morning all.

hope all is well with everyone.

just had my 5 year service completed by Blackburn Audi. really good job as always, had my 8P 3 years and let them service it every year.. really good set of people there!
anyway... i've been advised that my rear discs and pads are 95% worn and need replacing so wanted to know what everyone's thoughts were on replacing?
im keen to try something a step up from factory options provided its worth it? with it being the rears not sure how much work they actually do?
also as mentioned i've had my 8P since Jan 14 and in that time this is the first time i've ever had to do any work on my brakes... is this a little strange? maybe i'm not quite going hard enough on her hahaha

anyways guys, look forward to all responses, i'm a big fan of this site and read up on most threads most days!

big thanks !

Unless you plan some serious track days then probably best to leave the rear brakes as OEM as they do very little. When it comes to replacing the fronts then you could consider uprating the pads and fluid as a first step.

thanks mate..
don't suppose you know the differences between the choices on Euro car parts? i've entered my reg details and filtered rear discs / pads and there seems to be multiple choices with just a different product code?
cheers :)

I have an OEM set of Pagid rear discs and pads cheap available - brand new never fitted. PM me for info if you are interested in a bargain

Don't be fooled into thinking that some of the cheaper alternatives offered by the likes of GSF and Eurocarparts are ok - stick to pagid or brembo for the discs and pads.

Are you planning to replace them yourself as you need a caliper wind back tool for VAG cars.

thanks for that mate. no i have no intentions of doing work myself. just that Audi wanting £360 to do the work so thought it would be worthwhile sourcing parts myself and using a trusted independent or using my local revo dealer who's done a fair bit of work previously. like the idea of using Brembo but being told regularly that rears arent as important. fully intend on putting something a lot better on the fronts when needed going forward.
thanks for the advise though mate!

Don't touch the rears. Leave as OEM set up. The fronts really depend on what you want out of the car.
Do you track race? Yes > could look to upgrade but do your homework and choose wisely. I didn't on my Subaru and wasted £1300 with issues afterwards that just did my head in. I should have gotten the £1600 AP's I wanted instead of listening to bad advice.
No track > no need to upgrade the brakes then, upgrade the pads and try that.

Fast road driving? Yes > would still be surprised if you needed upgraded brakes, pads again could help and imho, driving skills will outweigh the brakes. E.g. standard brakes and a good driver will always win out over a poor driver and upgraded brakes. The brakes won't save you if you lose control of the car. Paying for driving lessons on a track that improve your skills will enable faster driving with control as well. Ergo, more speed anyway. Just look at the Police. Extremely well trained, the cars are not messed about with, they are standard.
No fast road > Could upgrade the pads but why bother? More money.

I have been down this road and got stung. I don't see the need for any upgraded brakes unless you track your car regularly.
Upgraded pads can help though. Again, choose wisely.

great feedback mate and exactly my thoughts on brake set up. don't do track driving in the car, though have karted for many years. keen fast road driver but seldom in a position where i really need some OTT braking power so it does seem that standard set up could be the way to go. out of interest mate, any pads in particular that you'd recommend? also out of the several options for both discs and pads on ECP for example will they all be compatible for a 2011 8p or are certain model numbers specific?

thank again mate

If you are focused on ECP (and why not, they are competitive), you can't go far wrong with Pagid, Textar or ATE. The last two have been used by Porsche and BMW and ECP have the sole import rights for Pagid who are also a European OE supplier. Lots of people talk about so called "performance brakes" in the context of their cars used on normal UK roads. True performance brakes would be no good for road use as they make a lot of noise, only properly work when very hot and eat through discs in no time. If you are 100% driving on normal roads you need a pad/disc that will perform well when cold and in wet conditions as well as a range of other normal conditions. Ideally match the pad & disc from the same manufacturer. As mentioned above you should have some three digit codes in the handbook which represent the size of disc fitted to your car - ECP mention these codes against their listed disc for your car.

No probs :)
As above I would look no further than Pagid pads for road use. I used EBC on my Subaru, however I don't have long enough here to explain what problems that caused me! LOL
Stick with Pagid pads. You could change the brake fluid however I don't really see you boiling the OEM break fluid to need this either.
Just make sure the brake fluid is changed every 2 years maximum and this will be good.
