2017 - S5 Incomming!

What sort of numbers are people getting?

The discounts are sizable, but with the APR being what it is the monthly payments do seem quite high.

The best quote I received (last week) was £4k personal deposit, £550 pm, GFV 22k on 4 year PCP. This is on a £53k car.

I think discounts in the region of 15-16% are manageable.

Which is quite nuts when you consider I got 18% on the outgoing B8.5 model last year...!

Mine is a S5 Black Ed with about £2000 worth of options and with £6k down I'm paying £380 over 2years, GFV £27k.

Perhaps it's just an indication of the financial situation at VW following the "defeat device" crisis. Although I don't work in the motor industry I'd imagine that excluding R&D costs Audi have the highest margins in their S and RS cars. Now whilst they want to maintain those margins they won't want to do so if sales are low. Perhaps better to reduce the margins by discounting and get the sales up. Remember that the B9 price is significantly higher than the B8.5 and especially some options (IIRC the sports diff is 100% more expensive), so even with 15-16% discount they must be making more profit than with the B8.5s at 18-19%.

Chimp - I'm taking the same route from a 2014 Estoril S3 to the S5 so will be interesting how we both transition.

Sparky86 - as you are damn lucky to have your S5 (very similar to my chosen spec) can you tell me if the rear seat back folds? The Audi bumph starts by saying it does but seems to be 'fixed' in the S5.

they fold down almost flat in a 40/20/40

Well, I'm fiddling about with the audi finance calculator but I have to admit I'm struggling to make sense of it.

I have managed to replicate a dealer's quote on a £53k S5 by adjusting the Deposit to fix the Total amount of credit (which has taken the audi contribution into account). Now this has given me the same monthly amount as what the dealer has given me. But if I was to replicate the process with an A5 2.0 TFSI sline quattro, despite having roughly £4k lower total credit amount, the same APR, same mileage and same term, I am getting a very similar monthly amount to the S5.

Seems very strange, but am I missing a trick here?

Just chiming in - have test driven the new S5 coupe (current outgoing S5 owner) and can say it feels a lot better to drive than the outgoing model! I spec'd the dynamic steering on my current model and the test drive car also had it, but the steering felt a lot better to me on this new model. (Moving to S4 and have not spec'd dynamic steering!)

The new model feels like a massive leap over the outgoing model - especially the interior, which is absolutely stunning.

Enjoy!

Nope, quite common.

Compare the amount you are paying interest and capital on (I.e the total amount borrowed - the GFV) as well as the amount you will just pay interest in (I.e the GFV). It's the amount you are paying capital and interest on that has the biggest impact on the monthlies.

While the S5 costs more, it will have a higher GFV. What you will probably see is the amount you pay back in capital and interest is very similar between the models as a result of this.

Obviously running costs are different, so there's more to it that just the cost of the car, but tax and MPG are very close between the S5 and 2.0tfsi quattro so it's a bit of a no brainer. Insurance my be a different matter, but not in my experience either.

Was a nice surprise :)

My car was due to start production on the 23rd of Jan!!! But checked today (have to every day :sadlike:) and overnight it's changed to the Panel Shop!!! woo hoo!.... Better sell the S3 soon!

Having lived with the coupe for 2 weeks I've found a couple of niggles

1. The seatbelt presenter (seatbelt butler) for the driver side only seems to only work for the driver if there is a rear passenger, the passenger side doesn't have the same problem.

2. When the car is wet and you open the rear boot he water runs over the seal lip and into the boot.

Both items I've raised with my dealer if there is any fix for both planned but thought I should share this with potential buyers.

That's a shame regarding the water into the boot. I have identical problems with the TT Mk2 when the boot is open.

I can only presume at this stage that it's a similar design issue but let's see what they come back with.

Thanks for the update.

I'm surprised about the water in particular. In my S3 saloon it cleverly runs down the sides and out, as if Audi has engineered it in, so strange that such an obvious flaw hasn't been picked up by them given how good they are generally about that stuff

Dynamic steering on the B9 is a huge improvement and coupled with the new sports diff makes for a significantly enhanced drive with real connection to the front wheels - I tested an S4 and an S5 both with and without the DS and the cars with it felt far more precise. I know Audi arent pushing the Dynamic Steering this time because of the bad reviews last time, but its seriously worth testing. I am seeing very few people adding it, which I think is a massive mistake

The demo I drove had dynamic steering and it was perfectly fine. In any case I have specced it,the sports diff and dynamic suspension.

I've not specced it I must say. Every review I've read slates it. It was standard on my S3 and now it's optional, so I didn't bother. I went for the suspension and diff though

I have to say I have it in mine and I can't fault it at all, only thing I'm not so keen on is the lane assist where it tugs at your steering wheel to Keep you in line, can be a very strange sensation

I haven't specced the dynamic steering as others have said it wasn't received well by reviewers and that fact that the rear diff and suspension is costing enough another lump on steering was pushing it... although I haven't driven one yet I hope there is some weight to standard steering but maybe not as much as my S3 in Dynamic... got popeye arms from it lol

More exiting ... car has been at "Quality Control" stage for 3 days now... must be ready to take to port soon :)

I'd be interested to read these reviews which 'slate' DS. Can anyone provide links?

Thanks @lozzermo
With a caveat that the DS may be different on the B9 than the B8.5 (which is possible but I feel unlikely), I imagine that the reviewers comment probably comes from the simple fact that the test car did not have the sports differential. Maybe it did but I feel that unlikely since the review specifically points out the adaptive dampers and the DS, so if also had the £1200 sports diff then I can't believe that the reviewer wouldn't have mentioned it. I would be willing to bet that the test car was not "nervous" because of the DS but because the standard diff was starting to slip. Again, I have a B8.5, not a B9, but for me the full ADS package of dampers, DS and sports diff makes for an excellent handling S5. I know from experience that when I have a 'lively' drive without the DS in dynamic it is a lot harder to make the turns and there is less precision.

