This really is a message to all those people who think it's a good idea to buy a clone cable either from China or from eBay. (Yes I actually bought one to save a few quid) First of all having never owned a genuine cable I thought the quality was petty good. The software came on a mini CD, it's cracked version of the original so you can't update it. I was happy it worked and for only £25 I thought wow what a bargain. However I was very wrong. The cable cut out while coding!, the connection was obviously loose and not made very well. I ended up with a 'Control Module Incorrectly Coded' error message and obviously I didn't have chance to save the original configuration. This now means it's off to Audi so they can try to load the original coding from the factory with a nice £75 price tag and also with the possibility of losing my custom stage 2 remapping along with it plus the days I'm going to be without a car.
This is what the cloned cable looked like;

As you can see from the photos above I opened up the cable just to see what i was actually plugging into my car and the quality was quite shocking.
So for anybody reading this don't be tempted to buy a clone cable, It will inevitably cost you more than a genuine cable to fix.
I have since bought a new cable from an authorised dealer in the UK and learned my lesson. The quality of these new cables are pretty amazing in comparison and you also get free software updates from Ross-Tech.

The new VCDS cable comes with pretty much all the support anyone could need plus the help from fellow forum members. Please anyone who has thought about buying from eBay or China DON'T it's really not worth it.

Sorry to hear you had to take the car to audi. Using a fake cable is a really bad idea. Outdated software and poor build quality can screw up your ecu.

It's still booked in at the moment for next week.

This is my fault code, after clearing it comes back;

As you have found there are issues with the fake cables that could bite you . At least you are still able to use the car.
When ever you use VCDS even a fake version I suspect they will be the same, coding and adaption changes are recorded on a log.
Look for the files adplog and coding log and they should show the previous value of coding applied before it was changed.

Thanks for the help, however I removed all traces of that cloned VCDS from my computer and did a fresh install from downloading the current 17.1 from the Ross-Tech website when i received my new HEX-V2 cable.

Wish i had of saved the Coding-log file now, would have possibly helped, that's if it saved in the first place. Thanks for the advise i didn't even know there was a log. Could be handy in the future.

I've got a chinese cable, it's ok for fault reading but I wouldn't use it for full recoding, sorry to hear it's messed up for you, hope it's a relatively cheap fix!
I'd like to get a genuine cable for VCDS, just looking for the best place to buy as I don't want to be limited to 3/10 VINS

Did you try (or think about) getting the coding correct yourself? I could maybe help? What car and module is it? We could go through the coding and see if it will rectify.

The module coded incorrectly just means that something doesn't match with another module. I had it with navigation and radio, one had a CD changer, the other didn't. I just added the CD changer (which I have) and all was good.

Always take a picture on your camera phone of the original codes before making any alterations.
