2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Likewise mine was fully serviced but 2 were from somewhere else. I've spoken audi customer service and theve said unless I can prove what oil went in then basically I'm stuffed and will have to cough up. I can't see them changing there minds tbh. And if any damage is done to the engine well that bill is going to double. Not happy with them at all!

I've said there has been other cases like mine when have done it all for free but doesn't seem to make a difference

Hi,

I’m new on here and this is the first that I’ve heard about this oil consumption problem. I’ve just purchased an A4 2011 2.0T TFSI Quattro Dynamik. I purchased it from an Audi dealer with FSH done by the same dealer plus the usual 1 year warranty you get with an Audi approved car. I checked the oil level today and it’s reading halfway down. I’ve only done 210 miles in it so far. That’s a worry. It’s had the 145 checkpoint list done that Audi do. I noticed that the ‘recheck oil level’ box has been ticked. It’s last service was approx 2300 miles ago, where they changed the oil. What I don’t know is do Audi top the level up to max when doing the checkpoint list or not. If they just leave it if the level is showing ‘ok’ by the car then I don’t at the moment have a problem. But if they do top it up then I definitely have. I will be keeping a close eye on it over the Christmas period. If the level starts going down quickly I will contact Audi UK and try and have the fault repaired (free of change) at my nearest Audi dealer. I love the car and want to keep it. It’s only done 42,250 miles, 1 previous owner and is in showroom condition.

You have a 1 year warranty like i did. Repaired foc no quibble with them at all

Thank you. That's eased my mind. Like i said i will monitor it over the next week or so and if there is a problem i will contact Audi UK first if not before then soon after Christmas. This is all news to me. I'd had 3 previous A4's with no problems at all. Thanks once again.

Always contact audi UK first before approaching the dealer.

I have the same problem audi want me to pay 10% towards the fix. I've spoken to audi customer services and they said because it's been serviced elsewhere they could of used different oil ! I can't prove otherwise so will probably have no choice but to cough up now. Is it worth speaking to trading standards or citizens advice, as it's a known manufacturing fault so they should cover 100%.

Unfortunately they are using there get out of jail card here sadly.
As you can't prove the oil used, audi use this to there advantage I am afraid.
If you had receipts and evidence of correct oil it would be more in your favour.
I was lucky in the fact I had all receipts for oil I bought from tps which was Quantum long life oil, and the dates all tallied up with the servicing done.
But they did ask for it, copied it and sent off to audi UK for approval

I've got full history, but 2 of the stamps aren't with Audi. The dealership where happy everything had been done on time and even contacted the garage of the other stamps to confirm what was done etc.

If I were you I'd contact Audi UK again and state you know of people who've had the work done FOC without a full Audi history. Just stand your ground and tell them you know your rights, the issue has nothing to do with what oil is in the car, it's a manufacturing fault and Audi know it

I can't believe this is still going on. It makes you wonder how much VAG have had to shell out; what with the diesel scandal and oil issue.

They must be saving next to nothing in comparison to the overall loss, forcing people to continue paying for the repair.

There is no consistency with Audi on this it seems, like I said my 10 plate A4 had 2 non Audi stamps in the book. Local Audi dealership contacted them to get all paperwork and everything was fine, 100% of cost covered. I fail to see how Audi can say the wrong oil may/has caused the issue when they've acknowledged it's a manufacturing fault!

I'd personally take it further until they cover the full cost

It does look like i have an oil consumption issue. It was sitting at halfway but after just 50 miles of mostly A road/motorway driving the gauge is now down, showing only 0.33 full. It was probably at max when it left the Audi dealer i brought it from, so it has dropped that much after just 270 miles. The dealer i got it from is 85 miles from me but i have a much nearer dealer. With Christmas less than 2 weeks away now and the fact that i haven't the time at the moment i will keep it topped up and contact Audi UK first immmediately after (from the advice given on here) and hopefully open a case with them. I feel a bit easier that is has a full Audi service history and a 1 year warranty. And after reading this thread that others have had the work done FOC. It's just all the hassle that goes with it. Audi should have just recalled all the cars right at the beginning when they knew they had a engine problem.

