Now then Gents (and Ladies). Something electrically strange is going on!!!

Kindly help with my diagnosis.

Every now and then, from cold, I'll set off in 1st, get to 10-15 mph (and the whole electrical system) ie: Headlights, Dash lights, Radio, will "blink" radio goes off / comes back on... One light may go out (until turned off/ back on to reset) and on the odd occasion, even connect 4 on the dash. Like it's shorts!!??

Turn the car off / back on again... No problems. No dash warning lights.

I'm thinking along the line of alternator is knackered as its not keeping volts up. Is there a distributor / regulator to "spread" electric around the car that's failing? It's had a new Bosch S4 / S5 battery in the last 12 months so I think its not that.

Car has done 110k. 2002 plate BAM. No access to VAGCOM. (I have free version though).

  • Anybody else had this?

Gonna check the fuse relay on top of the battery for rust / corrosion.
Can anybody tell me which fuses to check in the drivers door? 11? 20 & 21?
Then have her tested across the battery and/or alternator & tidy up the terminals etc.

Then i'll be stuck!!!

HELPPPPPP!!

Thank you.
Joe

Hi,
Could be a few different things, probably not the alternator though. Other than the things you have listed above the ignition switch could be duff, possibly an intermittent relay issue but I would have thought that would show up more.

Top of the battery looks good with absolute no blue "fuzz" or corrosion. Negative terminal is ever so slightly loose. This maybe?!

Where's the ignition switch?! Expensive to replace?! Big job?! Prone to failing?

Would a full VCDS print off/ diagnosis show something (to finger point) even though it may not throw a dash light up?

Like you said, it's intermittent as it happens ever 3rd/ 4th journey on average.

Hate for it to get worse though!!!

Terminal 30 which is the red thick positive wire on the fuse box ontop of the battery, take it off and clean the connection.

That same symptom used to happened and to me, but my symptoms were during summer and i bet on my fuse relay on top of the battery, something looked suspicious to me. The only difference is that sometimes was happening while driving or over a missed bump...
