2.0 TFSI Known Oil Consumption problem - 2015 ongoing thread (2009-2011 models)

Morning all,

Great thread - some brilliant contributions and excellent results - fingers crossed I can add to the numbers of 'satisfied punters'!

My 2.0 tfsi quattro (208hp) Black Edition remains a delight to own. But at last checking 285 miles per 1lt is clearly an issue. Having read most of this thread, I have contacted Audi CS and the machine is booked in at Leicester Audi for its first oil consumption test - but not for 14 days. Four complete Audi stamps, purchased from approved dealer, plus only 45k on the clock (11 plate) - I am thinking that once it fails their test, they will be obliged to do the necessary FOC.

My issue is that I have been stalking the launch of the new shaped S5 Coupe. I have configured some tasty options and had a handful of quotes, even though these cars are not in UK yet. But I have this strange oily taste in the back of my mouth which is currently putting me off a £50k spend on another Audi - as lovely as they are!

Any thoughts on my current oil problem and whether to take the plunge on a new S5 would be appreciated.

.....if I get some action on my engine, will this help my resale value? any experience?

I feel your pain.
I am running the first of the V6 3.0t engines and it's a dream to drive. I have been told, and I've read that the oil consumption with mine is not a fault with the piston rings, rather the fault lies with the breather set up. All newer version have been sorted.
If you don't by another Audi, which way will you turn. BMW or Mercedes-Benz. I'd rather stick with a Quattro.

..... quick update on my 1.8 tfsi A5, received a phone call from Stockport Audi.... new engine to be fitted on Monday. Happy days!

Recently purchased a 2010 2.0T tfsi unaware of the problems facing me. To cut a long story short Audi have agreed to a stage 2 repair and I've been told by my local Audi dealership they'll likely cover the full cost. Car has 62k on the clock with FSH, burning oil at an incredible rate and hence failed the oil consumption test! Booked in next Tuesday, told it'll be in approx a week and they'll give me a courtesy car.

I'm going to ask about some new tail pipes as they look terrible in current condition. I've also been told to ask about the chain and this oil consumption issue has any affects on it? If so are they likely to change the chain FOC?

Other than the oil issue the car is fantastic to drive, very smooth with lots of power when needed!

I'll keep you updated on progress with Audi

I went to West London Audi on the weekend for a nose and to kill some time. I must admit Audi have totally got it right with their design; far superior than Mercedes or BMW, but I just can't bring myself to buy another one.

The pain and suffering I went through with mine was just too much.

I'm enjoying my E350 AMG Sport Estate and I definitely wouldn't say no to the latest model.

The only Audi I would buy now, irrespective of how unreliable it could possibly be is this. Still and always will absolutely love them!

Oh why did you post them pictures. I've had an embarrassing accident now.
One day, that car will be on my driveway.
Enjoy your Mercedes . Let's hope for your sake, that it doesn't snow too much this winter. ;-)

Hey guys, have just completed my oil consumption test on my A4 1.8tfsi and it failed miserably which I knew it would, audi topped it up and the light came on after 380 miles! So I've been back and they gave me the price if the parts which I said I wouldn't be paying for as it's a know fault. They said they will see what rhey can do with rhe whole good will gesture thing. But if they come back with they want me to pay a contribution whats the next step speak to audi customer service? As I feel they should do the work for free. The car is on 50k and is a 2011 plate. It has had 2 audi service's and 2 done by other places so 50% audi service history. Anyone else had the work done without 100%audi service for free? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hi Mitch, my 10 plate A4 goes into my local Audi dealer next Tuesday after failing the oil consumption test. They rang me the other day to say Audi had agreed to complete the work FOC. So that pistons, pistons rings, con rods etc, well happy!

Car has 60k on the clock with 3 Audi stamps and 2 non Audi.

If they ask you to pay towards it firstly be nice towards the Audi dealership, it's not there decision and you want them on your side. Politely tell them that you'll be taking it further as Audi have acknowledged this as a known is (Settled a class action lawsuit in USA). Personally I'd speak to citizens advice and trading standards asking them to put some pressure on Audi UK. Hopefully it won't come to that mate and they'll agree to cover the full cost. Keep us informed tho

Hi Neil, thanks for the reply that's really helpfully and good to know. I'm hoping they will be good about it so won't go in guns blazing. But will see what they will get back to first. Glad yours is going to be sorted. I do love the car so do want to keep it. Will definitely keep you posted.

Well the cars went in, told me about a week and changing the cam chain and tensioner! Got a nice little A3 Quattro to spin round in as well so overall well happy!

