where would be the best place to get a remap done around the Mansfield area please?

Shark Performance definitely. Had my B7 remapped by them and can recommend.

Do you have to tell your insurance that you have remapped? Will it be increased?

What about fuel consumption?

Ask your insurers. When I had a car done some time back it was about 10% extra on the premium.

I just got a tuning box from DtUK. It arrived this morning, fitted in 5 mins and the car drives like a dream. It may be an easy option for you.

I managed to rag the car around so much, enjoying the extra performance of the DTUK box that I filled the DPF in less than 1 tank!! So don't get too carried away cos it's not remapped your car, it's just tricked the fuel pressure sensor, to increase the pressure, so it squirts in more fuel.
The map for fuel timing and duration is unchanged. Whereas a remap changes the actual fuel mapping.

Well that's a bit of a buzz kill. I thought these boxes were a bit more than the cheap resistor boxes from eBay? What version of the box did you have mate?

To be fair it was in 2008, so things may have moved on since then, but at the end of the day the boxes work by tricking the ECU, not by fine tuning it.

But there is 3 maps programmed into the box. All with rolling road results which if the car was just getting over fuelled it wouldn't show genuine increase in bhp and torque? Also the 3 maps deliver the extra power differently with different power curves, would an over fuelling box be able to do this?
I'm not that clued up on this so any advice would be great.

Interesting discussion on that link and confirms what I've been thinking about tuning boxes. I can't see how fooling the ecu to add more fuel and more boost as these boxes do can give a finely tuned map. it's certainly a crude way of tuning, it must work ok as there are many happy customers. I for one will be having my 3.0tdi remapped and I have narrowed it down to either ADS in Preston who does revo or I'll be going to unicorn who come highly recommend here.

Hi,
If you find you have any issues with insurance at all for a re-map then please feel free to drop me a line.
Regards,
Dan.

Adrian flux was good with me rang them up and asked how much I would cost if I got my b8 3.0 tdi mapped. My premium is about £405 with all my mods. The remap increases it by about £43 so I thought while I was at it I'd put a bigger front mount intercooler on. Asked them about that and was told there was no extra charge for that just the map
