If you were to buy another A4, what engine would you go for?

Thinking of chopping in my A4, it's beautiful and I love it, but I do 500 miles a week, and in a 2.4 it's fairly brutal on the wallet, thinking maybe going for a Tdi or the 1.8T ?

I have a 1.9 Tdi 130 and its an awesome machine..
It is quite heavy but the engine manages well with the weight..
A friend of mine mapped his a4 and he says that with that bit more power the car absolutely flies..
I intend to do the same but only after I get the brakes done..
My car isn't mapped but still I have a good kick out of it.. That thing pulls off in second gear like it was nothing and it spins the wheels in second too..
So, I would advise for a tdi 130.

Honestly, there are no engines in the B6 A4 range that excite or interest.

I would pick the 3.0 V6 each and every time. Not because I'm crazy about it, but because it's the easiest to swap a 4.2 V8 40V into.

X2 on the 1.9 Tdi 130, i have quottro & it's been mapped & goes like **** off a shovel, i also have a B7 3.0 tdi quattro but much prefer the 1.9

whats the biggest difference you find between the 1.9 and the 3.0?

Just find the 1.9 more fun to drive, it revs freely through the gears, the 3.0 obviously being a manual seems to closely geared, ok it's quicker but not by much.

1.9 Tdi with a Blacksmoke remap, pulls like a train and returns good mpg, I have a 180 bhp 1.8t in a A3 and it's quite thirsty and not much faster than my A4 Tdi infact round town low down I would say the a4 has the edge with all that Torque

1.8t every time, they can be picked up much cheaper than any diesel because everyone is terrified of the LOW OIL PRESSURE problems. That is easily sorted (if it even exists) if you want more power, a K04-15 will give more torque and pull harder in the higher rpm's even with the standard map, remapping obviously will give you more. The thing I like about the 1.8t is the fact that you can drive it hard when you want or if you're driving sedately you can get late 30's even low 40's from them, best of both worlds I think. Quattro is harder to achieve the same mpg but that's to be expected.

I was just about to mention fuel economy in the petrol variants ! If money's no problem then a s4 v8 is the best of the bunch- manual box and sound to die for ! If you're a cheapskate and look after your pennies then the pd130 tdi mapped is also fun, throw a few parts at it and 200-250 Bhp is easily attainable on a decent budget. I would personally take a later v6 tdi, one of my gtb2260vk turbo kits, larger nozzles and intercooler upgrade will still return 40Mpg and give you 300 Bhp all in a smart package with a very strong gearbox and a chassis able to take the power and lay it on the tarmac ! Few mods from it's more powerful brothers (s4 and rs4) will make a nice looking/handling package !

I love the sound of the W8 from the VW stable but it's such a flawed engine

How about this one Chris?

Rs4 b6 is a fine motor, sadly it has the wrong engine in ! The b5 had the proper engine however the chassis is a bit dated ! I wish the rs4 b6 had a 3 litter twin turbocharged engine, it would make the chassis work well !

Rs4 B6?
Are you sure?
Didn't audi skip the RS model in the B6?

3.0tdi B7 mapped to 270 IMO, decent economy, 33mpg dodging around, seen 44 on a run. Plenty of twist so fairly rapid as well, defo needs the map to get rid of the midrange flat spot though.

A 1.9 TDI diesel cannot be quicker than the 3.0 petrol however the surge of torque makes the diesel feel fast compared with the smooth power delivery from the NA petrol engine !

B6 never been available with the 3.0 tdi engine ! I don't mind the 3.0 tdi engine in the b7 but the early engines were riddled with problems and road tax is a killer + the manual gearboxes are pants and only available on lower powered models that have the bv50 turbo and not the stronger gtb2260vk turbocharger ! Not easy to convert either !

Road Tax is a killer? £290?

I believe Adams was referring to Stevie's comment.

