Facelift 1000 Miles, Discs Rusting Already.. ARGH!

Interestingly I found/find EBC Redstuff perfect for my 8P Audi RS3 as they resolved all of the 'usual' problems found with OEM pads and gave much improved braking and pedal feel for road use - and have been a strong advocate for their use on the 8P RS3.

However, tried Redstuff on our 8J Audi TT and they were absolute rubbish, just no 'bite' and so reverted to OEM and the brakes are superb.

Same with our 8X Audi A1 (185bhp), the OEM pads are way better than the EBC items.

Back to my Lotus Elan (1971 Sprint) days and in the early 90's EBC were and still are the only supplier of rear brake pads and I did find - I was maintaining numerous other Elans at the time - that the differences in the 'same' brake pad from EBC (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc manufacture) ranged from useless to magic! So beware....

That's the POR15 on :cold:

I am surprised how nice and easy this product was to apply, once I applied the second coat I thought "that can't be it, such little work to stop the discs from rusting".. fingers crossed it will work as on here! Highly recommend this product, to all!!

Of course one thing led to another, my wheels and under my arches have had a deep clean... I couldn't stop at that, so gave the car a clean too.. :shrug:

While I was cleaning mine last weekend, I noticed the rear hubs (not the disc surfaces) have stared to rust - quite severely. Fronts are fine. As the car was due into West London Audi yesterday (Tuesday) for trim replacement I ask them to look at it and rectify....

Just had a call from my contact there. Audi have refused to replace he disks saying its ware and tear. West London have, however replaced the rear disks at thier cost as I am a good customer. Great service from them but I don't see why Audi should get away with it that easily, so I'll be taking it up wit them once I get the car back tomorrow.

Anticipating that I will be totally wasting my time with th em, I'm interested to know how you've got on with the POR15 and is there anything else out there. The only thing that puts me off POR15 is I've heard the coating turns yellow when heated.

Only very slight 'yellow' tinge on the hub; if painting the outside edge of the disc then yes but way more orange than yellow but for me that's sooo much better than RUST! If you see what I mean....

I have set myself a reminder to take some pictures tomorrow for you. I wash my car frequently and sadly it has been driven through winter back and forth work, so if they were going to rust it would have started by now. I must say I am very impressed with it. The outer of my front discs have gone dark orange they have gotten that hot, but the rears are only slightly yellow as above. The centre hub however on both is still perfectly clear. I don't drive hard mainly just daily driving, it is just inevitable that they will discolour on the outer edge.

I took a friend from work out in my car yesterday prior to paying a visit to Audi, I pulled back up at Audi with people glaring and I had plumes of smoke coming off of the front brakes!! It is the coating that smokes I believe, but only when the discs are extremely hot.. my discs turned slightly purple somehow haha. I will say while in the test S3 I managed to cook the brakes, but in the RS3 I never experienced any fade.. that is where the difference comes in. Anyway, needless to say I sold my friend on it and he has placed an order for a new S3 saloon!

I would 110% get a coating on them, I couldn't stand the rust on my old car's hubs and had to paint them silver but POR15 has 110% cured the problem. So, @45bvtc I owe you thanks!

The rear of the disc will be covered by the backing plate. As GSB says there's too little pad to disc contact there, the pad should contact virtually the entire surface of the disc :-

Absolutely horrible to look at. What would be the best to get rid of this? New pads that actually cover the entire surface of the disc? New discs? Paint? POR15?
'Someone' said to me (and seen a few youtube videos say), if I just apply silver paint over corroded area it should be fine and if any gets on the disc breaking will get rid of excess paint. However would this not cause the paint to clog up in the pad and compromise efficiency of breaking? Eventually after x amount of miles paint that has clogged in the pad (if any) would of gone, but not sure if this would have any adverse affects on on the pads.
I would hate to know that safety could been potentially comprised due to the pad clogging.

Does any know whats the best way if any to getting rid of rust on the 'mounting hub' (where the bolt pattern is, highlighted in a blue circle) and rust on the backing plate (marked out in green).

@AudiNutta Looking forward to see the pictures, I'm interested to see how this has held up. Have you heard of ACF50 before? It's mainly used on motorcycles and on aeroplanes. I've heard some really good stuff about this, it can be applied practically everywhere except on braking components and I don't think this causes any yellowing, I'll be buying a bottle to try very soon. I rang up ACF50 today to ask if it would be suitable on the mounting hub and I was told that the product creeps and it is active for 12-18 months. He was unsure to advise so he told me to ring up tomorrow and clarity it with the manager.
I will report back once I know moreeeeeeee :footy:
Edit: Just having a closer look now on that picture. There are lines on the surface of this disc is this a sign of damage? Pads or disc?

Hello mate, what mileage have your discs done ? Yes scoring is generally bad and a sign of damage/wear. First thing I'd check is if there is a visible step at the edge of the disc, if so measure and compare with Audi's recommendations this may be in your owners manual or ring your dealer.

The backing plate are just over £20 each I replaced mine at the same time as the discs but applied two thick coats of hammerite before fitting. If it's very localised rust spots try a wire brush on a dremmel to remove the rust then coat with hammerite.

I'm really not to sure, I'm guessing the full 44K? But like I said I'm not to sure, I need to check the service history that came with it to see if it has been replaced in the past.

So is it safe to paint that area?

You're welcome - no best not to paint the surface that contacts with the wheel.

Discs have to come off to replace the backing plates so worth replacing at the same time. Calipers look smart !