Mine was in Friday morning to have the breather and software update.
Because I know the girl that sorted it out, she managed to get me a brand new A7 black edition while mine was in.
Thecar was fantastic, not so keen on the 3.0 tdi though. Similar power to mine and felt slower. The fuel consumption was not much better either.
On picking mine up, they said it didn't need the new valve, just the ecu update which lowers the oil pressure.
Car feels even faster now. Wonder if they have updated the ecu with the S4 version. That would be nice.
Just need to keep an eye on the oil usage now, because if this doesn't work Audi won't pay for the repairs and it will have to be the brick wall.
Brad.

Why won't Audi cover the cost if it needs a repair? You not have any service history? I'd like to know how Audi can refuse any repairs irrespective of service history or not. This issue was a manufacturing problem and has nothing to with whether you've had the car serviced or not.

If I were you I'd seek advice from citizens advice and or trading standards.

Hope you get it sorted mate

Afternoon,

Just thought I'd update the post on my car and maybe ask for ant thoughts.

The car went into Leicester Audi last Friday. They brought my appointment forward after I called Audi UK direct as the car asked for a lt of oil after 235 miles and then continued to request a further lt - I sought reassurance that I was safe to drive it considering the computer was requesting oil, yet I had put two lt in. On the way to the dealer, some 20 miles later, the car decided it was now over filled!

Having dropped the car off on the Friday at 7am, my stage one took till last Wednesday - apparently they had ordered an incorrect part ? I was unaware that we needed any special parts for an oil check? and then they were 'busy' so it was delayed - even though I had a confirmed appointment on the Tuesday. It smacked to me of Audi putting off a job that was potentially not so profitable?

I still have on hold my configuration for a new shape S5 (£52k's worth!), this sort of treatment is not exactly encouraging me to fork out big money on another Audi - I am hoping for a decent consideration to persuade me!

Over this week / weekend, I have covered 190 miles. The oil still shows as maximum. Considering my car was requesting a lt of oil every 280 - 230 miles, I would have expected the computer to show some usage by now. Could they have overfilled it? My exhaust pipes are totally coked up, so I am convinced the usage is around the piston rings. Has anyone else experienced any sort of fix following part one of the test? Could my computer have been tweaked?

Got my A4 back today after new pistons, con rods etc and so far the oil level has remained full! Can't fault my local Audi dealership, got a puncture bringing car from workshop to dealership and fitted a Bridgestone FOC, despite it having Pirelli (offered to order Pirelli, but meant me taking courtesy car and coming back dealership on Monday, approx 120 mile round trip, yeah just fit a Bridgestone thank you)

Let's see what happens, hopefully that's the issue sorted and I can spend my "oil money" on beer money instead LOL

Well then after a run out today it appears the car is still burning oil! I'm going to watch it closely and if necessary up be contacting Audi again as it seems the only option is a brand new engine.

I'm guessing the Audi dealership didn't check for scorch marks on the cylinders and hence oil is still leaking out (albeit not as fast as previously)

Wow, that's a bummer.
The dealer I used reckon they get a couple of these oil consumption issues in every week, and from what I gather, they don't mess about changing the internals, they just wack in another engine saving time on ramps, labour and ultimately warranty come backs.
After all, it is audi UK footing the bill.
If you haven't already, I would get audi UK on board and get a case manager to fight your corner as advised earlier.
My new engine has not used a drop by the way

I bought an audi 2010 a4 1.8 tfsi, 60k miles, late October, secondhand from a reputable dealer. after 200ish miles the add 1 litre of oil flashed up. I added the litre, thinking maybe when the pre sales service was done, they didn't put enough oil in. around 300 miles later the warning came up again. I contacted the dealer, who asked me to take the car in, they could find no reason, so they contacted audi. audi agreed a consumption test, and set the test up. the car was returned to me, but 400 miles later requested more oil. Audi have had the car back, and have confirmed a failed oil consumption test. they have agreed a free of charge rebuild. I have the car back at the moment, it will go back to audi within the next two week's for the work to be done. both audi and the dealer h bought from have so far been forthcoming in wanting to get this sorted, will keep you posted on how it all goes.

Same as mine

However I now get 2000 miles to a litre and technically this is within tolerance. I have not bothered going back to Audi. Just putting up with it and it does not seem to have got any worse.

Honestly mate, do not put up with it

What would you do then CHEZ. Dealer will not want to know.

I had it fixed (ahem!) at Audi Manchester and serviced of late at Stockport.

I think the dealer will just say do another consumption test and it will pass. I am sure Audi UK will just say within tolerance.

Hi Neil, just got off the phone from audi after 3 weeks from the failed oil test. They want 10% towards the piston ring change which they said would be an estimated £675! I bought the car privately so havnt got the back up of buying from an audi dealership so any ideas where I can go from here? It's got 50%service history and only on 51k.

Hi Mitch, that's not good! My bill from Audi for pistol rings etc was just under 3k. If I were you I'd be speaking to CAB and trading standards as Audi should be fixing this for nothing as they have acknowledged the problem. Think you'll just need to stand your ground know the facts, they'll try to get out of paying the full cost if they can!