Oh, I didn't realise it had to be a b6 tdi - even though I didn't know there was no b6 variant! :) I've got the tiptronic, recommend it, but can't comment on the manual. Road tax is about £290, could be better I suppose.

I thought OP was looking at suggestions on how to cut his fuel bill, don't know if S4 V8 or big turbo conversions are the normal route for saving a few quid ;-)

I'd love to get my 1.9 Quattro remapped, but I'm worried about being able to remove it if need be and damage to parts etc. I'd love to get better mileage out of my car. How do you use the Blacksmoke map? Thanks ;)

I didn't mention 3.0 tdi (I said petrol) it was gutless and went in 2 weeks
The 1.9 tdi cannot be faster than a 3.0 petrol unless the later is in limp mode ! 130 Bhp vs 216 Bhp on early models... even mapped tdi won't beat a stock NA 3.0 petrol !

Very interesting thread.

Im late to the diesel party as I have grown up a bit snobish towards them. That all changed when i saw straight piped 3.0tdi A5's that literally sounded like GT-R's and obviously took off similarly too.

I cant physically imagine the 1.9Tdi being that much fun to drive though as the power is so down. Yes the torque im sure will feel decent but really better than its bigger brother 2.7tdi or 3.otdi in the B7 version?

I'd love to get a 3.0tdi and hybrid turbo it! :)

I have had a 3.0 & a 1.9 for the last six months then one had to go, i kept the 1.9, better drive & more fun.

I've owned 3 A4 TDI models - B5 1.9 TDI 110 FWD, B6 1.9 TDI 130 FWD and a B5 2.5 TDI 150 Quattro.

The B5 2.5 TDI Quattro was mapped to 183hp and 355Nm. The B6 1.9 TDI 130 was certainly slower than my 3.0 V6, and slower than my old B6 1.8T 163 Avant Quattro.

My B5 2.5 V6 TDI 180 Quattro was a closer match for my B6 3.0 V6 Quattro, and in gear acceleration was stronger. But overall, the 3.0 is a faster car. None of my stock 1.9 TDI's - B5 or B6 even come close.

Of course it can.. My brothers 1.9Tdi MK2 golf did me over in a 320bhp 2.7 S4 the other night.. I also used to give him a hard time with my 130bhp (with two tuning boxes) in his ST220 3.0 mondeo..

My choice would be a 1.9 Tdi 130bhp.. will go on forever if serviced and handiest on fuel.. I have had a 1.8T, 1.9 100bhp, 1.9 130bhp, 2.0 petrol and 4.2 V8.. 130bhp everytime for me..

PS.. 130's never gave great mpg 38-42 (I have owned 3 cars with this engine), best was the 100bhp I had in a skoda superb which did 48mpg over every tank. 2.0 did 34mpg and 1.8T 30mpg.. 4.2 did 15.8mpg..

Really really interesting.

I just assumed because the power is wayyy down there it wouldnt be as fun to drive. Ive had a 122bhp old C c-clas lump and it was awfully slow.

Again, im sure the low down torque of the diesel helps with this 'feel'.

It's how they deliver that torque too , 1.9 130 PD's tend to torque dollop after 2K .

Exactly. Non-stock 1.9 TDI's. Because a stock PD 130 is significantly slower than even a healthy B5 2.8 30V.

Quicker than. 3.0 Tdi ????

Has anyone got a map, I think this thread has strayed off topic!

Haha if you mean the literal version of ''map''

Back on topic, I wouldnt think a 1.9tdi mapped version would be quicker than a petrol 3.0 around 220bhp. But the tdi is boosted so I believe you.

Quicker than a 3.0tdi ? No chance

For now, I would still stick to a 1.8t in a B6 because of the tuning potential, which i plan on going through. If it wasnt for this reason, I would trust you all and go 1.9tdi with an aggressive remap :p

The death of the V8.

So nose heavy , love the noise , but the 4 cylinder 20+ psi forced induction rules...