I totally agree with that sentiment!

God only knows how many other owners unaware of this problem, and unable to gleen knowledge through forums such as this, and just accepting there audi has a thirst for oil are out there.?
It is a bit of a farce to be fair and ultimately at the owners demise

I agree. I reckon the previous owner of my car could have been one of them who thought it was normal. If it wasn't for this forum i wouldn't have known either. I absolutely love the car. She drives beautifully and looks great. If i can just get this oil problem sorted i can see myself keeping her for a good few years. The A4 i traded in as part ex for this car was 10 years old and had no issues at all. My plan is to keep this car for around 4-5 years. Thank you to everyone for your help and advice.

Yes I'll be talking to citizens advice about it and see if I have a case as it is a fault so they should cover 100% of it. The car is due a service but I won't be taking it to audi and paying there prices with their attitude on this issue.

My service history isn't main dealer so I'm expecting to have the same problem with them.

Just rang Audi UK. Got a very helpful guy who said i need to do an oil consumption test, which is fair enough. My local Audi dealer just rang me. It's booked in for the 29th. The girl told me there is a 2nd test to do after that. I don't know what that is. But the good news is that if it fails the test Audi will cover the full cost of repair as my car has their 1 year warranty for approved Audi......phew! Thinking about it they never asked about the service history, although they might already have it as it's been serviced since the beginning with 6 stamps by Audi.

Yeah had it last week, failed easily. Just waiting for Audi CS to call.
Good news then. I'm having to go the long way round trying to put pressure on them to cover the full cost

My 10 plate a4 1.8, bought secondhand from a used car dealer with 60k on the clock, goes back to audi Monday, it failed the consumption test. They are going to carry out the work free of charge to put it right, they will want the car for 4 days. I didn't get the car from an Audi dealer, but it had the correct audi service stamps in the book, so they haven't disputed liability at all. I have put 5 litres of oil in over 2000 miles driven since purchase, so I hope this will sort it!

Hi my car i believe has the same problem. It's going in on the 29th to start the test. If it fails, which i reckon it will easily, i've been told by Audi that it will be repaired free of charge like yours. But may i ask did they charge you for the oil test it's self and if so how much was it? The girl at the dealer thought it was a grey area as to who actually paid for the test. Many thanks in advance.

The dealer I bought the car from dealt with audi on my behalf, as they'd given me a warranty with the car. I'm pretty sure the dealer told me he didn't have to pay for the stage one test to be done. I have to say that when I found the car had this problem I thought I'd have real trouble getting it all sorted, but the dealer took ownership of the problem as soon as I discovered it. I think that I'll end up with a better car once audi have done the fix than I would have if it never had the problem. I'll post when I get the car back next weekend and update you.

Hi,

Many thanks for your reply. I brought my car from an Audi dealer that's 85 miles from me so i'm dealing with my local dealer. It has full Audi service history plus a 1 year warranty from Audi. Audi UK rang the dealer to arrange the test. It was the guy at Audi UK who told me if it fails then Audi will fix it FOC. It was just the girl at my local dealer who didn't know if it was me or them that paid for the test. I'll pay if i have too to get the car fixed as that's far lesser the final cost.

Out of interest has anyone had to pay the 10% towards the repair for whatever reason?

Dear all,

Many thanks for all your guidance on this thread. I recently had the same oil consumption issue with my 2010 Audi A4 1.8 tfsi

My car was out of warranty and had done around 130k at the time of the first oil consumption test. It had a full Audi main dealer service history until I bought it and then I used an independent service centre from then on. The independent service centre did not put the oil grade on every invoice so I simply visited them and asked them to write a note on their headed paper that they had used the correct long-life grade oil for all my services. Audi accepted this without any issues and gave me free oil consumption tests, a free engine rebuild (usual pistons, rings and con rods) and a loan car during the work. The car now drives like new and the oil level has not dropped in over 4k. I also asked them to replace the water pump while the engine was out as I had a small leak somewhere and the pump was the most likely cause. I paid for the pump but labour was free and the coolant level hasn't dropped since.

