Start stop and battery

hi all, I've had a 2009 a5 cabriolet 2.0t petrol for about 4 months now. It has never start-stopped, nor does there appear to be any button to activate/deactivate any start-stop system?

When I turn ignition off, I get a message:"weak battery. Turn off or system will shut down after 3 minutes". I haven't called its bluff yet......
Rang an Audi specialist today about getting a new battery fitted, as I assume it's not just a case of taking old battery out and fitting a new one. I was advised that as I have a start-stop car, I'd be looking at ~£300 for a new genuine Audi battery.

Question is, how do I know if I've got a start stop car? I thought all 2.0t cabs were start stop, but I can't see any evidence of it?! Don't want to pay ~£300 for a special start stop spec battery if it's not even a start-stop car!

The earliest brochure I have for the cab is 2013 and it states that start/stop is standard for all variants. But I have a 2010 brochure for the sportback and it states that stop/start is only available for 2 litre engines with manual gearbox. I found 2 images of the disable button via Google images (they may not be from the A5 but they show you what to look for):

Thanks Dippy. I managed to get a 2009 pdf of the a5 brochure, and its states that all models have automatic start-stop. I can't see any button that looks like that though :-(
 
Maybe it couldn't be disabled in the earlier version. Do you have user manual you can check?
 
Check the battery to see if it's an AGM type. The start / stop cars use AGM batteries which are a different type of construction to a typical car battery. They are more expensive than standard car batteries. Not sure where the battery is in a cab. It will be in the boot somewhere either under the boot floor or placed to one side. This picture shows an AGM battery. They are clearly marked.

See if you can get the part number off the battery whilst you are looking at it. It will contain 915105

The OE battery installed can also be worked out from the PR codes on the car build sticker.

On my A4 there is a copy of the PR codes in the front page of the service schedule.
If you look at the part number listing I linked above you can see model data information against different batteries The last 3 digits like the one below J0B is the PR code related to the battery fitted in the car.

You should be able to match one of these codes with the vechicle build sticker.
The batteries are coded to the car. It's not necessary to use a genuine battery a Varta silver dynamic in the correct size/ type will probably be half the price of an OE battery. The coding tells the battery control module what size battery is fitted to the car.
The action of coding in a new battery supposedly resets the battery control module so that it's aware a new battery is fitted.
Many people just disconnect the old battery , connnect the new one and as long as it's the same capacity/ type you shouldn't have any issues.
The battery control module will soon work out that a new battery has been fitted as the terminal battery voltage will be a lot higher.

Dippy, not sure, maybe that's it, it can't be disabled? I checked user manual this morning and couldn't find any reference to start-stop. But I have the gear change guidance thing, which I thought was part of yen start stop system?
Desertstorm, thanks for the comprehensive reply. I rang an Audi specialist about replacing the battery, who said similar to what you say. That I would need an agm grade battery as my car is listed as being a start stop car, and that I should have a button to disable the start stop (which is when it started to get confusing!). He said it is best to do a battery drain test first, and then including an OE spec agm battery, fitted and coded, it would be £190. Which I didn't think was too bad? I just didn't see the point in paying for an agm battery if it's not a start stop car, which I still can't work out conclusively. I'll check out the codes per your instructions; I have a sticker in the front of my service book which has all the codes listed, I just didn't realise the battery code was On there too. Thanks again for the help
 
I have gear change guidance on my A4, It doesn't have stop-start. Find the battery and look at the top. AGM batteries are clearly marked.

Hi Desert storm, I had a look at the battery and it does not obviously state AGM on the top. Took a photo of the serial numbers etc, looked online for the part and that suggests its not an AGM battery either? Beginning to think my car is not start-stop, and I don't need an AGM battery!?
 
Hi desert storm, yes my PR code is J0Z for battery, I just still wasn't 100% sure it wasn't AGM cos the PR decoder just said something like 520a (or something like that). Looks like I might not need an expensive battery then.....I trusted the mechanic I asked, I suspect once he realised it wasn't actually an AGM needed he would have told me, but I'll let him know in advance and see what he says. I "think" you still need the "special" batteries even without start/stop. I certainly did on my 09 Coupe.
 
If your car has an AGM battery it will be clearly marked on the battery.

The battery above is the 105Ah AGM battery that may be fitted in a lot of A4/A5 cars.
The Varta equivalent for this is an H15 .

A 110ah "normal" battery is less than £100, A 105AH AGM is £180 .I hate to think how much an OE AGM battery is.
People may be tempted to replace AGM batteries with non AGM batteries and I am sure in years to come as cars get older and worth less people will not want to pay the money for an AGM battery and fit a normal battery.
The car will work but the lifespan of the battery will be very much reduced especially if you are using the stop/start.
