we'd need another minor modding thread :)
A build thread with an aston martin is certainly not going to be 'minor'. Definitely not by Tufftys standards either.

So... an update of sorts at last :)

My suspension has been very annoying of late... front seems very crashy and I genuinely fear for my life every time I go out in the car due to having to swerve potholes, sunken drains and all the other cr*p our lovely UK roads have to throw at us...

I can't enjoy a spirited drive in the car as I am constantly wincing whenever I hit a small bump and on occasion have had a massive 'bang' as the suspension catches the mearest of bumps... this appears to have damaged the spherical bearing in the camber plates too so decided they had to go too...

I had to do something... I have considered replacing the lot with KW v2 coilovers but tbh even with my discount its an expense I'd rather put towards a lens than suspension these days so decided to replace the springs instead and go from there..

Was at the unit today so cracked on with the job... as you can see I was in good company surrounded by S3's ;)

Did consider a new set of Apex 30mm but decided on some H&R 25mm instead and managed to get a set at a really good price new...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_101538.jpg

My previous LCR top rubbers and some new bearings as I wasn't sure how good the ones I was taking out would be...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_102359.jpg

Started on the fronts... don't forget to undo the Xenon level sensor arm from the front arm (if you have this) else you can snap the arm off the sensor...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_104144.jpg

Near side camber plate was toast as suspected...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_111639.jpg

Bearing had been forced up from the constant tw*tting against the bump stops...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_113456.jpg

Built up the struts with the new springs and LCR mounts...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_113156.jpg

The plastic caps for the top of the suspension were split... normally I'd consider replacing them...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_122839.jpg

...but there isn't much duck tape or a cable tie won't fix lol...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_123032.jpg

With the fronts all bolted up it was on to the rears...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_125032.jpg

...again don't forget to undo the Xenon level sensor arm... this is a favorite to break...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_125042.jpg

Normally you would undo the lower damper bolt to allow the arm to drop...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_130622.jpg

...but I have seen a fair few of these strip threads and when I tried to undo the bolt it didn't feel 'happy' so I left it and undid the damper top bolt instead... just need to undo one screw on the inner arch to be able to peel it away to get to the bolt..
20161120-96dpi-20161120_130632.jpg

..it uses a flat washer with 'serrations' on so is tough to undo but its out of the elements up there and more likely to survive than the lower one...

Undid the drop link to the ARB too and got the spring out... it did need spring compressors though...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_131731.jpg

Top rubber locator thingy has seen better days so will need to replace them at some point but it will do for now...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_131746.jpg

Bit of wrestling and the spring was in...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_133201.jpg

...and done... :)
20161120-96dpi-20161120_135949.jpg

Done the other side next...
20161120-96dpi-20161120_143913.jpg

...and all finished... dropped the car off the jacks, reversed her out into the unit entrance to settle the suspension a bit and checked the front alignment... was nearly 1 degree to out so pulled that in a bit enough to not make the car feel too twitchy on the drive home... will let the suspension settle a bit then go for a full alignment

Ride height is a little higher but will see where it settles... not silly high but not tucking the tyres under the arches like before which in all honesty is fine...

In terms of ride and handling... I have not given her a spirited drive as yet as the roads were wet and congested but in terms of how she rides now its like a different car... I have taken her on the route I normally take where I know I generally dart about like something on crack avoiding drains and shizzle and she just seems to ride those without batting an eyelid...

Steering seems lighter so not sure if the camber plates were adding drag but considering the state of the one bearing and the other had more play in it than I expected tbh (considering how little mileage I do and that they were new bearings not long back) I would not be surprised if that was the case.

Will push her a little harder once the geo is sorted and see if there is an improvement there...

The only other noticeable difference is steering is not as 'positive' a feeling when turning in... not sure if this is because the geo is out (incorrect geo can make steering feel dull) or the swap from spherical bearings to a more compliant rubber top mount... not that its bad in anyway as steering is still 'sharp' but not quite got the same feel as before... again I'll leave judgement until I have had the alignment done..

The main thing I wanted to achieve is to get the suspension back to a place where driving the car didn't have me in constant fear of the smallest imperfection in the road... I think that the Apex springs may have sagged a tad and that 30mm or more on B8's might be too much for them... this was another reason to go for a 25mm drop over the 30mm drop...

I am not massively fussed about losing the 0.7 degree of negative camber I had from the plates either as my car is primarily a road car... if I am in a position where that 0.7 degrees would make an actual difference while I am driving on the road considering the power my car has I will most likely deserve to be locked up...

Don't we all :)

Good to see progress on this, hope it gets you back on that slippery slope with the rest of us again :)

I think I am mostly slippery sloped out on the S3 for now... it should be more routine maintenance or fixing broken stuff from here on in I think... still have this gearbox to build though and there is a couple of other things I want to do to refresh the drivetrain but I suspect the next major thing for me would be an engine rebuild on the A2...

The old girl turns 190k very soon but engine seems strong still... deliberately not modified the A2 (not even mapped!) as I don't want to force anything at this time until ready to replace the engine... even then I doubt I will do anything more than a simple map to spruce her up a tad (although I have been considering billet compressors and hybrids etc lol)...

My current slippery slope is my photography so rather waste money on that at this time lol :)

...although I still haven't fully shelved the idea to go R32 turbo ;)

Good update PT :)

I do know what you mean too. much like a hire car, sometimes the most enjoyable thing is driving care free without worry of bumps catching bodywork, or potholes damaging suspension.

For the power you've got, the the way your car is built and set up, you're right. That last bit of camber isn't going to improve your enjoyment more than it detracts from it through caution elsewhere.