Audi seem to be helping customers more now - they were reluctant when the issue first emerged. I think this problem combined with the VAG group emissions scandal has made them think they if they want customers in the future - they need to fix the oil consumption issues on this problematic engine range. Clearly I feel they should have done a recall for this issue in the first place but we are where we are.

Without the advice I found in this and other forums, I wouldn't have known what to do / how to approach Audi. If you have this issue, my advice would be to book your car in for the consumption test ASAP and create a folder with all your service history, receipts etc. Explain that you'd heard about the case in the USA and that you're a loyal Audi customer etc. If you're missing any proof of the oil grade used in your services - ask the garage for written confirmation and give this to Audi. Audi are not demanding a full Audi dealer history but are seeking proof that the car has been serviced correctly.
Finally, remember to be polite during the process and you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised by the Audi customer service as I was.

My faith in Audi has been restored and I hope they continue to fix this issue for others.

I asked the 2 independent dealers about verifying what oil went in the car when it was serviced and they said it was the right oil but audi customer service said I'd need proof so that's why there saying they won pay 100%. So seems inconsistent to me. Ay the end of the day the car has the problem and has always have just be nice for them to admit it and get the work done free of charge.

Just had a call from Audi to say they're processing the claim and working out if a contribution will be required. He said it's only a goodwill repair!!

What service history do you have?

So I've had the quote for the piston ring repair and it's going to be £6500. Does that seem high to anyone? Looking back on previous replies the average quote seems to be £5500. I'm going to ask to see the breakdown for this. Would the dealership be adding anything else on to this?

You shouldn't be paying anything at all!

Still can't believe Audi are looking for personal contributions towards the piston and ring repair! You should be totally ashamed Audi UK!!
The B8 TFSI engine is inherently floored and making excuses about the oil that's been put into it affects the rings is absurd!!
Good luck to those new reading and continuing to pursue Audi to repair the engines for free!! They should have been all recalled! Anyway I am still very happy with my Nissan GTR

Agreed, it should of been a recall on the cars with the issue. You would think customer satisfaction would be more important than a customer having to pay a contribution towards what ultimately is a manufacturing fault. Then use an excuse if the car has been serviced elsewhere to get out of covering the full cost. Their paying 90% of the cost so why not cover the 10% to keep a customer? It's peanuts to them. My car is due a service after the work is done but no way will I be going to audi and paying over the odds for a service when their taking the engine apart to replace the piston rings.

To my amazement my car passed it's test. Although i'm still not sure how as I checking the MMI throughout. After 200 miles it was showing 0.75. After 500 miles it was down to 0.25 on the in car gauge. Didn't check it anymore after that as i was convinced it had failed. But the dealer passed it. The service manager did come and explained to me how. In my case they don't have to drain the oil from the engine. They do for some engines but not the type in my car. It's an 2011 A4 2.0 TFSI with 43k on the clock. They check the oil level via a computer. The showed it had used oil but was still within Audi's guide lines. I think his explanation was something along the lines that the car gauge only shows the level in the sump not the total oil level in the entire engine. Well that's what i think he meant. Still not sure myself if i have that right. Anyway it passed as far as they are concerned so they can't go can further for now. Audi UK and the dealer have told me if it starts to burn oil then even if it's like 18 mths time or whatever then as long as the correct has been used at servicing time then i'm still covered for a rebuild. The correct oil used is the sole thing that Audi need to know for a claim, confirmed to me by Audi UK. So the service manager told me to just drive it, top it up when the car tells me and just monitor the mileage. Why they don't just recall them all as others on here have said is beyond me.
