Just after some ideas,
Before my summer holiday away I changed the anti-roll bar drop links on my 54 plate a4 avant.
It was then lovely and knock free for once.

On holiday a few months later I arrived at our destination to be greeted with a loud knock/bang from the passenger side front when parking. (great)
I had a quick look underneath & nothing seemed amiss.

For that week the car seemed to knock just when going over speed bumps slowly & seemingly at random when driving along smooth roads??... the middle weekend of my hols it rained & the knock went away.. not to be heard again until this morning!

Driving to work, am now getting this knocking noise when driving along at what seems like random intervals.
It doesn't seem to make the noise over bumpy roads which is what i'm finding odd.

Any ideas what can cause knocks when just driving along??? i'm wondering if it's just when travelling slowly but that could be as you can't hear it so much when driving faster.

There's always something isn't there!!

Cheers Guys

Assuming your coil spring has sheared, my money is on upper control arms. If you go to an area with speed bumps, then it's guaranteed to clunk. Assuming your pinch bolt isn't seized, its relatively straight forward to replace. Get a pry bar on it and check for movement. The other option is to release the pinch bolt from the strut to get access to the arms and feel for play. Will be sloppy with no resistance. Replace pinch bolt and use a marine grease to lube.

I'd replace with Meyle HD (guaranteed for 4 years) or fit OE such as Lemforder. Could also be lower arms, which is a bit more involved.

Also check ARB rubber bushes. They can fail, so start from least expensive option and go from there.

well, had it up on a ramp today & it's been found that the front lower rear arms both need replacing, the rubber bush (engine end) isn't attached to the metal so slips around a lot.
Not sure if that's the noise, but certainly needs changing.

Typical though, It knocked all the way to the garage, my mate drove it & it didn't make the noise!!... then it knocked all the way home.

So I'll be getting the 2 front lower rear arms changed & also will change the front lower front arm on one side as I've previously changed the other side.

Now, what brand?... I've used TRW for the front lower front before & have lemforder drop links... to go for the matching trw lower front & lemforder for the 2 rears i'm looking at £230ish from ECP.

I can get Febi parts for £45 each, are they 'bad'? I've used them on my golf in the past, but not heard much about people using them on the b6?
Also, first line brand? any opinions on them.

I want decent parts, and will spend out if it's worth it, but equally don't want to waste my money, if febi is also decent.

well... frustrating, oddly with the damp weather returning the knocking seemed to clear up.
I'd bought the front lower rear (left & right) control arms, and seeing that they were shot, Had them replaced.

But.. the knocking has returned again so it wasn't that.

****** annoying that these cars have so many control arms/rubber/ball joint bits on the front end, I guess my only option really is to replace the top 4 arms too & pray that is it!!.. (got a 2002 mk4 golf with 155k miles on it & a rock solid bumpy ride mini cooper s with (errgghh) run flats that are both quieter than my once smooth comfy A4 that I loved!)

Fed up of the knocking though, it doesn't knock when going over speed bumps, or even really bumpy roads, it just does it randomly(ish) on the slightly bumpy surfaces.. not that it really makes much sense, but that's what it seems.

I've been buying lemforder/trw parts so it's not a cheap 'try it and see' situation as I'm sure you all know.

On top of that had the alternator clutch pulley go the other day too (which incidentally was changed about 3 years ago, by previous owner so hasn't lasted well)

Any ideas on tests that can be done to check other bits? wondering if it could be any mounts etc.. can't really just keep replacing parts in the hope it'll fix it. But I guess it's a 2004 car with 144k miles on it so maybe it's all shot!
