Hi,

First post and a new owner of an S3 8V (2014 plate). Looking to increase the engine noise slightly, although I am under no illusion it will ever sound like a V8!

My mechanic friend recommended the Carbonio brand but when looking on Awesome GTI it only gave me the option to purchase the APR kit, which at over £500 is quite steep. I did also notice the Forge and R600 intakes as well which were significantly cheaper at just over £350.

I don't mind spending decent money on a car of this performance, just not sure where to start.

Thanks

If you want more noise you ideally need an open cone filter, this will increase the turbo spool sound and the recirculation valve sound - ie you should hear the dump, tssshhhh

VWR offer a Cup Edition induction kit, which is an open system and apparently offers greater induction noise over the R600. It isn't stupid money either and is the likely option I'll be going for.

Is this an 'open' induction system and therefore more prone to letting dirt in the intake, meaning more maintainence?

How come it looks like there isn't much to it compared to the others?

Spot the beginner!

Dirt not as much of an issue as the fact it would be mostly pulling hot air from the engine bay rather than cold air from outside. See how the other intakes are closed and air is basically funnelled directly to them from outside, the open filters have limited/zero funnelling and so draw air from all round it, which under the bonnet is usually pretty hot. You get a better sound from them, but theyre less efficient.

You could always do what I do, just make your own noises whilst driving. That way I drive something new every day, much to the missus distain...:racer::smiley simmons:

They do draw hot air, but the turbo heats the air so much more than this, then the intercooler does its job, I don't doubt the enclosed filters are more efficient, however if you have an efficient intercooler the difference should be negligible.

Here is good video to show the sounds that an open intake will give you.