Build it so you can use it any enjoy it, whatever route that may take you down :)

I'm also jealous that you did some work on your car, and were able to actually see a result! i feel like I've been plodding away for a while now with zero return

Keep up the good work. I hope to pop over and say hello in the new year :)

How exactly are you "mostly slippery sloped out" again? :p

Little update... having driven the car a little more I can honestly say its a joy to be able to drive our sh*tty roads without swerving like a loon and wincing every time I approach a rough patch...

The car just feels so much better and hasn't appeared to have affected the handling in the brief chance I had to push her a little...

Ride height is definitely higher... rear is a little higher than I would ideally like from an aesthetics point of view but tbh just being able the drive the car without worrying about smashing the suspension about is worth it...

Little pic I took this afternoon while at Bill's showing the ride height..

Might be easier to just get them all together at ADI next year and use them instead of the BBQ... I am sure Adam won't mind :)

On a lighter note... was updating fuelly as I filled the S3 up on Saturday and realised I have done 8844 miles since the the first fill up after the build...

Other than the 'gearchange incident' (which lets face it despite my best efforts the engine held together pretty well...) the old girl hasn't really caused me much trouble... so I won't be throwing mine onto the burning pile just yet..

...although now I have said this I realise I could be setting myself up for a fall lol

Good thing you installed the 4x4 suspension before going up that bumpy track

Would appear I was right lol... I seem to have broken the S3 :D

Not sure what the actual issue is but there is a vibration from the rear and the odd clunk on maneuvering...

Have just parked her up for now as I don't have the time (or inclination) to look at her but I am hoping its just the rear doughnut as tbh it was showing signs some time back and its symptomatic of that but worse case I guess is haldex unit....

Meh... thats why I have a second car lol... I was planning to do a drive train refresh anyway so I guess this may bring those plans forward a little :)

That's HELLA GOOD LOOKING ONE, good job there!
You made me remember why i love this vehicle!
I still remember when i was 5th grade and my dad take me with him when he was getting his first A3 8L 1.8T, nine years later i was happy to own one of the A3 8L 1.8T's..... and year later S3 8L
I'm proud owning one and loving one with all my best for almost a year now.

Masked up the RNS-E ready to start trimming the front panel..
IMAG0598.jpg

IMAG0600.jpg

One thing that vague guides don't mention is the approach to take with this... I went in assuming I just needed to trim the bottom as this is the suggestion but... what I should have done is fitted the top trim (where the cup holder etc is) first and adjusted the cage to allow the gap between the top of the RNS-E and the top trim to be as minimal as possible... I didn't think of this as it would have closed up the gap I was left with...
IMAG0604.jpg

There is enough meat on the bottom of the RNS-E to have done this and kept a tight gap... I also had a slight hiccup on the bottom too :/
IMAG0603.jpg

Not perfect sadly... RNS-E front panels come up for sale occasionally... I might see if I can track one down and have another go...

Next job was to remove the console to be able to swap out the cages...
IMAG0606.jpg

IMAG0607.jpg

IMAG0608.jpg

There is a screw each side here that needs undoing to release the console plus two behind the top trim panel...
IMAG0611.jpg

IMAG0613.jpg

All out... phew!
IMAG0614.jpg

Double DIN vs single DIN cage...
IMAG0615.jpg

Cut the plug of the RCA adaptor as I was going to try and pin the OE plug but as I have Bose there is already wiring from the cars loom for line out going to the Bose amp so I cut the RNS-E adaptor and soldered the RCA lead on...
IMAG0620.jpg

IMAG0625.jpg

Put the console back in and fitted the headunit in... took a lot of juggling to get the unit pushed back enough to fit in... had to rearrange the looms to get it all in but finaly it clicked in...
IMAG0626.jpg

The unit was coded for an A4 so I need to recode it for an A6 and change the startup screen... I also need to do all the other required coding to get it working with the DIS... I didn't need to wire the canbus as my car already has this for the instruments...

Just need to work the correct coding out as I didn't have time and a phone line fault at Bill's unit meant no easy internet access so I will have a look tomorrow at work ;P

Navigation appears to work too... I stuck the GPS sensor just under the dash, it was magnetic so I placed it on the dash cross member

Other than the gaps which I think I can close up a bit I am happy with the outcome so far...

<tuffty/>

I plan on finally installing mine while I'm off work. I've ordered a Audi Bluetooth module as well for phone function but What is the rca lead needed for and if so does matter which wire you put the red and white plugs on or are the the same?

RCA lead was to run my aftermarket amps... wiring needs to be correct for channels to work correctly and correct polarisation of signal

<tuffty/>

As its a nice day today and my lot have ******** off to the inlaws for boxing day lunch I decided I ought to have a look at the car to see if there was anything obviously broken at the back...

Got her up on my ramps and had a quick inspection... doughnut looks worn but not obviously damaged and I couldn't rotate the prop to be able to check all the way round (need to get her up on the 2 poster to check properly) so decided that I will just get a new one anyway as they are a known weak point and mine is looking a little tired..

Pulled the haldex fuse and tried slow lock to lock turns... the winding up/hopping of the rear had now stopped so points to the controller which at last is a start... then took her up the road to make sure the vibration had gone so I could at least be able to drive her to Bills...

This did not go very well... any speed over 15mph and the back felt like it was shaking to bits... disappointing...

So... at some point in the new year (and maybe before the end of it) I will just do a full drive train refurb... I had planned to do this but I didn't expect not to have the car immobile while I did it...

Ah well :)