I've read a couple of reviews that praise it, though with caveats on the extra weight. I understand is a new system vs the 8.5.

Well I've just been on a test drive and I'm pretty certain the S5 I took out didn't have it on. What was noticeable was two things. 1. The steering feels more natural without it, 2. Its much harder to get round corners at slow speeds, I'm used to my S3's dynamic steering, and it requires little effort to do slow speed turns, and I found I was not putting on enough lock. I'm sure I'd adjust with time, but I must say, it has made me wonder now whether I should spec it after all! The only caveat is the £950 premium!!

I didn't really notice the cornering at low speeds, but I'm coming from a servotronic B8, which I drive in Dynamic, so its pretty heavy.. What I did notice was that the steering was far more precise exiting corners at speed and overall just felt better connected to the front wheels that the (same) car I drove without the DS.

Called Audi today as another fault has arisen where on odd occasions when the door Is opened the driver window will not roll down enough and the door will open but the door will not close as the window is too high to pass the seal, so after explaining the issues they are going to investigate the issues and try to fix and will need the car for at least a day problem is the next appointment is the 21st of Feb.

But all this screams of electrical fault in the drivers door....not good

Loving the look of the new S5 Coupe...Currently I drive a 16 plate RS3 and a 66 A4 Avant 'motorway barge' .. Both cars are great.
I was a little cynical when I heard rumours of VC in the RS3 and wasn't really worried but not having VC. However having it in the A4 for a few months I love it.. As for B&O I love that too and have in Factory order RS3 but sadly not in the A4 which was an 'orphan', not 100% ideal spec but wanted Pano roof and gained VC and vision pack and other bits.

I reckon in a year or I could be tempted with an S5.. I had 2 earlier 5's 58/11 plate (Coupe and Cab). Love the Coupe style, Cab OK but sorry I don't really like the S5 Sportback, the styling doesn't seem to work, bit like the 3 door A3 where the Sportback seems to work better. Just my 2p as always! Cheers RG

Have to agree. I tried to like the new S5 Sportback, and held off pushing the button on an S4 Avant till I saw one in the flesh, but its just still not working (like the last model). Looks to me too like a Mondeo or if being a little nicer a Tesla. I think the 4 Series GC is a better looking car, but with inferior build and paging tech now.. be interesting to see the face lift next year and if their pair the amazing new 3l engine with 4 wheel drive over here (only in Europe currently).

The new S5 Coupe is lovely, again. Funny the critics don't think so and prefer the Sportback.

In a year there should be an RS5?

10 Days now in QC... still not moving. It's a bit frustrating as the plan was to advertise the S3 once the S5 moves to "on it's way". Got the advert ready/photo's etc just need to post it.

I have emailed my Dealer to ask what he has as a status.

Also over the weekend I managed to take an S5 Coupe out for 20 minutes and I must admit the quality of the cockpit, drive and sound of the engine was fantastic! Couldn't open it up as it was the Dealer Owners wifes car. I noticed the pick up from 1300 revs was brilliant.

Agreed on that they have good pickup and so keen to drop down a gear (especially in dynamic Auto)

The only downside I have with the interior and this is tiny is the screen looks like it should fold away like the a6/7/8 but I've gotten use to it but would have been nice to have a folding one too to make it a little cleaner.

So things went really quick with the build at first... started production a week early in Jan (week 4 instead of week 5) and went through all the stages taking roughly a day at each until Quality Control where the car spent 12 days!! (Don't know if this is worrying or not).

It left QC Last Friday (3rd Feb) and has been at Order Status 38 (I believe in transit to docks) and its been at that stage since then... waiting hasn't been to bad but since putting my S3 for sale late on Sunday evening (hangover stopped me doing during the day LOL) it has sold to the first person who called with deposit left on Tuesday and hopefully pick up on Friday if the V5 with the new reg number turns up.

So I would have thought the S5 should have been here this week meaning that I might have taken it, but it seems I should just chill and take it on the 1st March just for the resale down the line?

Got a Punto 1.2 to drive at the moment which is.. transport! Girlfriend has been driving it for 2 years with a really clonking noise from the suspension/steering over every bump and its scaring the crap out of me!!

Anyone else expecting an S5 any minute?

So the car arrived at dealer last Friday!! I have arranged to pick up tomorrow morning ... shame it wasn't today as it's a lovely sunny day and tomorrow looks like rain.
Super Excited now!!

Any updates Chimp? Did you get it?? Show us pictures, pleeeeease :)

Hey yes car was picked up on Friday... managed a couple of pics (not great) as the showroom was packed with pickups... 21 other cars and it was like the a tsunami outside so couldn't get any photos outside... car was dirty within 5 mins of driving.

Car looked stunning, VERY please with the drive although less than 4k revs until I reach 500 miles i think. The tech in the car is amazing!

Handover was good although I noticed a few swirl marks on the bonnet ( I had this on Estoril blue S3 but all over the car last time from another dealer but they were rubbish and denied there was a problem).

I will give Credit to the dealer they were fantastic sorting it. They have a detailer/panel shop they use on the same estate and it was corrected in 40 minutes... whilst we carried out the paperwork. I inspected inside with bright lights and all looked good.

I have flicked through the manual but didn't see anything to allow text messages to be displayed on the MMI which I had on the S3, don't know if this can be done and was nice to have.

One problem I think I have though is the passenger selt belt valet or feeder? It doen't seem to work and I can see an option to reset or enable in the MMI?
Anyone know how to make it work?
