Car thefts - key jammers

Go see @DJAlix , enable alarm bleep, & stop using motorway services.
On a related subject, and for obvious reasons I am not going to give any detail, while I was plugged in to a FL A3 the other day I noticed something very very very alarming! I collect my FL Thursday morning and the first modification I will be doing is to install an ODB port kill switch before lunchtime!

Fitting an ODB kill switch is simple enough, could also relocate or blank the port off also.

Too far away for Alarm Beep Coding? I am currently testing a "remote" coding service which I plan to roll out in January :)

Well I'm up to try the beep mod buddy

Get an on / off switch from Maplin (other crappy and over priced retailers are available) cut a wire from the ODB port and install it in the middle so to speak. I plan to extend the wires off to a hidden location.

Cant you just pull fuse 12 (on my A4) to stop the comms to the ECU ?
The remote "lock out" is a known windup on the radio ham sites, you can buy what does this for under £20 from a popular auction site.

Fuse F8 and F35 on the 8V's, which is also used for the Rain and Light sensor, Light switch, Interior Lights, Range Control, Air Quality Sensor, Dimming Mirror and EPB Light. Not a good idea to pull it :(

I'd be interested in as much information you can give on the OBD kill switch service please.

Just great and our wonderful Police want to rely on our dashcams. I like the OBD kill swich, used to wire every vehicle we had in the family with "cut out switches" when I was younger, sounds very simlar. Isn't it wonderful in the 21st century how much electronics have moved on, while some of the rest of us move backwards.

Without going too off-topic, how would this service work please? Drop me a private message if you want :)

I always lock my car and then check it's actually locked when visiting service stations.

Is it only advanced keys that are being reprogrammed through the obd port, the old style keys aren't affected are they?

Beep enable on lock is the easiest way of avoiding the key jammer issue. I just walk away from the car and If I don't here the beep it's either not locked or a door/boot/bonnet is open .

Without going in to too much detail I now have the ability to perform remote adaptation, coding and diagnostics. Person at the far end would connect to my VPN connect their lappy to their car with a basic RJ45 to ODBII cable. I would then have the ability to code options / flash software etc as if I was sitting in the drivers seat :)

Im currently looking into a can based immobiliser that allows a pin code via factory installed buttons. it does not block comms. its completely undetectable via obd2 port. keys can still be cloned. but there is no way to start the car without a pin code.

Peugeot used to do that with the GTi6 etc ;)

lol

Using VCDS as an example, the person doing the coding would need to be with the car in order to make any changes as the security / copy protection / authentication for the application is contained within the cable. I have invested in an application, not VCDS, which uses a different security / copy protection / authentication method which means that I can be sat on the other side of the world and still be able to code a car. The end user just needs a stable connection to my VPN and a £6 to £12 cable from eBay.

Using this BMW ODBII Port as an Example:

J1962f pinout

Buy a switch like this:

 35

Cut the wire to pin 6. extend the wires to a hidden location, connect switch, job done :)

*example used is a BMW connection, which I believe could be the same as VAG but it's early and I could not be ***** to google around too much for the moment.

Nice!! Sounds good... Looking forward to hearing more on it once you're properly up and running with it

Sadly, doesn't prevent this sort of interference, but does require a bit more noise and damage. To be assured of retaining your car what you need is a Rottweiler on the back seat. If course, this brings its own issues...

Will stop the theft part of it though eg no simple OBD port shenanigans!

The Ghost looks like a quality product, no messing about with kill switches and pretty much covers all bases. Even with the keys the only way your car can be taken is by lifting it onto a low loader.

There's nothing like a bit of media hysteria is there!?!. It's theft FROM cars rather than theft OF cars in the BBC story above. Thieves have moved into the 21st century & rather than using a coat hanger or automatic centre punch to force their way in they're jamming the signal to have away your Lionel Ritchie CD's & Sat Nav. Quicker, quieter & less chance of being spotted as something out of the ordinary if you're just opening the door via the handle.

IMHO the biggest robbery at roadside services is the services themselves!.

The article may well be about theft from cars, but jammers can also be used for theft of cars.
