Thinking of growing up a bit and getting an S5

I saw the new S5 coupe driving about in the grounds of the Ingolstadt factory, I was stuck on the bus mid tour as it went past, but it looks great.
also -there wasnt many exclusive coloured carts to get piccies of, Im guessing they're all up at the Neckarsulm plant..

Guess my post was less an argument about why the S3 is a better option, and more about why I dislike the B9 compared to the B8.5.

The S3 has all of those negatives (bar the S-Tronic), but is, as you say, much kinder on the wallet in terms of price and running costs (marginally...).

Point about haldex and suspension is a bit moot as I understood that quattro does nothing for handling (i.e. it improves traction, not grip.). Videos racing the RS5 vs. the M4 shows how the RS still understeers like a pig... In any case, I don't think any Audi performs well in handling, and would only get one in the knowledge that it is straight line performance that it excels at. To that end, improved traction from a permanent quattro is important....

Haldex absolutely hinders the way the car handles as it adds to the car losing grip in corners.
Putting that much power predominantly through the front wheels without a good differential set up is the problem that leads to understeer; couple that with damping issues which often make the car a touch bouncy; it can be a bad combination.
This is an argument that's been done to death on here, but I'd rather FWD will good diff and damping, as that's what handles the curvy bits at the end of the straight bits with more precision, feel and enjoyment than a Haldex effort.

This is why I can handle Haldex in the new S5, it's not a car you really want to throw around. As it is our family car, it does a great job, and the new one will do it better I'm sure.

I agree that no Audi handles particularly well, however the best I've driven is the RS6. Gripped like it was trying to rip the tarmac off the road. I ended up buying the RS5, which wasn't as good as the RS6 to drive, but looked better and was cheaper.

Ah OK. Nah I agree I don't really chuck mine about, which is why I didn't bother specing the sport diff, but I still like the traction from a permanent quattro.

To be fair, I can't really say either way till I have driven it extensively....

I have a FWD cupra 280 DSG at the minute, and it is a great handling car round the corners. That said, only in the dry. In the wet it does struggle, and from a dig it struggles with traction, but that said on a dry day round the corners it's awesome. I can't comment In Wet corners and I value my life so I don't really want to try, and I don't want to track it. Think it's 17 seconds faster round the Nurburgring compared to the golf R, and they are essentially the same car. Actually the cupra is 20bhp down and it's still sizeably quicker. It's a dream in the corners and that's been proven :)

Pretty sure the mechanical diff on the front helps a lot.

Could say the same about the S3 vs RS3, or indeed any S vs RS?

And to be fair, if you are into modding, the 3.0TFSI V6 has the potential to massively out perform the RS5, for pretty small costs. I don't think the supercharger for the RS5 was ever fully developed, unlike the supercharger for the 4.2 V8 S5. But that is very silly money in comparison to a remap and pulley upgrade.

But I agree. I would have an RS5 over my S5 any day of the week...!

I'm not into modding at all. I like my warranty in tact, and that means not voiding it by modding it at all, from when I buy it brand new.

As for S3 vs RS3. Again, you are talking about 10K, or more price difference, however the 0-60 variance is 0.5 of a second, and the power delivery is minimal. Same comparing the S3 and the S5.

I am merely talking about power to price ratio of course, which is one of my most serious criterion when buying a new car.

Yea the performance difference between the S3 and S5 is negligible. With the omission of the stuff I love about the B8.5 S5, it does make the price harder to justify.

Of course I haven't had an extended drive of the S3 to know how it differs for everyday driving. One thing about the bigger Coupe is that it is incredibly quiet and comfortable on motorways. Perhaps the hatchback is less...refined? Honestly don't know!

New B9 S5, in any shape, is missing the following -
No supercharger, now a turbo
No s-tronic gearbox, now tiptronic
No crown wheel permanent quattro, now haldex 'ultra'
No sepang blue unless you want to pay £2k +

But I'm sure it will be a 'better' car ... :D

You can still get the permanent one by specing the sports diff.

I'm the opposite to you. I haven't had an extended drive of the S5 to know, but I find it fairly comfortable and quiet in the S3, other than the ****** rattles I've had with MMI and other things!!

I would like to see the difference in stock suspension in the S5 over the S3 though, as that is one of my major gripes with the car. It is just far too bouncy on B roads and the like.

Hmmm yea it's probably not that surprising but the S3 felt a lot bumpier and noises compared to my S5.

It certainly didn't feel slow, but the power delivery is very different. Again, hardly surprising but the S5 is much smoother and linear in comparison.

It's a great car and one I'll be happy to own, but chopping the S5 in for one is a different story. I managed to get a very good deal, but the money for my S5 wasn't great and considering I'm going to do hardly any miles in the next year, I'm going to wait till my 24months deal ends next year and hopefully I'll get a bit more equity in the car then. Of course with the new S5 it could get worse..

Also looking at other in stock cars as well as some other models.

The S5 is a hard car to beat it seems....!

The lines they put on the hood of the 2018 A5 was so unnecessary. The weird shape of those headlights and their DRL also look horrible. They should stuck with the same direction of the previous A5 and just copy the A4 front.

All the old A5 needed was to have it's wing mirrors mounted on the door and get an A3 or A6 interior and there would be no reason to look at the A7.

Audi mucking with the front fascia of the new A5 keeps it from looking better than the A7.

Take a look at the wing mirror on that Tesla,

Why couldn't Audi do that to their production cars? Why does every A'x' car with the exception of the A7 have a black plastic base for the wing mirror followed by the color of the car?

Yet look at the base of the wing mirrors on 2011 Concept A3 sedan or the 2016 Concept VW Comfort Coupe Sport that have the aluminum trim of the window go with the wing mirrors which I think looks much better.

Maybe that's why tesla are a baw hair from going bust, as for Audi's wing mirrors it's all down to using similar parts throughout the range, l do like Audi's wing mirror design, if it's good enough for the R8 it's good enough for a A3

It's not just Tesla, BMW did it with their latest 7-series sedan. Aluminum looks better than the cheap black plastic.

I'm amazed the only Audi, they didn't screw this up on is the A7.

Don't buy a Audi then, the BMW has painted colour coded door mirrors and lower part is painted plastic in faux aluminium look, l am sure they use the same door mirrors elsewhere but are black at the bottom.....