Good luck mate, as always keep us updated

So just thought I'd update my car situation. Audi rang today and they want 10% towards the piston ring change estimated £650. The cars an a4 1.8 tfsi 51k. It has 2 audi service stamps and 2 non. The car was bought privately. Basically Where do I go from here audi customer service?

Yes not good really as it's a manufacturing fault from day 1. They really should cover all of the cost as like you said they know about this. So will speak to CAB or TS. Will you have to pay your bill or will they cover that?

Hi Guys, really informative posts on here and been of great hel although I'm shocked I didn't see this massive issue before I bought the car.

I had a quick question if anyone could help - I have an Audi A5 2010 TFSI, c.£30k miles purchased from an independent dealer in the channel islands and I found out after 3 months it had a definite oil consumption problem (we don't do a lot of miles in the channel islands! :)), uses about 1 litre every 350 miles or so.

The Independent dealer has fobbed me off saying I need to prove there is a problem and recommended going to the local Audi dealer which I have done for the oil consumption test. They local audi dealer have told me I need to wait until the oil light comes on before taking it to them to do an oil consumption test - is this normal practice for the test? I would have thought you can leave the car in immediately?

Cheers!

This just sounds weird. They can do the test with or without the warning light. Procedure is the same. R plain the situation and demand a test done. If they refuse try a different audi dealer or demand to speak to a manager

Lots of stop start did it for me. I have had two oil tests. First one i racked all the miles up on the motorway in less than 2 weeks. It passed. 2nd one I gave it to the wife to sit on the M60 all morning and it failed.

What did he pm you mate? Be interested to know what the advise was in case I need it!

That would be telling !

Nothing much other than i shouldn't put up with it an take it back to Audi. TBH I am getting rid in the summer so really cannot be bothered with the aggro. I have the paperwork to say it has been fixed and rebuilt by Audi so should have any issue in moving it on if asked

I normally have to put a litre in every 800-900 miles.
I'm 300 miles in now and it's only just dropped one marker, really worried it's going to pass.

Have spoken to audi customer services and they said because it was serviced somewhere else then it could of had the wrong oil put in unless I can prove it. Another get out story!

As with most of these stories it is worth reminding Audi UK that it is proven that this problem occurs in cars that have been fully maintained by Audi with correct oil and therefore on what basis would it be relevant that incorrect oil "may" have been used. They can't have their cake and eat it. Additionally ask them to provide proof with a full breakdown of the parts and labour costs involved of the repair if they claim that £675 represents 10% of the cost -they do not like to divulge this information. The value of the underlying costs seems to vary hugely depending upon who you speak to and Audi UK state in their directions to the dealership that they must not be seen to profit out of this transaction. Finally you can refer to my case where my car was repaired at full funding despite being unable to verify the oil for non-Audi servicing so why are they applying this rule inconsistently?

Hi Gary, yes it seems very inconsistent as I know some cars have had the repair free of charge without 100% audi service history. I guess there trying to cover labour costs. They did the oil test free of charge and offered a good will gesture which is practically admitting they know there is a problem. I was thinking of ringing the garages that the car was serviced at to see if they could prove what oil went in but I'm doubtfull.

Right guy's n girls... I'm after your thoughts on fuel consumption after the pistons, rings, conrod work etc. I have an 2011 A4 2.0TFSI Quattro Stronic and whilst she's always had a "thirst" she seems even worse after the work has been done! I'm about 1300 miles into the "new" engine and I would say on average I'm about 50-80miles worse off per tank of fuel based on the same journey's as before. Basically 60 quids worth of fuel is returning 250/280 miles and I was regularly getting 300+ before the work was done. :openmouth:

I was beginning to think the car had not been put back together properly after the work but I got in touch with a mate who has an A5 2.0 Stronic same year (no Quattro) and he too has noticed a drop in MPG. I was hoping it was a case of "bedding" the new engine in again but he's driven more than 3k now and hasn't noticed any improvement. :worried:

My question is, does the ECU or computer software get an update based on the new pistons etc? I wondering if VAG are covering their backsides in the wake of the emissions scandal that rocked the Diesels and this is actually what the car should have been reporting since day 1!

I love the car, but the current MPG is really narking me

Yet more inconsistency from Audi! The garage I took it too checked over my service history and contacted the garages for paperwork needed. Really couldn't fault them, free oil test, free courtesy car (A3 quattro) and fully covered the cost of new pistons rings etc.

So did you have less than 100% audi service history then? And there still doing it for free?

I've got full history, but 2 of the stamps aren't with Audi. The dealership where happy everything had been done on time and even contacted the garage of the other stamps to confirm what was done etc.

If I were you I'd contact Audi UK again and state you know of people who've had the work done FOC without a full Audi history. Just stand your ground and tell them you know your rights, the issue has nothing to do with what oil is in the car, it's a manufacturing fault and Audi know it
