Well recently my A4 1.8 TQ (150) B6 doesnt feel as nippy as it once did. Im a bit of a noob and just wondering what things I could check myself before taking it to the garage. Im thinking air filter and spark plugs. Would these effect performance? Also whats the best way to clean the MAF? I have a guide on cleaning it with a cotton earbud but read somewhere here about using brake cleaner, is that safe?

Something Ive noticed with this car is it seems quite noisy anywhere from 80mph+. Im not sure if this is engine noise or road noise or perhaps its just how the quattro sounds. Can anyone tell me what kind of RPMs I should be doing at 80mph.

Sorry if Ive asked any stupid questios above but like I said Im a bit a noob.

Cheers for the help.

pete. :)

Hi Pete

When was the car last serviced?.....wont do any harm taking out air filter give it a blow out.take the plugs out and give them a clean or replace matters when last serviced
Cleaning MAF with Carb Cleaner is what i use you can get it from Halfords
What fuel do you run in her
RPM not sure of

Hi revhead, sorry for the late reply I thought I would have got email notification to any folowups. Anyways I had oil change about 4 month ago, Ive only had the car about 6 month but the next service is due in 7k or April 07 so Im guessing its been done not too long ago.

Ill think Im gonna repace the air filter and plugs. The engine runs smooth, its just it seems to be lacking a little in speed. Power seems to die off at 4K RPM too. Oh and Im just running normal unleaded in her.

Suppose it could be a number of things. :(

Something else you may be able to help with is, my brake warning light came on last night. Would that be for fluid level only or does it also come on for low pads? It only came on once and the pads do seem low.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

Pete.

Ps: just realized I had email notification turned off. ;)

If the light comes on and flashes at you and makes a noise then check brake fluid level, however if it stays on constantly(not flashing) your pads are low and i would replace them. Alot of the time the pad sensor isnt used on cheaper pads, so have a look at them and replace them if they are low.

Your engine power problem certainly sounds like the maf, cleaning it may or may not help temporarily but you're going to have to replace it, usually about £80 providing you give the old unit back.

A good way to tell if its giving u problems is to unnplug it and run the car along the road to see if it runs better - be aware that leaving it unplugged is not a fix.

Well its only came on once last week, the pdas do look a bit low but Im wondering if the computer might have just tripped.

So running the car without the MAF should improve it if the maf is faulty? I dont know why but I just thought it would run worse.

Cheers for the help, Ill give that a shot.

Pete.:)

Both problems exactly same on my A3 so if you find a cure could u please let me no?! thanks.

what type of fuel are u running the car on , my old 2 litre turbo lost alot of power when it was not run on super, i would recomend shell V power 99 octane fuel, thats what i run my S4 on

Put new MAF and plugs on car but still the same anyone got any other ideas??

Something ive just stumbled upon is the intake air temprature sensor located on the intake manifold just after the throttle body. Apparently this can get dirty and give power loss and poor MPG, Im not sure if this would throw up a code or a light but deffo worth a look at. Ive just checked mine and it was covered in oil, Ive just cleaned it and had a quick blast about. It seemed better but not 100% sure yet, Ill post the results here when I get a chance to give it a proper run.
