with it went straight into the bin - junk. The thermostat sandwich plate and the 16 row cooler itself were good quality and seemed well constructed. The identical kit is sold on Ebay and Amazon at four times the price - they even used the same pictures. So, don´t be put off by Made in China label, but be prepared to make it work for you by introducing your own bits to upgrade.

Make friends with a local hydraulic shop and you should be fine :)

Agree, the threads are universal sizes so not difficult for local shop to fabricate a few hoses.
We have ordered intercoolers from the same people. My friend wanted an oversize intercooler for his Golf, so we gave them the measurements and they custom built one for $100 plus shipping. It was exceptional quality and fitted perfectly. It is only when you start browsing sites like AliExpress that you realise how much of the kit sold on Ebay is made in China at a fraction of the price it is sold for in Europe and N America.

indeed it is a road/track balance, but thats why thermostatic sandwich plates were invented too. :)

Bringing this thread back - approx. how much hose is needed for the side mounting on the driver's side?

How long is a piece of string?

...but seriously... use string... run it from where you want to mount the cooler to where the sandwich plate is through the route you plan to take it, double it, add a bit...

Measure twice fit once, as once these pipes shrink on there no getting them off !
The cooler I bought off Matt Lewis Racing has been spot on.
I don't have a crash bar but mines not a daily it's just a track car really so not too bothered.
If I was to fit it again I would go for a Prawn style wheel arch liner job with some ducting.
Only reason I didn't was because the well poker piping is in the way and I wanted it on quick for a trackday.

Just don't have the facility to measure up where i am at the moment... so was just looking for a rough measurement :)

and yeah def. always get more than needed to allow for these things! thinking of using push lock hose

I'm planning on fitting this Mocal kit soon but I also want to incorporate an oil pressure gauge.

Can an oil pressure sandwich plate be fitted along with the thermostatic plate for the cooler or is there a better way to do this?
TIA
