Hi guys! Looking to buy an a4 soon and just want some opinions. I need a diesel so that's one thing I'm set on. Which engine would people say is the more preferable? The 1.9 pd130 or the 2.5 tdi? Kind of want some guidance on what people think is the more tunable, reliable, economic and ease of working on. Looking for pros and cons on each.
Any help is appreciated!

Go for the 1.9 ... 2.5 engines are very unreliable

Cheers guys. What's the faults with the 2.5? Also with the 1.9, whats the main things to start with performance wise? I've been used to a diesel mg where there's been a few bench mark things to start with performance, wondering if it's the same for these.

2.5 engine is the worse engine Audi have ever made

Utter rubbish.

4 years with my BDH 2.5 tdi quattro now on 154k and besides a few age related niggles it's been great.

Find a car with good service history that's been looked after and enjoy.

Buy a cheap shed with no history and good luck, 1.9 or 2.5! Or any of the petrol variants too!

Having had both 1.9 annd 2.5 in Quattro form I think it is obvious that they are very different and I wouldnt recommend the 2.5 unless you can cope with the bigger bills in return for a classier engine. The 1.9 makes more sense as they get older cos its ordinary and easy maintenance and there are lots more to choose from

Quattro Quattro Quattro Quattro, that's the important bit! As regards 2.5 v6, fuel pump can give up and they can also have chocolate camshafts if they haven't been looked after, a big lazy lump suited for towing but is also tuneable, steps aside for Adamss24 :respekt:

Ok thanks. Does being a Quattro sap some of the power?

Ok cheers guys. What's the main things to look out for when buying one of these? I'm also looking for one with a few extra gadgets like reverse sensors and a Bose system. Did these come factory in most models? Remember having one in my old a3 and sounded so good.

Bose was already in my Sport...great sound. Changed Gearbox oil shortly after getting mine, can be a bit troublesome reading from the guys on here but no problems at all so far (touch wood). Very tuneable 1.9s & handling great.

I have had my 2.5tdi front wheel drive for 5years and it has been superb and I would not change it for the world, but eveyrone has their own opinion going on their own experience so at the end of the day you pay the money and take your choice, you could buy a junker or you could buy a good one, lets hope it is the latter.

Never owned a 2.5, but have had 4 x 1.9's which in my opinion are great.. know a mate who has a 2.5 Allroad auto and it's lucky to do 27mpg.. 1.9's go on forever if serviced properly.. also de-cat and re-map makes then great motors..

yes I suppose it goes by experience, I have many threads about bad 1.9tdi,s and if someone has had a bad car then their thought on them would not be good and the same goes for the 2.5tdi, I have a good 2.5tdiin fact the wife and I travelled from Mersyside to Aberdeen to collect my car on purchase five years ago and cannot complain good on fuel kind on tyres and I do my own general maintainance.
